Tools and Hardware Reviews of Honeywell HCM-6011i QuietCare 11-Gallon Console Humidifier with Air Washing Technology

Customer Review: Questionable quality
Summary: 3 Stars

The good news is that this unit is relatively quiet and that it does, in fact, humidify.

The bad news is that
--The two water tanks fit into the base so imprecisely that you never know whether the valves are open or closed until the unit shuts off for lack of water.
--The lack of precision in the fit causes the tanks to start vibrating loudly, which requires us to get up in the middle of the night to jiggle the tanks to try to stop the noise.
--The tank walls are so thin, and the bonded joints so precarious, that one mild bump while they're filled with water can crack them. I had to repair mine with aquarium glue only a couple of weeks of owning it.
--The flotation valve that shuts the unit off when the water is low can stick either in the on or off position. This means the unit may run even when dry (not a good thing) or it may require poking around with the switch to get the unit to run.
--Though this unit is promised to humidify a space up to 2,300 square feet, on a cold day when our head pump is working hard, this unit struggles to bring the humidity in our 1,000 square feet lower level up to the minimum 35% recommended.

Definitely not a happy owner!

Customer Review: Gets the job done
Summary: 4 Stars

I live in an "R2000" house -- a high-efficiency house with an air/heat exchange unit that exchanges the air in the house continuously with outside (low relative humidity) air.

When I purchased this unit, the relative humidity in my 2000-square-foot house was ca. 30%. Within a few hours, the hygrometre gave a reading of just over 40%. For a couple of days, I refilled both tanks twice a day, until it reached ca. 45%-50% depending on where in the house I placed the hygrometre. But after that, I have filled both tanks once a day, and run the unit at 45% at the top fan speed during the day and the low fan speed from when I "turn in" till I rise in the morning.

So far, I haven't run into mold problems, nor do I find filling the tanks to be difficult. As long as I don't over-tighten, the lids come off reasonably easily. All the parts easily fit on the base.

I notice a big difference in the comfort of the house, the "damp chaser" on my grand piano doesn't work as hard, and I lowered the thermostat setting for my natural gas central, forced-air heating by a degree or two because the house feels warmer.

So far, I recommend it.

Customer Review: A few kinks
Summary: 3 Stars

I bought this unit in mid-november for my 2 bedroom apartment. Overall it does a good job of maintaining a comfortable level of humidity typically around 45-50%. However the unit is constantly ON. It never cycles and this is with the humidistat set at just off of it's lowest setting and the fan speed on the mid setting which will give you tolerable noise level. What has caused me concern is how quickly the filter has gotten mouldy and that the air out of the unit smells like musty. I have changed the the Protec cartridge as recommended every 30 days and cleaned the filter several times per the instructions in the manual. I phoned the manufacturer (Kaz not Honeywell) and they say the filter will only last 1 to 3 months and that it needs to be cleaned every week. I pointed out that no where in the manual does it state that frequent a cleaning period nor such a short filter life and that in-fact it states that the filter should last one season. She said sorry and that there is nothing they can or will do other that tell you where you can get a new filter for $11.

Customer Review: already had to return

We researched and researched a humidifier for us...we felt we made a good decision...the day we rec'd it...we opened it and set it up...we followed step by step...the lights would flash but it never started up...after a horribly long wait (very difficult to get to a live person) to KAZ (not honeywell) on the phone...the nice service man apologized and said the fan does not work on our new humidifier. We decided to return it to the maker instead of amazon because we really need this humidifier for medical reasons (didn't want another faulty one or for amazon to say nothing was wrong with it - and since KAZ admitted to what the probelm was (i took the man's name)...i had to pay $20 to ship it to them. Now what KAZ didn't tell me (until i emailed them recently) was that it would take 6-8 weeks to get another one. I should have returned to amazon (plus shipping would have been pd for). I hope someone else can learn from what we went through. SO...whether this product is good or not - not sure yet - maybe in 8 After the winter is over!

Customer Review: Design and Instructions need amending
Summary: 3 Stars

I bought one unit and returned it when it became undependable about running. The second unit had the same problems.

1) Unit's lights go out if water level in bottom pan gets too low signifying water needs to be added. The unit's trouble shooter manual doesn't identify this "operating" feature but instead refers you to other problems. This item was further confused by a poorly designed base unit. (see below)

2) Plastic bumps in unit base that press against water bottle stoppers are not high enough. The unit would frequently quit running long before water level in bottles was out. I placed 1/2" copper plumbing caps (with 1/8" cut off their ends) on top of those "bumps" and now the unit runs until the water is truly exhausted.

3) blower unit must be set exactly in place on base or float will fail to operate properly and unit won't run.

Other than these "flaws" the unit performs well and looks good.

After the unit was modified, I could re-rate it at a 4-star.
