Tools and Hardware Reviews of Honeywell HZ-709 7 Fin Oil Filled Radiator Heater with Digital Controls

Customer Review: don't waste your time and money
Summary: 1 Stars

This is the third heater I've purchased in the last month. The first 2 were Lasko oscilating fans for "medium" sized rooms and they did not do the trick in our 85 year old home with a large living room and dining room. I didn't expect much from those considering they were under $40. So I took each back and kept seeing this heater and it was said to be used in "large" rooms. Finally, i thought, this is perfect! It was the last one so I figured it must be good!
I got it home very excited to get warm again! I plugged it in and kept in mind the booklet said it could take 20 minutes to really warm up. It's been 5 hours and although the heater is hot to the touch, hot enough that if you actually touched the metal you would get a pretty bad burn! I set the temp on the highest setting (which was 85). The room temp according to the heater was 70 and its only at 72! That's not even close to 85! 85 might seem a ridiculous temp but this room is quite large.
Although it is very easy to set up and the digital reading is a plus, the fact that is is so large and gets so insanely hot and does not even perform the task of warming my living room I don't recommend this product. It was twice the price of the other smaller heaters and they did much better than this! I will be returning this as it is definitly not safe to have my 1 year old son around or my cat. At least the others put off more heat than this for a cheaper price and could be moved up high so the cat and child could not get hurt.

I am very disappointed!

Honeywell HZ-709 7 Fin Oil Filled Radiator Heater with Digital Controls

Purchased the HZ-709 last winter because my (much older 6 year old digital controlled Honeywell) stopped working on the low setting. Used it dutifully about 10 hours a day (in winter) for all that time. Since that one easily paid for itself in its first month anyway... I have only GREAT things to saw about both the older and newer HZ-709. Easy to use (didn't have to dig the manual out to figure how it functioned last winter).

Improvements with the HZ-709: 3 settings instead of 2, a pull handle for easier mobility when needed. All the other nice features are listed in the product description. I use the HZ-709 on the lowest setting in a 16x16 room. I have a Kill-A-Watt to check the wattage on all 3 level settings and low was about 300 watts if I remember correctly. PERFECT!!!. I love the "oil filled radiator heater" type since there are no exposed heating elements. After a moment or two of the oil warming up, it is dead quiet otherwise (the oil normally crackles slightly when warming up). I additionally place a small 4" fan several feet away to help disperse the warm if I utilize it in a larger room. My heating bills are cut in half since I only reside in 1 or 2 rooms after work in the winter months.

Imagine my joy when I noticed there were two units (a box and) in stock at a local store left over from last year. I purchased one for my mother and an using the second unit downstairs. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

Customer Review: Brand new and never warms above 63 degrees
Summary: 1 Stars

I purchased this heater to replace my Dehlongi radiator heater that didn't fail me for seven years. It cost more than I wanted to spend, but I liked the features, and expected this to warm my living room just the same, probably better, than my old Dehlongi did. I got it less than one week ago, brand new, and this heater does not heat above 63 degrees, and that's if I'm lucky. I've only seen it go above 61 degrees one time. My home heats with propane, and with the subzero weather here, I wanted to run up my electricity than breeze through my propane faster. This heater is more than a disappointment. It's costing me more money to run than it is saving me because I keep my home thermostat at 60 to save the propane. I have this heater set on the highest running power ($$), and set the thermostat to 85 (the highest it goes), and yet after five hours, the heater is STILL at 61 degrees. I wish my Dehlongi didn't die after seven years! At least that heated the room in about twenty minutes and could be turned off and still keep warm for another hour or so. This Honeywell heater is a joke.

Customer Review: Unit is leaking oil on my carpet! Not what I expected at all.
Summary: 1 Stars

Like many others here, I purchased this at Target on sale. I have not been happy with the Honeywell HZ-709 7 Fin Oil Filled Radiator Heater at all.

First off, when you turn it on it makes a lot of dripping and crackling sounds as the oil heats up. I used it in an office so that didn't matter to me, but it might matter to you.

Second, it was not consistent in keeping the room a comfortable temperature. Sometimes a setting of 70 would be very warm and other times it would be cold.

Third, it kept blowing the "breaker" in my surge protector. It didn't blow the circuit breaker, just the surge protector. When this would happen, I would come in to a cold office and have to reset the surge protector and wait for it to heat the room back up again.

Fourth, it takes a long time to heat a room with this type of heater.

Fifth - and the final straw. It has started leaking oil, on my carpet. Great. I have put a thick piece of cardboard under it and am going to buy a ceramic or quartz heater tomorrow.

Customer Review: Great Quality heater without the smell!
Summary: 5 Stars

I purchased two of these units after having tried several different types of heaters, including the the delonghi comfort temp oil filled heater. First of all, I will say that I had to return the delonghi because it smelled of the oil so bad that my girlfriend complained that it gave her headaches! I am pleased to say though, that these Honeywell heaters gave off no oil smell, and after heating up, were quite warm and got our average sized rooms to a comfortable temp.

One thing that I will mention though is that these heaters took a little while longer to heat up than the delonghi, however, I would attribute this to the fact that the Honeywell seems to contain more oil inside of it than the delonghi. Upon heating up though, the heater pumps out some good heat.

I would recomend this product as a small to medium sized room heater, and as a supplemental heater for a large sized room. With the temperature here hovering below freezing, the gas fireplace and this heater worked nicely together.
