Tools and Hardware Reviews of Honeywell HZ-315 Quick Heat Ceramic Heater

Customer Review: 3 Honeywells, 3 horrible experiences
Summary: 1 Stars

This heater was the best of my 3 experiences with Honeywell. The heater actually worked for almost a year before dying. Below is my review of my Honeywell experiences:

Honeywell HZ2800BW Turbo Heater Fan
Enough is enough. I bought this heater and it failed within two weeks. When it fails, the light will come on but neither the heating element or the fan will work. Thankfully Amazon is awesome at returning products and they had another one in the mail before I even put this one in the mail to ship it back. The new one arrived and it ran for about a month before stopping. When it failed it failed in the same way as the first one. Since it was Spring, I just threw it away and took the loss.

Convinced that it must have just been a defective model of Honeywell, I ordered the HZ-315 Quick Heat Ceramic Heater. This one actually worked for almost one whole year before dying last night in the exact way the other two did. The moral to the story is this: Honeywell heaters are garbage. Unfortunately, I begin this whole Honeywell nightmare only after my Holmes heater died after 5+ years of it running night and day during the winter. SPEND THE EXTRA FEW DOLLARS AND BUY QUALITY WHICH IS NOT HONEYWELL.

Customer Review: A Ceramic Heater that Actually WORKS! (see review, though)
Summary: 4 Stars

I have 3 of the Honeywell HZ-315 heaters; one has been used daily for 3 fall/winter/spring seasons, and the other 2 for one fall/winter (so far) in Colorado. All have performed perfectly.

*** UPDATE (March 2009): One of these heaters that I bought in early fall 2008 lasted through fall and almost all of winter, but crapped-out in early March. It must have a defective component because it now shuts down after only a few seconds running - and at any setting. So, my 4 star rating is now only 3 (but Amazon won't let me change it!). Assuming I just happened to get one defective unit I will replace it with another HZ-315. Yes, I like this heater enough to take a chance on another one! ***

Pros: Inexpensive, efficient, reliable, compact, simple design, 1500 watts of heat.

Cons (minor): No handle to grab to move it around, and heat control dial is on the lower front of the unit - an inconvenient location.

The BEST thing about this model ceramic heater is that it has a serious ~5-inch fan in the back that draws air through the heating element and literally PUSHES it out the front, which makes it VERY efficient! It heats a small bedroom pretty fast and it's just perfect for a home office.

Customer Review: Thermostat limits performance near room temperature
Summary: 3 Stars

The Honeywell HZ-315 Quick Heat Ceramic Heater is typical for products in its class. It consists of a heating element, a fan and a thermostat in a plastic housing (metal grill).
Because it relies on a fan, it's fairly noisy, enough to be distracting if you're listening to music or other entertainment. It's a fairly "clean" white noise, not rattly.
The thermostat doesn't go up high enough, so the unit may shut off before you're ready.
The unit is compact: 7.5" high, 6.5" wide and about 6.5" deep not allowing for placement clearance.
I was able to operate the unit in a variety of positions, meaning the unit can run tipped over, though it seems to be stable and well balanced.
The advertising on the box says: "Quick Heat, Heats you warmer, faster*". The * refers to "Honeywell Test #SM-0102". Google and the Honeywell web site have yet to learn about SM-0102, so the question remains: Warmer, faster that WHAT?
Overall conclusion: This unit is much nicer than the noisy old coil heaters I grew up with. I would give the unit another star if the thermostat range went up 10F. I find KAZ's hype and lack of information annoying - Just give me the facts, please!

Customer Review: less than expected
Summary: 3 Stars

i lower my rating if it were allowed to ONE STAR!!!

i bght these (5 of them) to set by pipes during winter to keep them from freezing. this based on the ad saying they had a frost setting. when they arrived the manual said the frost setting came on at 74degrees ! well i never heard ever of any frost happening at 74 degrees. i called the company and they were inept...had not a clue and tried to give some song and dance skirting the issue. forget their customer service being any help.

so i tried an imperical study...wait til the thermometer came to 'frost temps' i set the thing out on the deck at 32, then 30, the 28 while on the frost setting...it never came on.

as for using it otherwise, i was quite disappointed in the heat output. the fan blowing diluted the heat. radiant would have been better than forced with such a high volume fan. i kept the heater by my desk, about 4 feet away and was still cold, mainly due to the fan's action.

all in all i would say these certainly to me are near to being useless as a heater and as a frost heater.

Customer Review: A Gamble - Maybe Great, Maybe Junk
Summary: 3 Stars

The first one of these that I bought was absolutely wonderful... Just like the great reviews listed. When it stopped working (after about 2 winters), of course I bought another just like it. Second one I bought put out more heat, but stopped working after about 2 minutes and wouldn't come back on except after unplugging and cooling. I thought it was a fluke, so I bought two more (great price, small, safe and cute). One sort of works, but barely puts out any heat. The other one is like the second... Works for a few minutes and then shuts off. The three that I have now just don't do it for me (sadly). I'm going to purchase another space heater for this winter, but not this Model. :-( My summary:
Appearance: 5 star
Compactness: 5 star
Safety Rate: 4 star (Front can get a little hot, but pretty safe)
Economical: 5 star (Low price to buy & low cost to operate)
Reliablity: 1 star (They lost me here. I am so sad. Wish they all worked
like the first one I bought...sigh.)
