Tools and Hardware Reviews of Heath/Zenith SL-6153-C Wireless Battery-Operated Door Chime with Plastic Chime Cover, Off-White

Customer Review: Does Exacly What You Bought It To Do
Summary: 5 Stars

This doorbell has been a gift from on high as far as I'm concerned. I live in a major city on the third floor of a converted brownstone, in the heart of the business district. My apartment had of course at one point been part of a single family home, but the bell wiring was never at any point converted over to accommodate what is now a 7 apartment residence. All of us missed getting a lot of packages. I asked the landlord if it was alright for me to install a wireless bell, he agreed, and I haven't missed a package since.

The chime's volume is adjustable, and can be set to very *LOUD* folks. Missing a package or visitor because you didn't hear it ring is just not going to happen. It came with both double sided tape and screws as options to attach the bell to a door or panel; I chose the tape as I don't own this property, and it's stuck fast through rain and intense cold for the last three months. Hopefully, I'll be able to say the same after the summer's over.

I should also mention that I haven't, to this point, experienced problems with this bell going off because someone activated their car alarm or, more significantly, because of the two additional wireless bells that others in my building also now have attached to the door. Even if this had been the case, this model has eight jumpers that allow you to change the bell's frequency (and tone). If you find that you're having problems with the bell randomly ringing, just open it up and switch a few jumpers around until you find a frequency that's sufficiently different from the ones around you that are causing you problems; the instructions show very clearly how to do this, and it's easy (I've done it once already; not because I was having a problem, but because I wanted the bell to have a specific tone). There are dozens of combinations to choose from.

This is a fantastic product for the price. Highly recommended.

Customer Review: Tone quality lacking...
Summary: 4 Stars

This doorbell functions nicely, has a good range, and the button functions easily with a press. I haven't had anyone ring this bell and it not respond yet. I am however a little disappointed in the tonal quality of the bell. The bell sounds a little 'brassy' and too loud for the speaker. It sounds like they are trying to get too much volume out of an inferiour speaker resulting in a 'tinny' rattling distortion. Over distance it is ok, but up close it is rather annoying. But Westminster chimes are always soothing enough, even if distorted a bit. A decent product for a good price.

To amend this review, however, I have found that the door bell fails to chime after the remote is pushed on numerous occasions. I tested the bell after this to find out that it has nothing to do with how "well" someone pushes the button or not. It just fails to transmit every so often. So, I guess this is a great doorbell if you don't want to be bother by every annoying person who comes along and rings your bell. The rings you are guaranteed to get are those by people who are persistent ringers, and if the people you want to see are persistent people, then this bell is for you. However, if you want everyone who rings to be attended to, you might want to try a better bell...

Customer Review: I should have bought this a long time ago!
Summary: 5 Stars

My doorbell has been fading out for the past 20 yrs. Guests complained many times that they rang my bell, but I could not hear it. The bell finally quit for good and I decided to try a wireless one. I wish I had bought this ages ago! It was very easy to install and the sound is great!! This thing is loud enough to hear throughout my house and I live in a two-story with a basement and attic. For the price I paid and speedy delivery I am very satisfied with my purchase.
**** UPDATE **** After 2.5 years, the doorbell stopped working. Well, it didn't completely stop, but worked sporadically. I changed the batteries multiple times (in the doorbell & chime box) thinking this was the issue. I even cleaned it out because it was exposed to the elements. Nothing really worked. I paid less than $25 for it, so overall I got what I paid for. I am going to buy a higer priced one this time to see if it will last longer.

Customer Review: 60 Feet Too Much
Summary: 2 Stars

We had a similar unit that was rated at 100 feet that did not work. We purchased this unit that was half again greater in distance, hoping that would make a difference. Sad to say, this product is intermittent at best.

Application:

We have a gate that is 60 feet away from our front door. The chime unit is inside and above the front door. We tested several placement locations before affixing the chime, and high provided the best signal reception. After the installation, we find the chime does not always pick up the signal.

If the button is pressed several times and held, the chime tends to work. But when was the last time UPS or FedEx took so much time to ring the bell?

The unit works when the distance is short, such as described by the other raters. Just beware if the distance is greater than, say 50 feet.

Customer Review: Perfect 21st Century Solution
Summary: 5 Stars

My doorbell stopped working. I really didn't feel like chasing wires, transformers, etc., throughout the house. When I heard that there were wireless doorbells available, I thought, "Of course! This is the twenty first century! Why use a 19th century technology?"

I selected this particular Heath-Zenith product, although there were many others with slightly different capabilities (more or fewer chime options; multiple doors; plug-in rather than battery; etc.). I also picked this one because the outdoor button could be screwed to the door jamb; many only had the option of double-stick tape, which struck me as unreliable.

It installed in minutes. It works great. I'm completely happy with it. How often can you say that?
