Customer Review: Good replacement for Mepla

Bought these Hettich hinges along with 0 mm Mounting Plate (face frame) to replace Mepla hinges installed by cabinet maker. In my case the cabinet doors overlay the face frame. Euro style hinges are hidden spring loaded hinges that fit in flat bottomed holes made in the door with a Forstner drill bit, which makes them easy to install if you have the right drill bit. I believe the drill size is pretty much standard. For face frame cabinets (typical in the US), you need to use a face frame mounting plate designed for the hinge to mount the doors. You buy hinge and mounting plate separately.
The Hettich hinges are better than the Mepla hinges I replaced. Mepla held in place on the mounting plate by a screw that tended to work loose in use plus re-adjustment was a constant hassle - also over about a 10 year period, many of the Mepla hinges broke in the sense that a clip on a retention plate snapped off, allowing the door to sag, which is why I had to replace them. The Hettich hinges and mounting plates have the same form factor as the Meplas, so replacement was painless. They also snap in place with a retention spring that makes door install/removal easy. The reason they are 4-star instead of 5 is because one of the adjusting screws can be turned in too far, causing it to unseat ... it's very difficult to get it to reseat so that the hinge can be adjusted again, so you learn in a hurry to be careful not to turn it too far. If you are puzzled over the difference between 0mm face frame mounting plates and 4.5mm (which I was), think in terms of a double door cabinet ... the 4.5mm "height" of the mounting plate pushes the 2 doors 9mm towards each other. Most face frame installations with this kind of hinge will use 0mm.
