Tools and Hardware Reviews of Enviracaire 60001 Grade Air Purifier with IFD Filter

Customer Review: I have adjusted my expectations
Summary: 3 Stars

I have owned my unit for years. We have no pets, we don't smoke (we do burn candles infrequently), and the predominant issue we have to deal with is dust and pollen.

I was disappointed when I first got this unit because it did not "seem" to clean the air as well or as thoroughly as I expected. However, I can attest that the filter in my particular unit definitely is catching something and getting good and dirty doing it. AND, I notice that in the winter when the doors are mostly kept closed, I never have to dust at all.

I am conflicted about the filthy filter. But I find I am not alone (see this review, which includes pictures of the dirty filter [...]I cannot get it to stop looking dirty, but vacuuming it out does appear to "refresh" its performance, which is all I really care about.

I have owned other air purifiers that have generated far more ozone than this unit. If this unit generates a large amount of ozone, I don't notice it.

At this point, it performs well enough that I have no desire to seek another, and aside from the "filter reset" not working anymore (it is just the timer reset to remind you when to clean the filter), it still performs as well as it did at the beginning. But if I were in the market for a new air purifier (for instance, if this one broke down), I would probably not select this one simply because I never feel I can get the unit clean to my satisfaction.

[...] like a really good price for this air purifier. I would buy it again if I were strapped for money, but I still believe I would opt for a better, higher performance air purifier if I could.

Customer Review: Displeased ......
Summary: 3 Stars

I purchased this unit and used it for about one week. The reason I bought this unit was that when the sunlight came in the picture window just right, you can see the cloud of particles floating in the air.

So I bought this filter and placed it dead center of the area illuminated by the sunlight. After running the unit for 24 hrs/day for about 8 days on low and a couple 4-5 hour periods on high, I inspected the filter for debris/dust. I was surprised to find no dust accumilation at all. As a matter of fact, the only dust that could be found in the unit at all was on the large particle screen in which the holes are so large, it would be large enough to permit small insects can get through with no problems.

Thinking that it was defective (i.e. the voltage creating device could be bad and how would you know), I returned the unit. I also purchased a MIRV 11 HVAC filter which purports to clean the air of the same types of particles. I intended to provide myself a reference point when judgeing the IFD results.

After 14 days of 24 hr/day low operation, I can tell the difference between the AC filter and the IFD. The AC filter is aquiring a fine covering of dust turning the filter off-white. The IFD has not accumiliated any significant dust. Again, the only thing getting dusty is the "pre-filter" which is a plastic pad with lots of large holes.

At this point, I cannot believe that this filter system works and I have decided to return it.

Oh, the only quiet setting is low. Hi is quite noisy.

Hope this helps......

Customer Review: Patients with lungs disease BEWARE!!!
Summary: 1 Stars

Do not buy this filter if you suffer from any lungs disease.

The high amounts of ozone expelled by the Honeywell IFD-60001 electrostatic filter is such, that will quickly damage the tissue and cells of your lungs. Ozone exposure at such high rates increases your possibilities of getting infections and stiffness of your bronchus.

My wife has suffered from both after one night sleeping with it in the room. One month after the exposure she still cannot sleep from her asthma, the test shows high level of oxidative stress and inflamation in the lungs. She had no asthma from three years before being exposed to the IFD-60001E. She has had a brochitis two times since then.

I don't suffer from lungs disease, but I got a strong headage and a brochitis after a whole day of exposure in the living room of our home. The filter has an ionizer that reduces the huge amounts of ozone that it generates. Still, it produces too much ozone. Honeywell has phased-out all IFD electrostatic filters from the USA, but it is still selling at half price the remaining US stocks in the European Union.

I repeat, if you have a respiratory disease do not buy it. You will severely damage your lungs. There are other filters that do not use electrostatic technology and does not produce ozone, go for those. Avoid any Honeywell IFD technology.

The smell of acetone eventually disapears if you leave the filter one or two weeks in the garden running at maximun power.

Customer Review: Does not clean the air
Summary: 1 Stars

I bought this purifier in hope to get rid of tobacco smoke odour in my apartment left over from the previous tenant. First unpleasant surprize was when I openned the box was that this filter smells! It smelled with acetone plastic glue so much that I had to run it for a week on the balcony in order for this glue smell to go away. After that I ran the unit inside my apartment and it did not produce any change in the air quality - the tobacco smoke odour was still there and you could see the dust particles floating in the beam of sunlight from the window. When I opened up the filter and checked it, it had no dust accumulated at all an what I notised that the quality with which it was assembled was kind of low. The plastic edges of the casing were rough and you could see the glue stains all over the IFD filter. This thing is definitely not worth two hundred dollars. Despite the fact that I had to pay shipping, I returned this unit back to the store.

Customer Review: Good value but noisy.

This is a replacement for the unit I got from Sam's Club a year ago. I have been looking for a good air cleaner with permanent filter. The first one I got from Sam's uses electrostatic precipitation which is not very efficient. In addition, it generates a lot of ozone in the room by the UV germicidal lamp. Thank God that there was a recall on that unit and I got a full refund after 10 months of use. Then I found this unit that costs 1/3 less after a $50 rebate. This one uses a so-called permanent filter that can be cleaned by vacuum. I have been using it almost every night for 2 months. The filter still needs not to be cleaned yet (YMMV). It has 3 speed settings, but only the low one can be used at night due to the noise. The timer is easy to set, but it will be better if there is backlight on the display when programming it. The rebate was received in 8 weeks as promised.
