Tools and Hardware Reviews of Homax 5250 Household Lead Test KitCustomer Review: Not sensitive enough Summary: 1 Stars
I used this test to check for lead in a variety of inexpensive Mexican ceramics that I knew contained lead in the glaze. At no point was there any color change. However, I next tested the same ceramics with a acid leach test from Abotex, and received a positive result. (The Abotex Instant Results swab test was also a false negative.)
With this test's inability to register unsafe lead levels at around 5 ppm, I have to wonder, why take a test if you can't trust the results?
A false negative is a false sense of security.
Customer Review: Easy to use Summary: 4 Stars
I found these very easy to use. Just crush, shake and rub on what you wish to test. I was a bit confused when I got a yellow/orangish color as some others also mentioned but I found their site online which explained that. Apparantly the yellow color is just the chemical in it and you should see that. Pink or red is what you hope to not see. That means lead! I wish they explained all that in the insert a bit more but it is online in detail should you need it...
Customer Review: Simple way to check for lead paint Summary: 5 Stars
Easy as 1-2-3.
Crush the areas of the 'wand' where indicated, squeeze liquid to tip, rub on to surface.
At first I wondered if I might know when lead paint was identified; if you have lead paint, you'll know. The tip turns bright scarlett red, not to be missed. If you're left uncertain, you don't have lead paint. There would be no way to miss the change in color which is automatic and dramatic.
Customer Review: As advertized Summary: 4 Stars
This product was well-reviewed by Consumer Reports and seems to live up to the review. It is easy to use. As another reviewer pointed out, be aware that red paint requires special handling because it can result in a false positive. I followed the direction to rub the item with vinegar and rinse and dry it. This eliminated the false positive reading I was getting.
Customer Review: Set me mind at ease Summary: 4 Stars
I was very nervous about a building that we are restoring that was built at the turn of the century, and was painted (over brick, inside) many years ago. After using this product to test four different spots, I was so happy and relieved to see that there was no signs of lead paint.
Thanks for setting my mind at ease.
