Customer Review: Word to the wise: moldy documents!

The inside of this box was damp on arrival, though I purchased it new. After letting it air out for a week before using it, I put my important documents in it. When I needed them again, after several months, they were all covered in brown mold! The mold stained several of my important pieces of paper, including my passport and birth certificate.
Also, the locking unit may be made of plastic, which would not hold up in a fire of course. It could be, though, just the facade of the lock that is plastic. I can't say for sure, but keep it in mind.
The mold/dampness issue alone warrants my low rating.

The 2017 is a UL classified media protection device tested to withstand an external temperature up to 1550 degrees for 1/2 hour. Most residential fires last less than 30 minutes so the 2017 is a good choice for a small document and electronic media protection solution. In addition to the UL testing, the 2017 has also been independently verified to protect electronic media, such as memory sticks, CD¿s, DVD¿s and external hard drives, in a fire. The independently verified waterproof seal on the 2017 enables the chest to float during a flood, making it easy to locate, as well as providing protection from the flood water. The 2017 includes a convenient carry handle and is secured by a clamping style latch with key lock. All Honeywell fire rated products are covered by a 5 year manufacturer¿s warranty and will be replaced free of charge if damaged in a fire.Protect important paper documents and photos from thieves, heat and flames with this electronic, digital locking steel box.
