Tools and Hardware Reviews of Havahart 5265 Spray Away Motion Detector Sprinkler Animal RepellentCustomer Review: Works - Expensive, but worth it Summary: 5 Stars
I laid sod down in my yard this summer only to wake up mornings and find peices of it lifted up and strewn across the yard. I was mystified but soon found out that we have roving raccoons in the neighborhood.
I tried staying up nights in hopes of catching them and scaring them off, but the raccoons are smarter than me and can concentrate their mischief elsewhere until I go to sleep and them return with a vengeance. Having met them in my yard they are unafraid of people because there is no way I am as fast as they are, and I really don't want to hurt them, or to get bit by them either. The raccoons will climb the fence just out of the range of the hose until you are gone and then come right back.
The answer was the Havahart Spray Away. This thing was expensive, but after several sleepless weeks and a lawn that wouldn't take root, I plunked down the cash and bought one.
No more lawn problems, I have not even seen a raccoon lately. I hear the thing going off occassionally, and it scared the neighbors, and sprays me at times ... but it is a nice, automated, fast and permanent solution to my raccoon problem. My only other solution would have been to buy a high powered pellet-gun.
I am sold on this product, in fact I had to get two since they started to come around the back yard after the got scared of the front yard.
The big question to me was whether this thing would work or be a big disappointing waste of money - but it definitely works. I have to thank the makers because staying up all night like a maniac in hopes of scaring a racoon off personally once or twice will drive you crazy with lack of sleep!
Customer Review: Garden Protection Summary: 5 Stars
The Havahart model 5265 motion sprinkler is fantastic for deer and critter control. It has acted as an alert sentinel and protected my roses and small vegetable garden for over two years now.I was so impressed with it's effectiveness I purchased an additional sprinkler a month ago. Sadly, it was a defective sprinkler that would not shut off, but Amazon was prompt to replace the sprinkler and pay the return shipping. Havahart and Amazon, they are a great team. Things happen so I am not marking the sprinkler down in my review.
The Havahart design is so much more visually appealing than the threatening Scarecrow manufactured by Contech. Surely they perform about the same, but for looks, I prefer the Havahart appearance. Even the company name is appealing and sounds very critter friendly, scare them away but don't hurt them, a good philosophy.
I am one of Havahart's best customer salespeople, I am forever telling the story of how the motion sprinkler saved my precious vegetable garden and strawberries from the marauding deer. Granted there are a few very smart deer out there that get a few strawberry plants, but the motion sprinkler scares most of the deer away, I have seen it in action out my office window. The feedback is gratifying and supports my decision on my purchase.
I only have one complaint, the motion sprinkler does not distinguish between humans and critters, many times I have been squirted fully in the face and back while tending to my garden.
All in all, I highly recommend the Havahart motion sprinkler, it is well worth the money.
Customer Review: Works great! Summary: 4 Stars
After reading some of these reviews, I was uncertain if I would be happy with this product, but my deer/dog problem was ruining my yard. I ordered 2.
These are plastic units, which is why I give them 4 stars. The hose connections should be brass, in my opinion. Hence, all the leaking complaints on the reviews for these sprayers. Fortunately, I was able to circumvent these leaks by changing out the provided rubber hose washers, using Teflon putty on all of the threads and by attaching a "quick release" type of attachment (from Lowes) to the hose attachment threads - this way I won't strip the plastic threads on the sprayer whenever I switch hoses for the sprayer. Just an easy click and the sprayer is in a new location. Now the unit has no leaks at all, inspite of being connected to the hose all day and night.
The motion detector works fine (note: it does have a "delay" between firings to prevent continued firings, so expect this). The sprayer portion is just like a lawn waterer, which can be adjusted in terms of range of fire and in terms of the width of the spray pattern.
This year my day lillies were not devoured by the deer and the neighborhood dogs have had to change their daily bathroom patterns.
Customer Review: Not nearly as good as the Contech brand Summary: 2 Stars
I have three motion detecting sprinklers, two made by Contech (ScareCrow) and one by Havahart. Both of them are excellent for repelling deer (two years of experience with high deer pressure) but the Contech ScareCrow is more dependable. Although the Scarecrow sprinkler is more expensive, it is worth the price. The Havahart does not come with a guarantee other than a 30 day return policy whereas the Contech ScareCrow sprinkler has a two year warranty and they stand behind it. I had one fail after 22 months of use and they replaced it promptly. Also the motion detecting range, sensitivity, and adjustment is more stable and dependable in the Contech ScareCrow. The only time I've not had the ScareCrow work was during a period of very high humidity during some rainy weather when it failed to go off during a period of less than a day. On the other hand the Havahart motion sprinker is much more erratic in its performance and sometimes fails to work for brief periods.
Customer Review: Spray A gay Lotion-Activated Water Repellent Summary: 2 Stars
Now when I think of a scarecrow, I have the image of a hooded man in blue jeans with a dirty shirt with old underpants tied to his head. Not this stupid thing. It's a piece of metal arm that doesn't look like it could frighten a tin man. So right out of the box I wasn't too impressed.
I also put Coyote urine in the liquid container instead of water since water doesn't scare thirsty animals away. It's supposed to "spray off" anything nearby but it only hit me when I went to check it. I stunk like Coyote urine for about 2 months since Coyote urine doesn't come off unless you douse yourself in cans of tomato juice.
After a few months of use, I found my garden pillaged by rodents, beetles, prarie hogs, birds, buzzards, rabbits, mice, lizards and pestilent frogs. Take my advice, build yourself a chicken farm instead.
