Tools and Hardware Reviews of Honeywell HHT-011 Compact Air Purifier with Permanent HEPA Filter

Customer Review: Compact Air Cleaner - Honeywell HHT-011
Summary: 5 Stars

So far I'm happy enough with my purchase of the Honeywell HHT-011 to have purchased a second one for the spare bedroom. The product is very compact, but still moves quite a bit of air on the higher fan speeds. The highest of the three fan speeds is fairly loud, but since we use this speed as "white noise" at night, we do not find this to be a problem. The medium speed, which we run through the day, still moves enough air to keep the dust down, but is quiet enough to not notice the sound. I don't run the ionizer, which seems unnecessary to me anyway, since it has HEPA filtration. There is also a small LED "nightlight" that can be switched on while the unit is running.

The washable pre-filter is open cell foam and the main filter is a fabric HEPA with a rubber gasket. If you need something to reduce odors, what I did was replace the pre-filter with the activated charcoal filter that most air cleaners use as pre-filters. I bought a universal Honeywell pre-filter at Target (the same one I used for my Honeywell 10500? that this unit replaced) and just cut out the size I needed using the foam filter as a template. It seems to work better at reducing pet odor, and dander. When dirty, it can be disposed of and replaced with another one cut from the universal pre-filter (I figure I will get about 8 from it -for around $10). I don't know if this substitution will affect the warranty, but it doesn't seem to make the blower work any harder.

I replaced a larger Honeywell air cleaner with this unit, which is actually undersized for my room by about a third, and haven't noticed any increase in dust, odors or anything else. My last Honeywell ran almost continuously for just over three years before the blower started rattling. If I get half that for this unit at just under a third of the price, I'll be happy.

One suggestion of vacuuming out the filter: Unless your vacuum has HEPA filtration, you should probably vacuum out the filter in a different location than where the unit is being used, otherwise you will just remove the stuff that the HEPA filter caught and blow it back into the room through the vacuum.

I purchased this Air Purifier (Honeywell HHT-011) and received it about a week ago and give Amazon.com kudos for prompt and safe delivery. I chose this model because of all the glowing reviews that others have posted.

I as well as my MUCH better half both smoke and for the last several years have smoked outside of the house. We both became a year older this year and decided that going outside to smoke to keep the newly painted home fresh smelling was unrealistic and picked a small 5 x 8 foot room with 8 foot ceiling to smoke in thinking it would not be difficult to wash and paint this small room when necessary and even went to the bother of installing a ceiling exhaust fan in this room which is vented to the outside. Even with the exhaust fan there was always a residual odor of smoke in this room. We had previously used the Prozone PZ6 Indoor Air Purifier and were very happy with it, and in fact it lasted over five years before just wearing out from use and we should have replaced it with a like model.

That said, we purchased the Honeywell to remove the smoke odor from this small room, left it running 24 hours a day with the ion filter switched on as directed in the instructions and it just is not doing the job. We had great expectations and with the permanent HEPA Filter we thought we made a wise purchase. This Air Purifier even through it is larger than the Prozone PZ6 and with two filters plus the ion filter just does not perform well in this small room and I can imagine how ineffective it would be in a larger room.

Save your money folks and purchase something else....I believe we will be shopping for the Prozone PZ6 before next winter. I have never given such a negative review and am reluctant to do so but if it were possible to give a negative review I would so award this product. Since I have used it in a smoke filled room (just two smokers and we only smoke about once every three hours) I do not believe I can return it for a credit.

My advice is for you to SAVE YOUR MONEY and look elsewhere.

Customer Review: Honeywell HHT-011... A good buy.

This is a great little air cleaner. It is intended for use of one medium to large room. It is Not effective for the whole house. The compact size and design allows for this unit to fit on a desktop or dresser.

My wife and I both smoke, and it helps to keep the room clear of the lingering stink from cigarettes. It doesn't eliminate the odors as quickly as I'd like, but after returning home after being away for an hour or so, there is no hint of stale smoke in the house.

I bought a second one for the bedroom. She likes the gentle 'whizz' sound from the fan to help her Tinnitus(the ringing, buzzing, crackling, or hissing sound heard inside one or both ears).
It has also helped eliminate the morning time stuffy nose and watering eyes that we both frequently experienced. We wake up breathing better and more rested.

