Tools and Hardware Reviews of Honeywell 18155 SilentComfort Permanent, True HEPA Air Purifier

Customer Review: Second time's the charm ...
Summary: 4 Stars

We ordered this in an "emergency," during a pretty bad allergy event. So we were VERY disappointed when it arrived overnight --- and refused to even turn on.

Amazon, in its accustomed efficient fashion, got a new one to us the next day.

It's difficult to be completely objective about a product when the first example never functioned. This second unit, however, works beautifully! During the day it sits on the center of the bed, with the door closed. If there's any dust left in the room, it's pretty elusive. The reason is pretty clear --- the dust is very visibly trapped in the pre-filter, and, presumably, the smaller stuff is trapped in the HEPA section.

The unit is quite light and easy to handle, and the filters are easy to clean. The HEPA "doughnut" filter is very large. As far as sound goes, I wouldn't want to watch TV with it on "high" setting, but "low" would be manageable at night, if absolutely necessary.

This seems --- so far! --- to be a very good unit. It does what's required of it.

Customer Review: Huge & Can't Be set near a wall!!!!!
Summary: 4 Stars

My son has just been diagnosed with severe allergies and he is ashtmatic so we needed to purchase a air filter for his room. This one came highly recommended, so we purchased it. It was a lot bigger than we anticipated. I had visuallized a small unit that could sit up on his chest and filter air. WRONG! This has to have a 3 foot radius around it to filter properly. This means it has to sit out in the middle of his floor. This is not a good thing when space is limited for a 8 year old boy to play.(His room is about a 12X13) It also is very loud on high and medium, which is where we need it. Low is okay. It also seems to make the room cold. Maybe it is just me, but when I walk into his room, it is much cooler in there than the rest of the house. It seems to being doing a good job of cleaning the air as we checked it after about a week of using it and that is why we bought it. The fact that is cannot be sit up against the wall is the reason for the reduction in stars. It needs to be noted when you buy it.

Customer Review: Slightly disappointed, HEPA filter smells of silicon glue
Summary: 2 Stars

I own an older model Honeywell air purifier that has lasted for years. It used the same method of a HEPA filter and carbon pre-filter. The HEPA filter on this new model smells like silicon glue, and after almost two weeks of use the smell is still strong. If I had a sensitivity to glue or chemicals I would be pissed. KAZ now manufactures the Honeywell purifiers, and this one uses slightly cheaper materials than my old model: styrofoam interior, more plastic parts than metal, which makes it lighter but less durable. I hope the lifetime HEPA filter holds up once it loses the new smell. Also there were some problems at the factory, and they forgot to include the small pre-filter that sits at the base. KAZ sent me the missing part within 4 days. I can't give it a totally bad rating because I still have a lot of respect for their product concept. I just wish it worked for this product.

Customer Review: Quiet, seems to work well, but really big and bulky
Summary: 3 Stars

We've only had this product for around a month. It does seem to help clear out allergens well. Even though you get the dimensions, it is really big. It takes up A LOT of space and you have to keep it a certain distance from walls and furniture which is not easy to do because of it's size. Also, if you don't have dark carpet they recommend you put a mat under it or it could stain your rug. It seems to do the job it is supposed to and it's not too noisy if set at medium or low. I like that it has a light that lets me know when the HEPA filter and Prefilter need replaced. If it proves the difference between being healthy (my child and I both have asthma) and being sick all the time, I would buy another one. But, if there is another less bulky product that costs less(we are trying out a Holmes right now too) and works as well then I would probably get something else to save space.

Customer Review: less than expected
Summary: 2 Stars

I'm not sure why this product received so many 5 star reviews. I was sold on this product after reading customer reviews but my experience has been less than expected. I needed an air purifier to reduce tobacco odor in my bedroom but it's not doing its job. I only smoke a couple of cigarettes a day. My friend has one that almost eliminates tabacco odor but it's an ionized air purifier which many reviewers on this web site discouraged me from buying. This product seems to reduce air particles but again you won't be satisfied if you expect to get rid of more than 50-60% of odor/dirt. There was a debate amongst many reviewers about its noise level. My vote is that it should not be called "Silent Comfort". It's definitely misleading. It's not too bad if you can have a little fresher air for $130 but you can probably get much more had you invested a little more.
