Tools and Hardware Reviews of Heath Zenith BL-6133-LA Basic Solutions Wireless Switch and Wall Switch, Light AlmondCustomer Review: The Cheap Way out of The Cheap Way out Summary: 4 Stars
I bought this switch to address a problem created by a contractor who worked on my attic space. Instead of adding three way wiring when the innards of the walls were accessable, he simply added a light switch in series to the existing wiring. This only works if I remember to turn the lights on when going down the stairs; not to mention someone else trying to come up the stairs, noticing the light won't go on and forgetting to return the switch to it's original place and thus I have to walk down the stairs to reset things.
Enter the wireless light switch. The switch installed easily. Since there was no lug to attach a grounding wire to, I installed the switch at the bottom of my stairs where their was a grounded metal electrical box. I then removed the switch from the top of the stairs and spliced the wires together. Here's were I got a bonus. after securly splicing, taping and stuffing the wires into the box, I found that the mounting holes on the remote switch line up with the holes on the electrical box. This works out great since according to code, I can't hide a splice behind drywall and I can avoid using a blank cover plate.
The switch itself functions well. Ocassionally there will be a slight delay in it's action when the remote end is used or a failure to switch the light. Most times, I can attribute the failure to me either flipping the switch to fast or to slow.
The toggles themselves feel sturdy, though not as much so as a mechanical switch. I've noticed that my cover plate doesn't fit as tightly to the receiver switch as well as it did to the old switch. Even with the screws tightened, it still can wiggle a bit. Not a big deal, but a fit and finish issue none the less.
Being an electronic device, this switch will consume some power at all times, but the amount is small. However, it is this aspect that makes the switch unuseable with CFLs: though I wonder if dimmable CFLs would be okay with it?
Overall, I'm satisfied with the switch, yet the lack of a grounding lug for use with newer wireing practices, it's incompatiblity with CFLs and possibly LED lights, and the fit and finish issue with the cover plate give it 4 stars.
One last thing, If you run into the grounding wire issue, It might be tempting to drill into the flange of the switch and secure the wire with a nut and bolt. Don't. While I'm not certain, the flanges might be aluminum witch if connected directly to copper will result in corrosion of both parts and possibly malfunction of the device and other problems.