The cleaner has a 3 speed fan with a separate switch for the ionizer. We keep the ionizer on all the time, and the fan speed on Medium setting most of the time during the day. Low is good during sleeping, and High during periods of cooking or when we need a little boost of cleaner air.

Some have complained about the noise of the fan. It really isn't very noticeable after several minutes of use on the Low and Medium settings. It kinda blends into the surroundings and completely out of mind.

It has a pre-filter . . . A cleanable foam filter to catch larger contaminants.
It has a HEPA filter ... A cleanable filter to catch smallest of contaminants and allergens.
It has a Ionizer . . . An electronic device to trap airborne particles and more efficiently clean the air.

This is an excellent choice if you need an air cleaner for a single room, or a couple of smaller adjacent rooms, especially considering it has a permanent(cleanable) HEPA filter as opposed to the type that have to be replaced a couple times a year. [NOTE]: Do Not wet wash the HEPA filter. It should be vacuumed clean or use pressurized air to back-blow the trapped material away from the filter.

Customer Review: Bad quality or bad luck? Consider my review.

I initially bought this honeywell air purifier for my bedroom to remove dust and to reduce odors. But I had to return it twice because it was defective.

Pros:
-Saves you money, it's the only air purifier with a permanent filter that you can just vacuum to clean.
-Noise is acceptable on low, for the price.

Cons:
-Serious quality issues. It's seemingly a gamble if you're going to get a working one, i had to return it TWICE!:

1. The first unit I received had a faceplate that was warped and did not stay on. I don't think it would filter with the faceplate half on, so had to send it back for a replacement.

2. The replacement unit faceplate was normal but the ionizer made a static clicking noise when turned on. I called their customer support and they told me that is not normal and I need to get it replaced. Note: the first unit did not do this.

- Under normal conditions it didn't seem to work that well. After running it for 12 hours on high, then 12 on low, it did not completely remove odors in my bedroom and the Ionizer was only slightly noticeable.

-For people who need it to be almost silent on low, this isn't going to work for you. I could sleep with it on but the noise was noticeable. On medium to high, like one reviewer said, you're going to have to turn the tv up!

Conclusion:
The greatest strength of this purifier is that you don't have to buy replacement filters. But I got two defective ones in a row so I have to strongly suggest you look at other purifiers or another brand.

Side note: Amazon.com was awesome about replacing it and refunding it, when a product is defective they give you a label to print out and you just put it back in the box and drop it at your local post office to return it for a full refund or replacement. I've always had a good experience with amazon they go above and beyond to keep the customer happy. Still this thing wasted a lot of my time returning it, so think twice.

Customer Review: Great purchase - want to get one for each room in the house!
Summary: 5 Stars

For the price, this Honeywell air purifier was a fantastic deal for me. I have terrible allergies and I often wake up with my eyes crusted over, my nose congested, and my throat raw. The morning after I started up this baby, I had no gunky eyes, no congestion, and my throat felt great. I just got out of bed and I felt "clean" - no longer burdened by allergies (of course, once I left my room that all changed).

Maintenance

Other reviewers noted that this is a "HEPA-type" filter, not a true HEPA filter, but it seemed to work for me just fine. And I LOVE that there is no replacement filters to hunt for or any other parts to deal with. One small complaint is that the power cord is relatively short for my room, but an extension cord did the trick. For set-up, I just took off the plastic, plugged in the machine, and it worked. Best of all, it's lightweight and compact, so I can put it anywhere.

Noise

One issue I have is that the noise from the purifier's fan can be distracting. Funny enough, I actually find the highest setting (of three) to be the most tolerable noise-wise. Unlike the lower two levels, I feel the sound at the top mode is more constant and blends into white noise, to the point that I barely notice it anymore.

Smell

Odor is a final point for me. The smell is not unbearable and it is diluted as it moves through the room, but especially if I'm close to the fan, I notice an odd fragrance, perhaps like a hospital. This odor becomes even more distinct if you turn on the ionizer. Maybe some people like air to smell this way? Personally, I keep the purifier a comfortable distance from me and I'm fine.

Conclusion

As an allergy sufferer, I felt like buying this was money well spent (it's actually humming away as I type this). Perhaps there are other purifiers that have more bells & whistles, but for my purposes, this one was perfectly sufficient. Overall, I'm satisfied.
