Tools and Hardware Reviews of Honeywell 50250 99.97% Pure HEPA Round Air Purifier

Customer Review: works as advertised
Summary: 4 Stars

This product has done exactly what it claims to do: clean the air. The air feels cleaner, the dust levels have gone down, and I may even be noticing a reduction in allergy symptoms. Here's the thing, some people make all kinds of crazy claims to how life changing this thing is. Other people complain about how loud it is. Let me say this, temper your expectations to the middle and you'll be happy. You can hear this thing, period. Even on the lowest setting you can hear this thing run at night a couple of rooms away. It does clean the air. Is it going to clean every speck of dust from your house? Doubtful. Will it rid your air of every allergen? Doubtful. I can say this, after just a couple of weeks we notice a difference in the air quality in our house. We hope this equates to a reduction in allergy symptoms. Time will tell about that. Overall, I think it's money well spent on a quality built product that should last for a decade or more. If you divide the money spent over that time and factor in any health benefit associated with it, it seems more like a great investment to me. I'm happy I made the purchase. I only gave 4 out of 5 stars because it is a little louder than I would like for it to be. That being said, I think my expectations were out of line. Honeywell did not make any claim to how quiet or loud the unit is. I got my info related to that from reviews like this one, which as we know, are worth what we pay for them ;-)

Customer Review: Solution for nightlight-beacon
Summary: 4 Stars

The solution for the nightlight is simple. Cover it with a jar lid. Go to your kitchen and find a screw-on lid from a jar. Any lid that is about 2 1/4 to 3 inches in diameter will work....a jar of applesauce, gravey, spaghetti sauce, whatever. Place it over the dial/light area and duct tape it down on the high side. Then you can flip it up from the bottom to turn the thing on and off, and flip it back down when you're done. The bright light is gone. There is still a little light that seeps out around the top of the machine, just enough to see where it is in the dark, but there is no longer a bright beacon that bounces off the ceiling and lights up the whole room.

This is the second Honeywell air purifier I've had and I love it. The first one finally died after eight years of nightly use. Our bedroom is large so I needed another big unit. I was a little hesitant to get this model after reading about the loudness and the light in the reviews. But I took the gamble. The noise is the same as the older model I had..not that bad. Just background noise that is good to sleep to. The light really is bright and does bounce off the ceiling like an airport beacon. But it's easy to cover up as I described above and that problem is solved. I gave it only 4 stars instead of 5 because I had to find a solution for the bright light. But it is serving me very well for my purpose...breathing easy while sleeping well.

Customer Review: It works - but too many issues: cord length, soils carpeting, etc
Summary: 3 Stars

The Honeywell 50250 air cleaner does remove the dust, but not cooking odors. The electrical cord is too short, can't be used directly on your good carpeting or rugs, and is noisey on all fan levels.

The unit's large size is definitely good for large rooms. The specifications are good (carbon pre-filter, true HEPA filter and moving large volume of air - but too many issues with this model).

The unit's electrical cord is too short for practical use. It is recommended to use it 3 feet from anything; but finding an outlet and clear spot within range of the 6 foot cord is hard - an 8 foor retractable cord would have been great. (manufacture recommends not using extension cords)

It is also recommended not to place it on anything you don't want to get dirty from the dust being pulled in (so I place it on a "cheap" rug that I carry around with the unit).

The unit exhausts a large volume of cool air. I don't know how it pulls the dust in, as I can watch the dust in the air near the unit get blown away because of the huge amount of exhaust air from the top.

It does work, the pre-filter was dirty after the initial two days of full time use.
Try to get one with a retracable electrical cord, that isn't as noisey, and can be placed on good carpeting or rugs.

Customer Review: Yes, it is loud, BUT....
Summary: 5 Stars

Over the years, we have purchased more than a few air purifiers, and have probably spent over a thousand or two in doing so. Ionic breezes, Hunters, Orecks, and Envirocares are a few that I can recall. We live in So Cal and do not have the best air quality. Many of our previous purchases were quite good at removing odors and pollutants. Dust removal was another issue, as nothing seemed to do an acceptable job. I have purchased the Home Depot version of this product (The only difference is that it is black) and have finally solved our dust problem. The answer is quite simple - To remove dirt / dust from the air, you must cause the air to MOVE, and be collected by a HEPA filter. Moving air causes noise - the more air movement, the more noise.
ON high speed, this unit is loud, and extremely effective. The permanent (semi-permanent, about 3 year) Hepa filter also avoids the significant costs of other HEPA brands. Other technologies involve flooding the air with ions or ozone (Yuck!) and causing dirt/dust to fall to the floor or collect on horizontal surfaces, where it is quickly returned to the air by vacuuming or whatever. As this unit is portable, we move it from room to room, close off that room for a few hours, and let it roar. The house has never been cleaner. A Great value for the money.

Customer Review: A powerful, effective air purifier
Summary: 5 Stars

This is a fantastic product. I use it in a bedroom that I use for storage and where I keep my cats' litter boxes. I have three cats and they can kick up some litter dust.

The Honeywell 50250 99.97% Pure HEPA Round Air Purifier is heavy duty and is recommended for large rooms; it is actually large for the room I have it in, but it is very effective. The door to the room is open enough to allow the cats access, and since I'm not in the room, I leave the unit on the high setting 24 hours a day. The purifier pulls air in on all sides and expels clean air from venting at the very top of the unit. The expelled air is cool and creates quite a draft so this may be a consideration when used. On the "high" and "medium" settings this purifier is loud; on the "low" setting it is fairly quiet (about as quiet as the Honeywell Silent Comfort model is on the high setting).

Overall I am very satisfied with this product. I have noticed a major decrease in the amount of dust that seemed to coat everything in this storage room prior to using this purifier. About every three months the pre-filter light comes on indicating it needs to be replaced. When I change the charcoal pre-filter I can't believe the amount of very fine litter dust (powder) and other pollutants the filter has trapped.
