Tools and Hardware Reviews of Heath/Zenith SL-6164-B Wireless Battery-Operated Musical Door Chime Kit with 64 Tunes, WhiteCustomer Review: Greensleeves, oh my! Summary: 5 Stars
I did a price search prior to purchasing and Amazon was clearly the least expensive with the added bonus of FS. When it arrived it took minutes to set up and it worked perfectly! The color is the same as pictured, not a bright white, but not off white either. Greensleeves is one of my favorite songs so I was very pleased it was a choice. The volume is adjustable and loud is LOUD. To change a tune, you select A-D w/ a tiny push up/down switch. Each letter represents 16 songs w/ corresponding pins. I have small hands but it was still a bit tricky to pull out the "pin connector" and reinsert it on the desired pins. The next time I will either use car fuse tongs or tweezers. I wish the song section had a dot or # at every 4th song, as I had to get my reading glasses out to make certain I was selecting the desired song. As a plus they include a few extra pin connectors, I guess they anticipated it would get dropped and lost since they are small and black in color, maybe red would have been a better color choice. You can also change the chime and doorbell button codes if you have wireless interference, basically the same process as changes the song. All screws and double faced tape is included and the doorbell battery. The only thing you need to have on hand is 3 D batteries. I plan on changing the songs throughout the holiday season since at least 6-8 or more are holiday songs. I think it is a great unusual door chime that has the advantage of working during hurricane season.
Customer Review: didn't work for us Summary: 2 Stars
Between the front door and the main unit is less than 15 ft. The first one worked intermittently. So we bought a second one. Again, it worked only **intermittently** and eventually (2 years) didn't work at all. Changing to fresh batteries didn't make any difference. I'd have to bring the pushbutton inside to within 5 feet of the main unit to trigger it. It was frustrating. I installed a door knocker so people could alert us of their presence. The pushbutton is well protected from rain on our front porch, but not from humidity ... I don't know if that has anything to do with it. The battery holder on the pushbutton tends to fail so that it doesn't hold the battery securely. The contact on the pushbutton also fails with time and not make proper contact. Bottom line, we bought two of these chimes and both didn't work well. The little jumpers provided for changing tunes wasn't easy to use either. Jumpers with grip tabs are available on the market; hopefully their later production runs use those instead. I think I'll be looking into wired solutions at this point.
Customer Review: My aunt thinks I'm the best! Summary: 4 Stars
I usually fix items at my aunt's home when I visit, and during the past 2 visits I noticed her side door doorbell no longer worked. I had fixed it, but they had some other electrical work done on the house which shorted out the fixed one (and the electrician had the nerve to say that it was wired wrong to begin with...funny: from what I was told, he rung that doorbell to make his presence known!). Well, since I rarely visit my aunt (and when I do, there's so many other details that require my attention where I do not have tinkering-time), I thought: "What a novel idea to get her a wireless doorbell?" Actually, I wanted this for my back door but that's my aunt so...overall, the item arrived on time, in good condition. I have to say unfortunately, but that's my aunt (she's waiting for my next visit so I can set it up with one of the fancier chimes out of the 64-tones rather than the typical "bing-bong") I cannot attest to the workmanship of the item . Still, a wonderful & appreciated Christmas present!
Customer Review: No range, doesn't work through walls Summary: 1 Stars
I purchased this because our townhome is situated where our back patio faces the parking so when deliveries come they always go to our back door. The gate to our patio is about 8 feet from the back doors.
I initially wanted to place the doorbell near our front doorbell which is mounted in our stairwell between the first and second floors so we could hear it from both up and downstairs. This placement was about 20 feet from the button and the signal would need to pass through our sliding glass door and one wall. It wouldn't work.
Second we moved it all the way upstairs to the hallway where it would be closer to the button and the signal would only have to travel through one wall. Still nothing.
Finally we put it on the windowsill of the Master Bedroom overlooking the button and it worked. Only now, we can't hear it if we are downstairs. So we ended up putting in on the downstairs windowsill 8 ft from the button and it works.
Customer Review: Rin Tin Tinny Summary: 2 Stars
Not recommending this product. Very tinny sounding considering it has a decent sized speaker in it. Very hard to get both the main unit and the doorbell apart. 3 D cells make it weigh a ton. Song selection controls are very antiquated for this day and age. 16 embedded DIP jumpers and a slide switch. Still the unit does work and plays songs but is hardly what you want in your $240,000 home. My old fashioned wired ding-dong chime sounded better! loud even at the lowest setting. Have not had a chance to get it all setup yet. Will add more if I change my mind about it. On the plus side has a 5 year warranty - won't do me much good since I bought it on the Bay.
Blessings,
