Tools and Hardware Reviews of Haier HWR10XC6 10,000-BTU Window Air Conditioner with Remote ControlCustomer Review: Keeps place cool, but not cold, and pretty noisy Summary: 4 Stars
Disclaimer:
I'm a 20-something guy who had previously never installed or even operated a window air conditioner. I had absolutely no idea how much work would be involved installing this, how heavy it would be, how noisy it would be, or how effective it would be. All I knew was I can't sleep in anything over 75 or so degrees and with the humid NYC summer creeping up on me I needed an affordable cooling solution. I can only judge this unit based on how it met my needs; I have no idea how it compares to a typical A/C unit.
Unit was very easy for me to install. I have heavy windows and a study ledge, so all I had to do was screw on the plastic accordion-looking side panels, prop the unit precariously on the bottom of the window, then close the window on top of the unit. I was definitely terrified I would drop the unit and see $160 of cooling power plummet 3 stories; possibly slaughtering a passerby; but once I had the heavy (and stiff-moving) window closed on top of the unit, it did not feel like it was going anywhere. Luckily (or maybe this is part of the unit's design) once I had it securely propped out the window, it was at an angle for water drainage without me needing to do any finagling. I then extended the panels, snapped them into their new position, then duct-taped and caulked the hell out of the whole thing to prevent air from escaping. Overall, the fear of dropping the sucker out the window was stressful, but otherwise installation was a cakewalk.
Once installed, I pressed buttons without reading instructions and had refreshing icy air coming out of the unit within a minute. After reading instructions, I learned you effectively have 3 settings you can adjust: SPEED (how fast and noisy the fan spins), TEMP (ideal temperature you want room to get cooled to), and FUNCTION (whether you want just a spinning fan, just a condenser, both all the time, or energy saving combo of a little of both).
SPEED is simple, but all 3 speeds: low, med, high are noisy. I generally start at high to get the room cool fast, then drop to med or low to reduce noise after room is cooled.
TEMP I don't understand. No matter how high or low I set the TEMP setting, it never seems to adjust the fan speed or condenser to keep the room at that temperature. I've set the TEMP setting to 70 and unit will run and run and run till the temperature in the room drops to as low as the 60's. This setting so far as proven pointless unless used in conjunction with the energy saver function setting.
FUNCTION is cool in principle, but lately it's been so hot I only use one setting. The "fan" setting makes the unit just a big window box fan, the "humidifier" just runs the condenser, and the "cool" setting runs both. The 4th setting, "energy saver", has proven to be a waste on hot days. According to the box, "energy saver" makes the fan shut off 3 minutes after the condenser does... and the condenser is supposed to shut off once the unit gets the room to the desired temperature. However, as far as I've seen with this setting: the unit gets the room cold, the condenser shuts off, the fan shuts off, then room gets hot within 20 minutes or so and the unit never turns back on. This setting maybe works better when it's not terribly hot out; but in 90+ degree weather, a shut-off unit makes for a hot room very quickly.
As a result, I generally turn on unit at full speed with cool setting and just pick a random temp setting. It gets room cool, it never shuts off, it's noisy, but it keeps entire studio apt cool to cold.
I do genuinely appreciate the timer setting, which allows me to set the unit to turn on (or off) up to 24 hours later. It's pretty magical to leave for work and come home to a cool apt thanks to this setting.
The remote idea is cool, but in reality the apt is small enough that the remote is used less often than you might think. It's still nice to have though.
Overall, I'd say it serves it's purpose of cooling the room quickly - and keeping the room cool thereafter - well. However, for the price, I was hoping: 1) it would be a bit "smarter" as far as regulating the speed and power of the condenser and fan go... thus far they both stay on indefinitely till I turn the unit off, and 2) it could be a bit colder. The lowest I've gotten the room is probably 35 degrees below outside temperature. While this is perfect for sitting around the house, during the night I'd like to be able to get temp down below 70 for sleeping, and this has been hit or miss on 90+ degree nights. These may be typical limitations of AC window units, so I'm still giving it 4 stars and would recommend to others.
