Tools and Hardware Reviews of Honeywell HZ-315 Quick Heat Ceramic Heater

Customer Review: Ideal 1-room heater
Summary: 4 Stars

This little heater is perfect if you need to heat a room on a cold night. When winter rolled around I knew I needed a heater in the bedroom to stand the cold without making the gas bill skyrocket by heating the entire house. My bedroom is VERY large, so I was a little skeptical when I pulled out this tiny little heater, but it was only about $20-$25 so I tried it out. In about an hour my bedroom was nice and toasty, and I didn't have to worry about it getting too hot because the heater shuts off periodically depending on the setting you place it on. After that I used it every night through the winter and sometimes autumn without fail, and it's still going strong for me 4 years later. I don't understand why there are people complaining about this heater not heating their entire house (That's not its function! Use your thermostat!) or that they can't make it run nonstop (that's dangerous), although it practically runs nonstop on the highest level settings.

The only complaints that are reasonable (and the reason I didn't give it a full 5 stars) are the ones that say:
1) It's noisy. Yes, it is pretty loud when you first turn it on, and might wake you if you're a really light sleeper when it turns on again during the night. For the most part if you are already asleep I think you'll sleep through it. You'll notice when it turns on and off again if you're awake, but it doesn't take long to tune the sound out, unless you put it on a low lvl setting (which seems to turn it on and off more frequently).
2) There is no "Off" switch. I took the advice of someone who said just "Turn it all the way down" and when I did that I noticed it never came on when I was at home, but my husband is a pit more paranoid than me and feels the need to unplug it when we leave for work.
3) There is not a lot of space between the base and heating grill, which can get hot if you're running it on a high setting. I put it on a little stool or table to keep it off the thick carpet, and that seems to work fine as well as making me warm more quickly.

I believe the people who have had bad experiences with it breaking, but I can honestly say that I have had no problems with it even though I use it daily during the winter, and it has saved me a bundle in gas bills. Definitely worth the buy if you're looking for an inexpensive and efficient little heater.

Customer Review: Nice little heater!
Summary: 4 Stars

This review is a little late, I bought my Honeywell HZ-315 6 years ago in 2004, and it still works fine. I only use it occasionally during winter to warm up my office cubicle or a small room at home.

Some details (printed on box) missing from the Amazon description:
- 1500W
- Don't use in bathroom, laundry or any other wet areas.
- Keep combustible materials at least 3 ft. away from the heater.
- Adjustable thermostat maintains desired room temperature.
- Use only in polarized receptacles.

The plastic housing on my heater has always remained cool, only the metal grill gets hot. The dial controls a thermostat that turns the unit on and off by itself (For example, in the middle setting the heater is on for about a minute and then off several minutes. Depends on your room's temperature). The dial has no number markings, so I have no idea what is the temperature. Turn the dial to "super" for max power and to keep the heater on (a safety feature, it turns off when it overheats), but that probably will affect your electric bill. I only use the max. setting at work, where I don't pay the electrical bill, ha-ha.

I should mention one incident when I was using a power strip with many other devices plugged together, and the heater in the max. setting. After a few minutes everything turned off. I thought that either a fuse or the heater had burned out. But after testing each device I found that the surge protector of the power strip had burned. So now I always plug the heater to electrical outlets by itself.

Regarding use in a bathroom or wet areas, I think the device should be safe to use if you have ground fault circuit interrupter (GFCI) outlets. But I think the real problem is perhaps that moisture might accumulate inside the heater and cause rusting.

I have not experienced any of the problems mentioned in other reviews, perhaps the devices manufactured in more recent years are not as reliable.

Customer Review: Not perfect but gets the job done
Summary: 4 Stars

I've had this heater for about 2 months now. Some pros and cons;

Pro: It heats my (somewhat small) room very quickly. There is no odor and the sound is tolerable, like a weak blow dryer. It can make it hard to hear the tv but it's not nail-in-the-chalkboard distracting or anything like that. I could personally sleep through the noise, not loud at all.

Cons: As other people have mentioned the dial dosen't have temps on it and no off button (so you have to pull the plug). My biggest complaint would be that after working fine for a few weeks it suddenly had a minor problem. The problem is after the initial gust of warm air (which works perfectly) the second, third and so on gust has a hard time coming on. Like it turns on then quickly turns off then turns on then quickly turns off then finally it turns on. Almost like it's short-circuiting or something. To be clear this is not a fatal flaw or a serious problem but it is extremely distracting. It's so distracting that I now just turn it on full blast, get the room warm then just take the plug out of the outlet. I find it easier to just manually do this instead of relying on the heater's temperature control. Hope that made sense.

Final Verdict: I'm very happy with the heater despite its flaws and it rescued me from a very cold winter. My advice would be if you just want a cheap heater that will warm your room and you're not super-picky about the temp control or lack of off-button or some other minor flaws then buy this heater.

UPDATE: My heater is barely working now, it's been about a year since I bought it. I don't know if anyone else has this problem but I wouldn't count on this heater to last beyond one winter.

Customer Review: Dependable heater for personal use
Summary: 4 Stars

I got this for my cubicle because my office is always underheated in winter and overcooled in summer. I've had it for about 2 years now and it's proven reliable. I will qualify my use, though: I only use it when I'm cold, so it's not on all day every day; I turn it off every time I leave my desk when I do use it; I rarely leave it on full-blast.

Up close, it produces hot air easily sufficient to keep your upper body and hands warm (I have it on my side desk aiming at me). The only time to fan and heat stay on indefinitely is if you turn it up to max. Any lower, and the unit cycles on and off. At first this annoyed me, but it actually allows you to cool down a bit if you are using it in close proximity (it's about a foot away from me).

It seems pretty safe. I have it about two inches away from my computer and my note pad, and I use an industrial extension cord (the only practical way). The unit itself gets hot but won't burn you if you accidentally touch it, and the heat on non-blowing surfaces does not transmit far.

It's not overly loud, but it is the sound of a fan blowing, like in your car. Quiet enough not to annoy coworkers in neighboring cubes (at least I hope), but they will know there's a fan blowing nearby.

So, I have found this to be very useful and dependable, but just keep in mind it's a small unit best, really, only for up-close personal use. In that, I have no complaints about this unit.

Customer Review: Morning Delight on a Cold Winter's Day
Summary: 5 Stars

C'mere, baby. Put me right there. Yeah, that's it. Now plug me in. Oooo you can fell my warmth right away, can't you, baby? Turn it up a little...my button's right there. Higher. Higher. Yes. Yes. Yes!

Yep, that's me and my Honeywell HZ-315 Quick Heat Ceramic Heater almost every day this winter. After I get my Honeywell started, I take a nice hot shower. She waits for me in the bathroom in a safe place away from the water; she hates water. She'd fry me if I got her...um...wet.

Truth be told, it is indeed my bathroom exclusively where I like to use the Honeywell HZ-315 Quick Heat Ceramic Heater. And she lives up to her name: "Quick Heat." I have a pretty big bathroom, but the house's heating rails are on one side of the bathroom, and the shower and the "his" sink/vanity are on the other. So it gets a wee bit chilly on my side of the bathroom in the mornings. Not a problem anymore.

I just get the Honeywell HZ-315 going before my shower, and she takes goooood care of me when I get out. Seriously though...keep her where she won't get wet and don't forget to shut her down immediately after use, and she won't burn ya.

I always unplug too as soon as I'm done. She cools down immediately, in fact she never gets too hot while in use...well, maybe the front a little bit.

So don't you wish you were hot like me? You know you want it now. Put this Honey in your cart.
