Customer Review: Completely unreliable - must be defective unit

This is an additional unit for a Heath Zenith SL-6166-C Wireless Door Chime, White for entry at a back gate. As soon as it was unpackaged and the battery installed I pushed the button and the doorbell sounded. Great, I thought. I put the back cover on, pressed the button again , and nothing. Pushed it a second, third and fourth time with no better results. After removing the cover again and removing and reinstalling the battery I pressed the button and heard ding dong. Put the back cover on again, pushed the button, and the only ding dong I might have heard would be the sound if the four letter words eminating from my mouth were being bleeped out. After adjusting the battery contacts and making sure they were clean I got it to work again. Applied the mounting tape to stick it on the house, pressed the button before mounting it to the door frame and it worked. Put it on the house, pressed the button and I heard only four letter words again. Thumped it with my finger out of pure frushtration and it worked. Can we say, "Pulling out my hair will make me bald?"
As far as the unit itself, it is a compact size with a pretty decent range. Inside there is a jumper which allows you to choose between the ding-dong or just ding so you can distinguish between various locations. When it works properly, like my original push button, it's really great, allowing you to place it where no doorbell wiring currently exists.
The push button that came with the chime works flawlessly so I really don't understand what's up with this one. I have a repair service coming to replace a garage door opener today and will find out if it works when they come to the gate. If it continues to work for at least a few weeks I may keep it, if after the two weeks it is still unreliable I'll probably return it for a refund and buy the Wireless Indoor/outdoor Protable Intercom-weatherproof I had considered to begin with. Unfortunately, it's reliability doesn't look so good either based on the Amazon reviews and it's a lot more expensive.
Well the repair crew just arrived and the dang thing didn't work. It's being returned to Amazon. They risked a dog bite by coming through the gate to knock on the back door. It gets two stars instead of one simply because when these push buttons work, they work well.
