Tools and Hardware Reviews of Honeywell HW2000i 2,100 Watt 125cc 4-Stroke Gas Powered Portable Inverter Generator (CARB Compliant)Customer Review: Make Lemonade Summary: 1 Stars
Well, I never did get around to writing a review of this item, but I guess now is the time...
First of all, I see that the price went up from the $499 I paid, to now over $700. No way should anyone pay that. 500 I can see, but at 700 it's close enough that you might as well pony up another hundred or two and buy a Honda.
I bought mine in Sept. 09. It lasted 20 hours and then it would start to throttle up, and then the overload light would come on and it would throttle back down. Then it would just repeat that endlessly. They had me take it to a repair shop. 9 days later, the shop called and said come pick up the new replacement.
The second one lasted about 50 hours, then it just throttled up to screaming chainsaw Warp 9.9 "Captain, She's gonna blow" rpm and stayed there. Took it back to the shop and the guy said he doesn't do Honeywell anymore. Went to the next shop on the list. There was some problem with the shop owner, so Honeywell shipped the next one directly to me.
Number Three was the newer 2010 model without the 12v electrics and no primer bulb. It was hard to start. I ran it a couple of times and each time it took over 40 pulls on the cord (once 120 pulls) for it to start. I could smell gas, so I thought it might be flooding. I took it to the third shop on the list. I never heard back from them, so after a few weeks I called and they said that it was fixed, come pick it up. So I went there and asked what the problem was, and they said it was a dirty carb from dirty gas. No way. There is a particle filter in the gas tank, and a fuel filter in the line, and it had been filled every time with fresh pump gas. Had to be BS. I told them I wanted to see it run. It wouldn't start. The shop guy gave up.
After it sat about 10 minutes, the assistant showed up and the boss said, "I though you fixed this thing?". The assistant said he did. So he tried. He pulled on the rope and it started first pull. Well all looked at each other and said, "flooded". The shop offered to try to get a replacement sent out, but I decided to take it home because once it was running, it ran and worked great. I finally worked out a system of yank the rope 40 times, then go cool off for 10 minutes, then come back and it would start in a couple pulls.
After I had run maybe 15 full tanks of gas through it, the starter rope was noticeably worn. I decided to ask them to send me a replacement rope. I went to the HW site to get the number to call, and it's now a Generac web site. I called the number and got HW support. They told me that they didn't have just a rope, so they'd send me the whole recoil starter assembly, no charge under warranty. I asked about the Generac web site, and was told that Generac had taken over Northshore on 3/7/11. Next day, they called me back and said no parts were available, and that Generac was going to call me.
Four days later, Generac called me, and said that they were waiting for all the inventory of parts and generators to get handed over to them from Northshore, and in the meantime, they had nothing to send me - so they were going to just send me a new Generac ix2000 instead. They didn't want the HW back.
10 days later, I still hadn't heard anything, but I went to use the gen and the rope broke. It was shredded deep down inside, and broke there instead of at the minor wear I could see by the handle. So I called Generac again. The CSR said they were unable to send me an ix2000 since it's a 49 state gen and I live in Ca. They had kicked it upstairs for a policy decision and hadn't heard back yet. They would check and get back to me. A couple hours later, I got a call back and was told that if I had my original receipt, they would issue a refund. I did have it (email from Amazon) so I sent it to them and got a call back after a few minutes saying the refund was approved.
About a week and a half later (yesterday) the refund arrived.
I just ordered a little Champion 42431 directly from Champion (Champion tells me that the 42433 sold here on Amazon is the identical generator, it's just a different stock number). Champion has an EXCELLENT reputation on the RV forums. I still have the HW2000i, so I think I'll tear it down and put a new rope on it and maybe a chainsaw primer and see if I can figure out what exactly is wrong with it. It does run and work great, so if I can fix the hard start problem it's still a pretty good generator.
In case anyone is interested, the HW inverter gens are made by YONGKANG XINGGUANG MANUFACTURE CO., LTD (that's what the sticker on the back of mine says). You can search the net and find that they make a BUNCH of different inverter gens.
Also, Generac told me that they intend to continue to market and support this product under the Honeywell brand name. EDIT: However, looking at the new Honeywell site, what I see is a different Chinese generator. The one on the HW site now is made by Suzhou Tiger Power Equipment and looks to be the same as the Generac ix2000 but in a white case.
So my opinion? The Honeywell is a great generator if you get lucky and don't get a lemon. Unfortunately, it seems like 90% of them are lemons. I wish you luck. You're gonna need it.
