Tools and Hardware Reviews of HOMAK HS10036683 Electronic Access Pistol Box, 10 X 3.5 X 7.5 Inch

Customer Review: A little more description...
Summary: 3 Stars

This is a nice little gun safe. Please, note that I use the word "little" - if you are considering this safe, keep a few things in mind. Although the measurements are 10" x 3.5" x 7.5" the interior is quite a bit smaller - the back of the keypad is open on the interior. It has to be - you must be able to replace the battery and change your code. We ordered four HOMAK safes and I have yet to be able to find the "button" to change the codes. The door opening is 7.25" X 4.75" - so be sure your pistol will fit easily through that opening. Look at the picture and see how your pistol will have to be placed in the safe and judge if that size opening is large enough. We had one pistol small enough to work. The other three HOMAK safes we ordered were the larger 10" deep size. The larger sizes make it possible for us to insert pistols to lay flat on the bottom of the safe. With this safe the pistol leans on the back of the safe - the 3.5" they mention in the description is the deepest area of the outside of the safe. If you consider the thickness of the door and the metal of the safe, you diminish the interior depth. As I said in the beginning - this is a nice "lttle" safe.

Customer Review: Good for keeping weapons away from kids
Summary: 4 Stars

This is a decent product. It is a little overpriced in my opinion, but the best affordable option available that I am aware of. It is useful for keeping a handgun safe from young children, and makes it difficult for older children to gain access. However, a really determined older child could break into the box by prying it open. If your child is the type to do something like this, don't buy this box. If you want to use the box to store valuables, it might slow down an intruder, but it would probably be smarter to just hide them.

Pros:
-The access code feature is well implemented. You can program any code you like.
-Enough space for a handgun, some ammo, and a few other things.
-Can be mounted to a wall fairly easily. This could potentially make it more difficult for a child to pry it open.
-Has the option of connecting a 9V battery to power the locking mechanism in the event that the batteries die.

Cons:
-The locking mechanism is not very durable. Could be pried open easily.
-The battery compartment is cheap. I can envision some scenarios where the batteries might fall out.

Customer Review: Don't buy this safe!
Summary: 1 Stars

Don't buy this safe!!! There are two major design flaws.
1. The first is the lack of a mechanical key backup to unlock the safe if the electronics fail. Remember, any electronic device will fail eventually. If the electronics fail you have no way to open the safe but to cut it open.
2. The second flaw is exposed wiring and battery pack on the inside. I placed a metal object in the safe and it fell against the battery terminals shorting it out. This erased the electronic combination that was programmed into the safe and it could not be opened. I had to pick up the cabinet the unit was bolted to and tilt it over to get the object to slide away from the terminals. Once the metal object slid away from the battery terminals I had to hold a 9 V battery to the external connections and re-enter the default combination. Luckily I was able to determine what had happened and did not have to destroy the cabinet it was bolted to or cut open the safe and risk damaging the contents.

Spend the extra money and buy a safe with a better design and a back up key entry in case the batteries or electronics fail.

Customer Review: Excellent Drawer Safe for the money
Summary: 5 Stars

I bought this drawer safe after looking at many others. I was tempted to spend $250 for the bio type, but kept hearing lots of complaints about how well they read finger print. I decided to buy this one just to see if it would work in my nightstand drawer without breaking the bank. I was very surprised. Very heavy and substancial - not flimsy by any means. Will it keep out a professional? No. But it absolutely will keep out children, other adult family members, and the neighborhood punk. As for any exposed wiring - it has a battery pack connected to a wire that velcroes neatly out of the way against the side and under the lip. I would not see how it could ever get shorted out if installed correctly (not rocket science). The code programs easily just read the directions. I use a pattern instead of actually remembering a code. Makes it very easy to open and quick without thinking. We have a 1 yr old baby girl (our first child) and figured it was time to lock up the guns. My wife liked it so much teh next day I ordered one for her drawer. This safe is worth far more than the $32 bucks I paid.

Customer Review: Works well, fits in drawer - holds 1 gun
Summary: 4 Stars

I bought this as a bedside solution for my gun. I have small kids in the house and couldn't keep a gun by the bed without some kind of lock box. This model (6683) is small though. Fits a sub-compact handgun and maybe would fit a slightly larger, but not by much. Fits very nicely in a small drawer though and is just the thing I needed. As some noted, it's not a safe, but a good little lockbox. I like the battery failsafe on the outside too.

I also bought a mid-size (6684) model. It arrived today and the door won't latch. It's a couple inches deeper, but since I am returning it, I am just going to get the larger one. I would think you could put th larger one under a bed or in a closet, but not in a drawer. Only the small, maybe the mid-side are for drawers. They all just the same door panel/code component, Homak just attaches a different depth box on them each.

So, though 1 of 2 has a problem, I'm still buying.
