I like the quiet care so far. I have had great success cleaning the filter by running through the dishwasher then soaking for a bit in dilute bleach water. I do think they should be replaced once in a while as it is a just a reinforced version of the disposable filters we are used to replacing monthly. They are available through [...] for about $[...].
It gives off a nice white noise, so if you're used to sleeping with a fan on anyway like we are, it's just fine.
If you're in the market for a noiseless humidifier, maybe you should go with the more expensive ultrasonic models..

This humidifier is outstanding - the best I've every had 30 years living in NE where we have the heat on 7 months a year. We use it to humidify the whole house (2600 sq feet). I like it so much that I bought a second HCM 800 as a spare in the event they stop making them. Yes you do have to clean it once a month (takes 15 minutes - follow instructions) and the filter is only really only good for 2 or 3 years but you can easily order another one on-line or by calling customer service. I totally recommend this humidifier.
Customer Review: Anyone interested in a class action suit against Honeywell for HCM - 800? Summary: 1 Stars
How is it possible to call something "permanent" and then say in the manual that the filter needs to be disposed of after one season? If a car manufacturer claimed that it had "permanent" windshield wipers, that would mean, uh, they never needed to be replaced. My wife and I bought this from Home Depot solely based on the prominent "Permanent filter" that was promoted on the box cover.

I called 800-411-0457 to order a replacement filter for this unit. They told me that the filters are out of stock and would not be available for 3-4 months...then he said AT LEAST 3-4 months. That did not sound promising. He did say I could ship the unit to KAZ and they would ship back a replacement unit...it would just cost $10 for return shipping. Not worth the hassle.
As for the functionality of the unit, it worked well but it is NOT QUIET and the blue/green light is VERY bright.

The product is falsely advertised as having a permanent filter. DESPITE taking all the steps recommended by the manual to look after the filter - it grew warped and moldy. Had to discard the filter. When I called Honewell (Kaz #) they said they had no replacement filters available for the next 2 months. The sales rep needed training as he was sarcastic and told me I had no option but to wait for a filter and he could not take an order for the product. So an ABSOLUTE waste of money.
