Tools and Hardware Reviews of Honeywell HCM-800 QuietCare PermaFilter HumidifierCustomer Review: Love the Humidifier / Very DECEPTIVE Filter Summary: 2 Stars
Attention: Honeywell/KAZ - Take the words "permanent filter" off your labeling and offer us a rack of optional replacement filters beside your product. You have a very nice humidifier, but a lousy filter.
After previous years of owning awkward large humidifier units, I purchased 2 of the compact Honeywell HCM-800 cool-air humidifiers 2 years ago from Home Depot. I need 24/7 humidity for citrus trees I overwinter indoors.
The first season of operation was great. I had a bumper crop of citrus blooms. The unit has adjustable moisture controls that work very well. Its compact, with an easy to fill water tank, I like the white noise, and of course the pretty little waterfall under blue light is cool to watch. It was not too much trouble to keep clean and I was very happy with my purchase. The 2nd season was a complete failure...why?... because the filters were shot. I would have happily bought new filters, if I could have found new filters, anywhere!!! Come on Honeywell/KAZ...offer your filters at a local retail vendor!
The problem is the filter CANNOT be effectively cleaned after one season or maybe even a partial season. Every other reviewer here has the same complaint and it is safe to assume that Honeywell/KAZ have directly received a couple years worth of complaints due to the "permanent" filter. So why are they continuing (2009) to label this product as having a "Washable Permanent Filter"? It is very deceptive and they should take notice. By the end of one season, the filter must and should be replaced. Eventually any metal mesh media style filter will no longer absorb water resulting in considerably less humidification (properly working unit water tank should refill every 24 hrs). The stale musty smell of a degraded filter is so obnoxious, you will have to leave the room. Too bad the packaging does not show a photo of the media style filter...some people would know this style filter is NOT permanent and steer clear.
I drove around today looking for filters...still, no local availability.
Now later, I found the Amazon reviews and I've done what others here have done and called KAZ (800-554-4558) to order 2 replacements at $[...] plus $[...] shipping, delivery in about 1 week. I'm not really upset of the cost, its the fact that I can't find local retail...geez, what a scam. I like these units and I want to use again this winter season. BUT...will I go thru the trouble to call KAZ next year, or later this year...probably not. When I need a replacement panel, I usually need it today. My units could end up in a landfill (too bad) and I'll be shoppping for something with less hassle.
