Tools and Hardware Reviews of Honeywell HCM650 4-Gallon QuietCare Cool Moisture HumidifierCustomer Review: Humidity inside my house went from 25% to 42%! Summary: 5 Stars
I got tired of having my house as dry as a desert during winter, plus the static shocks and super dry skin. So, this winter I decided I was going to try a humidifier. My house is around 1,800 sq.ft. so at first I considered one of those humidifiers that install directly into your AC/Heat central System. I decided not to use that one since my attic is not that well insulated and the water line might end up freezing. I started researching different "small" models and then I found this Honeywell humidifier. I liked that its tank is middle size and that it uses cool moisture. Since it is rated for 850 to 1400 sq.ft., I decided to buy 2: one for upstairs and one for downstairs.
They are easy to install. The first time you use it, it is recommended that you disinfect it using a clorox and water solution. After that you just wet the filter on regular tap water, install it, fill the tank and it is ready to work. It has 3 settings for fan speed and a digital setting for the humidity % that you want to reach (maximum being 65%), with an additional setting for auto shut-off (anywhere from 1 hour to 18 hours).
As soon as I started using them, I went for full speed and humidity. My house went in just 1.5 days to 42% humidity, which is amazing. It feels so MUCH comfortable inside now, plus the added benefit that it actually is warmer! My Central heating system would run all night trying to fight the cold weather, but with these 2 humidifiers running, my system was actually able to shut-off for most of the night.
One of the tanks came with its handle kind of loose, so I called Honeywell's Support and they sent me a new tank on the mail! (I'm still waiting for it), so that tells you that their customer support is very good.
To add to all this, Consumer Reports ranked this humidifier in the top 5 of its humidifier list and recommended it, so that tells you that this humidifier is no joke. Overall, I would highly recommend it, since my experience has been very good with it.

Noisier than ultrasonic humidifier: Air-O-Swiss AOS Ultrasonic Humidifier - 7135
Customer Review: Very good humidifier! Summary: 5 Stars
Overall, this is a good humidifier. We have one of these humidifiers, a Honeywell "warm mist" humidifier, and an Air-O-Swiss ultrasonic humidifer to humidify our 2,400 sq ft home in Phoenix, which has very low humidity especially in the winter time. This is the third season we've used this unit.
Mode of operation: This humidifier works by a filter being constantly wetted by the water in the water tank. A fan draws air through the filter, and then blows out it through the filter again. This type of filter is also referred to as an evaporative filter.
Ability to humidify: Of all three of our humidifiers, this is the king. It can raise the humidity in about half of our house between 10-25 percentage points.
Noise: Basically, think of this humidifer as a fan. At all three speeds, you can hear the fan, but it's nice quiet noise at the lowest speed, and fairly loud at the highest speed. We run it at high speed over night, low speed in the evening while we watch TV, and medium speed throughout the day.
Hygrometer accuracy: Of all three of our humidifiers, the digital hygrometer is spot on, matching the humidity on two of our stand-alone hygrometers.
Type of water that has to be used: Evaporative humidifiers are nice in that you can use straight tap water without any types of problems. We have softened water, as Phoenix water is normally pretty hard.
Ease of cleaning: Pretty easy, actually. Every couple of weeks, I just wash the tank and the base in the dishwasher (on "gentle"). There is no scale or mold, etc., to be cleaned off.
Consumables: There are two consumables: the Protec cartridge and the filter. The Protec cartridge I replace every 30 days per directions, and it's supposed to decrease the chance of mold growing in the unit. The filter I replace just every season. It *can* get really dirty, as this unit effectively acts as an airwasher, washing the dust out of the air.
Customer Review: A humidifier for an attic or a trash can ... not suitable in a bedroom Summary: 1 Stars
This item is so noisy that it is unsuitable in a bedroom. Even at minimum speed this item makes too much noise. The manufacturer certainly knows about it since it tries to hide that fact with marketing gimmick by presenting this item as quiet. To make things even worst, the fan is also too strong even at minimum speed and makes us feel cold by creating a stream of humid air in the room. Lastly this item is at least 10% off when measuring relative humidity. When set at 50% it stops when the humidity reaches about 40% only, we could live with that, however, the humidifier permanently stops for 10 seconds, then starts for 1 minute, before stoping again before restarting for another minute ... and so on ... all night long. Needless to say that it is just impossible to sleep in these conditions. The 3-year old model was much better without a fan. The design of this new model is a total failure. You should save your money or buy something else if you need a humidifier in a bedroom. The best places for this unit are in the attic or in the trash can. All the best ...
Customer Review: Finally a Great & Affordable Humidifier! Summary: 5 Stars
Finally-something that does & is what it says it will! Quality, Quiet, lasts all day & night. I love these things! I have purchased many a humidifier only to get home and have it be loud and annoying for the bedroom, also to have it run out too quick, or leave mildew on my walls and on my stuff because it didn't have any control..returned them ALL, or they gave out after only a couple of months use (Hunter) I almost had given up on the whole ordeal until I tried one of these babies! I have 2 and have had them going on 3 yrs now. I do only use them when having the furnace on in the late fall-winter-early spring. I was lucky to find black ones...how cool! I will definately buy more of them when these give out.
I go through a filter and a cartridge a month..you can tell when it needs it..
I can't say enough how great these Honeywell humidifiers are, I just hope they don't discontinue them! Thank you Amazon for keeping such a great product!
