Tools and Hardware Reviews of Honeywell HCM-6009 QuietCare 9-Gallon Output Console Humidifier with Air Washing TechnologyCustomer Review: Loud and Ineffective Humidifier Summary: 1 Stars
I bought this Honeywell humidifier to bring humidity to our 1900 square foot home. I wasn't sure if it would add moisture to the air in all rooms, but I figured it would at least help on the main level of our home where the humidifier was placed. I set it up in our living room which opens up to our kitchen and one other small room. The directions said to turn the unit in and leave it on high until the deisred humidity level is reached. Well, it never reached the desired level. After leaving it on high for alsmot 20 hours, the humidity level in our living room climbed from 30% to 36%. An improvement, yes, but not the humidity level we were trying to achieve. We would ideally like to be in the 40s. The machine is LOUD. I'm sure that it wouldn't sound so loud if it wasn't running on high, but I never had the opportunity to find out. I was also under the impression that this unit had the air washing technology, but it does not. Not unless you count the standard filter inside as the technology. I believe the nicer units have this feature, but not the HCM-6009. This is a very basic unit. The manual includes instructions for several of the units and you learn just how basic this unit is once you start reading about the others. I would be all for basic if the unit actually provided humidity and did so quietly, but this one just didn't deliver. The one positive was the return process. Honeywell took the unit back with no problem and refunded me the full amount. I believe there are better units out there. I'm moving on to the the Kenmore 12 gallon. It looks promising...
Customer Review: Form and function pros and cons Summary: 4 Stars
I really debated about giving this item three or four start. I decided on four because bottom line it does a good job getting moisture in the air and some design items work well. For instance, it is on wheels so it is easy to move and the water fill containers are manageable. They had the forsight to make two instead of one and the handles are comfortable.
Now for some negatives. At the highest setting, it is still pretty loud. I live in a condo so, if I'm watching TV I usually keep it on the second highest setting or wear headphones and keep it at the highest setting. Here is another noise issue- when it starts getting empty, a loud humm starts up. Another thing I don't like is that you can't control or see what the humidity level is- it just kicks out. I think this feature is available on a higher model but it seems like it should be available on this one for the price they are asking.
Probably the biggest issue I have with this unit is that it has a side discharge for air rather than through the top like most units. This is an issue for me because when I watch TV I usually sit on the floor (TV over a fireplace would never work for me) and this unit blows COLD AIR out and it is quite uncomfortable. You could make the argument to move it somewhere else, but for maximum benefit you should keep it where you spend most of your time.
So ther you have it. I probably should give it three stars but it does what its supposed to do well- with some design issues.
Customer Review: Good idea poor execution Summary: 2 Stars
The good: Finally found a humidifier that can humidify more than one room. When it works, the life is good. It is quiet enough on middle fan setting to read near it and on a low fan setting to sleep near it.
The bad: Quality control is very poor. I had to return one humidifier because the humidistat failed within the first week. The replacement has been working for a week so far without any problems.
The ugly: Horrible water container valve design. Sometimes they deliver the water to the wick, sometimes they don't. I had to fight that battle with both humidifiers that I brought home. I would wake up in the morning with the machine that turned itself off because the wick is dry; however one of the containers is filled with water to the rim. The valve just stops the water from leaving the bottle. The air pressure in the container drops and forces the valve closed; after that unless one reopens the valve the water sits in the container forever and the humidifier is not working.
I wish Honeywell spent another $0.05 on the material of the plastic valve. Would have made much better product.
As is, one has to constantly watch the humidifier and check that the wick is wet.
A later addition:
I owned it now for 6 month. The wick has died. It fell apart. I bought a new one. The problem with tanks not dispensing water persists. All-in-all I stand by my two stars
Customer Review: Works well, but kind of bulky Summary: 4 Stars
I purchased this humidifier about 2 years ago because winter and radiant heat have a way of sucking any moisture out of the air. I have eczema and own two cats so the super-dry air during winter made my life difficult. I purchased this because unlike many others I looked at, this one has a HEPA filtration system. It works great at keeping my 500 sq ft studio humidified all winter long. It is quiet except when the water is getting low in the tanks; then it get noticeably louder, and kind of reminds you to fill it up. I like that you can set the humidity as well as the fan speed (I like it on the lowest speed since I don't need much more than that for my tiny place) and that it cycles on and off as needed. One con is that it has quite a large footprint. Another con is the way you have to fill up the tanks. The screw-caps are on the bottom while the top of the tanks have handles, so they can't be set down due to a lack of any flat surface. But I found that if I take it to my kitchen sink and use the hose sprayer to fill it while cradling the tank in one arm, it's doable. But I can see how this might be inconvenient or impossible for some as the tanks get pretty heavy after filling. Another note: this humidifier doesn't do much if you leave the windows open. Overall, I'm happy with my purchase. The humidity makes such a difference, especially when I wake in the morning without a bloody nose or chapped lips, and with soft, supple skin.
Customer Review: Does the job Summary: 5 Stars
I've had this humidifier for over a month now and I love it. It's very easy to take the tanks out and return them to the base unit. I would agree with other reviewers that having the fill hole on top next the handle would have been nice. Or making the top where the handles are flatter so the tanks would sit better. However, I have found that I CAN set them up in my sink and let them fill. A little "wobbly" but it works. Also, found that holding the tank so that the handle hangs just over edge of sink lets it sit nicely. All I do is hold the thing steady and in 1 min 15 secs(yes, I timed it) a tank is filled. I figured that from the moment I pick up the two tanks from the unit and get them filled and bank into the unit about 4 min have passed. Not a big price to pay to get rid of that dry, dry air in my living room.
As far as capacity, I've found that the two tanks will last a solid 6-8 hours running on med fan speed. I run on low when I'm not home during day and then crank it to high when I get home, then back down to med over night.
As for cost of filters...if I have to buy two during the winter season then that is low price to pay for the comfort I get in return. (Heck, my heating bill is $200 some months so an extra $10 or so a month isn't so much.)
Bottom line...don't let some of these neg reviews influence you...this is a solid unit.
