Customer Review: Great idea but poor quality control

This is a terrific product when it arrives in working condition. I had to buy 5 in order to find 3 that worked. The two non-working units each exhibited the same symptom. They would turn on for about 1 second and then immediately turn off. The problem was in each case isolated to the receiver located in the wall switch. The dimmer control functioned properly in each case.
Maybe I am unlucky but a 40 percent failure rate is not acceptable. Heath-Zenith technical support was neither very technical nor helpful. They suggested that these units don't work in all locations and maybe I lived in an area with interference. The second unit that happily happened to work proved this assumption was incorrect. Let's hope that Heath-Zenith gets its act together and actually performs some quality control testing. I don't enjoy performing these tests for them.
Installation is rather simple and takes about 15 minutes. Once working, this is a wonderful device and I have been unable to find a replacement from another manufacturer. These units perform well without a lot of false triggering. The transmitter {motion sensor unit} may be mounted well away from the light so that large moths, attracted by the light, will not trigger the motion sensor. The range adjustment {sensitivity} is quite adequate.
The wall switch is substantially larger than a typical light switch. This requires the installer to make sure that the supplied wire nuts are pushed well back into the electrical box before installing the 2 screws that hold the switch into the electrical box. Carefully handle the antenna so that it doesn't get crushed during the installation process. Be careful not to damage the grounding wire during the installation process. This wire comes from the side of the module so route it carefully so that it is not crushed when installing the screws.
The first working unit has now been working for a month and performs extremely well. Amazon has always provided excellent customer support. I can't say the same for all of their vendors. I try to buy only items sold by Amazon. These usually come with free shipping and ALWAYS with excellent customer support. Thank you, Amazon!
Update: November 13, 2010.
My 3 working units remain working for almost 11 months. The batteries for the motion sensor located in high traffic areas needed to be replaced after 5 months of operation. Keep in mind when the motion sensor is exposed to the weather that the seal is not all that good. I found that the battery terminals were corroded after 5 months. I cleaned the contacts, replaced the batteries and then sealed around the existing gasket area with a thin line silicon sealant. This has worked well over the past 5 months. Still, even with the problems, I am pleased to have these sensors but the product doesn't merit 5 stars.
