Tools and Hardware Reviews of Honeywell HCM-800 QuietCare PermaFilter HumidifierCustomer Review: Shouldn't a humidifier "humidify"? Summary: 2 Stars
I concur with most of the reviews here - it is not quiet, the light is a lot brighter than it should be, and the filter is far from permanent. After a short season, with a few recommended cleanings, the filter is completely packed with minerals and will not come clean. It's nowhere near durable enough to survive a serious cleaning. On top of all that I can't say that I ever felt that it was actually doing what it purports to do. We have a relatively small bedroom (~200 sq ft at most) and even at low humidity settings the unit never turned off (it has a built in hygrometer of sorts that works like a thermostat on an A/C). Whether or not that is an indication, I never felt that the humidity level in the room increased while this unit was on, despite it going through a tank a day. I'll give it a few more weeks before canning it and buying a replacement.
Customer Review: Doesn't last a season Summary: 1 Stars
Both my friend and I bought these and neither has lasted the season. His stopped working. Mine smells strongly of mildew even though I use the protec cartridge, have scrubbed it out, cleaned the filter as well as possible, and let it dry out completely.
When I bought this I thought it would have some kind of fabric or other "permanent" filter that I could THOROUGHLY clean. This is just a paper filter like any other cool mist humidifier. It just has plastic edging so you can't easily replace it. The water runs down the middle of the filter in a small area that does not air well. This is ridiculous and the idea of this filter lasting even a season is crazy!! This is not the money-saver it claims to be. In fact the filter lasted a shorter time and any of my other wicking filters.
Customer Review: Recall this humidifier! Summary: 1 Stars
This humidifier needs to be recalled. I purchased one for the winter of 2009 and it lasted one month before it started sparking, smoking and flaming during the night. Luckily I woke up! Instead of exchanging it at the store I notified Honeywell and they exchanged it and sent me another humidifier. I started using the one they sent me this winter and it lasted just over a month and it has stopped working. Nothing - no fan or light. After reading all of the 1 Star comments I can see that there is a serious problem with this humidifier and I cannot believe it has not been recalled. This model has serious problems. Do not buy it. . . or better yet. . . don't buy any Honeywell product. Honeywell knows there are problems with this model because I sent them the one that almost caught fire.
Customer Review: Honeywell HCM-800, Not really lifelong filters Summary: 3 Stars
We have had 2 of these humidifiers for 4 years. It is obvious that the filters are not lifelong as advertised. I tried calling the 800# shown in one of the other reviews and the rep who answered the phone said she couldn't find a filter part # for the HCM-800. She also insisted that they are life long filters that should never need replacing. Both of ours are pretty crudy and the metal mesh is deteriorating. We've washed these regularly, so to say that they don't need replacing is misleading.
Although they have worked well, we're just going to buy new (non-Honeywell or Kaz) humidifiers rather than continue with finding replacement filters.
Customer Review: Works better than many others Summary: 4 Stars
While not perfect (none are) it's better than previous humidifiers we've owned.
It's easy to fill and does the basics of kicking out all the water over a reasonable time frame and keeping room moisture at a fairly reasonable level. The noise is lower than other machines but still not something to be able to sleep to.
Like all humidifiers this one requires cleaning maintenance or it becomes funky. The filter does work repeatedly but periodically needs to be soaked in water, vinegar and a drop of bleach. The tray needs periodic cleaning too.
We've owned this model for two seasons now and are still satified.
