Homax 3535 Waste-Away Paint Hardener, 3.5-Ounce
This stuff will firm-up latex paint into a solid state, but I gave it 3-star rating because a full bag only hardens ½ gallon of latex paint, instead of the advertised 2/3 gallon. (This also happens with the paint hardener powder that Lowes sells, so maybe they all use the same supplier.) I used a full bag in an attempt to harden 2/3 gallon, which it's supposed to do. (You have to stir thoroughly.) When it didn't harden by the next day, more hardener product was added to the now gooey paint, which had became really difficult to mix. Our county landfill says paint must be solid; there's no mention of gooey.
If you need to harden oil-based paint/stain, or newer oil-based paints such as Rustoleum or Pratt & Lambert industrial, use an oil-absorbent. Oil-absorbent is a light-weight and highly porous material that's typically used on garage floors to soak up oil-spills. But, it also absorbs [liquid] oil-based paint when thoroughly mixed at a near equal ratio, volume wise. (I.e., 50/50 or 60/40 with "60" being the paint.) Mixed this way, oil-based paints and stains should harden firmly by the next day. Although many Internet sites sell oil-absorbent, you can avoid high shipping costs by buying locally from an auto parts/accessory store such as AutoZone, Advance Auto Parts, or Pep Boys. A 10 pound bag should cost around three dollars and harden at least two gallons of oil-based paint.
