I found these very easy to use. Just crush, shake and rub on what you wish to test. I was a bit confused when I got a yellow/orangish color as some others also mentioned but I found their site online which explained that. Apparantly the yellow color is just the chemical in it and you should see that. Pink or red is what you hope to not see. That means lead! I wish they explained all that in the insert a bit more but it is online in detail should you need it...Customer Review: Works exactly as described.

Follow the directions, and this works very well. After not finding lead on my plates, I tested the stick on a surface that I was certain contained lead, and the tip immediately turned a bright pink.Customer Review: These worked great. Instructions could be better

I wanted to test the paint in our room before i started sanding. At first everything I tested went was from a yellow to a sort of an yellow orange color, which the instructions did not explain. After spending sometime on there website I found orange signifies barium which is a lead substitute. Also I tested some paint in another area and got purple, which signifies there is tin in the paint. Eventually I came a cross a painted area inside our air ducts behind the vent. (Why the inside of our vent was painted i have no idea) I tested this and it turned a reddish pink. There is a detailed color chart on there website which i compared it to and it was around 8% lead. Yikes. guess I will be removing my ductwork.
After doing a few of these tests I learned to lightly rub the tip of the tester into the paint for 30 seconds, don't mash it in too hard or you wont get good results.
All in all this worked great. They really should put the information on there website in the instructions though.

This product was well-reviewed by Consumer Reports and seems to live up to the review. It is easy to use. As another reviewer pointed out, be aware that red paint requires special handling because it can result in a false positive. I followed the direction to rub the item with vinegar and rinse and dry it. This eliminated the false positive reading I was getting.Customer Review: Home Lead Test

The test kits used to check suspected funishings for lead. It identified two sets of louvered blinds as having lead in their composition. We have disposed of these and happy we used this test to check.
