Tools and Hardware Reviews of Honeywell HZ-7200 Cool Touch Oscillating Heater w/ Smart Energy Digital Control PlusCustomer Review: Great Little Heater Summary: 4 Stars
I bought this little heater for my 17 month olds room, so being concerned for my curious toddlers safety and comfort (especially as I start to think about a toddler bed for him) I did a lot of research into which space heater to purchase. This is the only easy to come by and inexpensive space heater that I was able to find that had all of the features I was looking for. Here are the reasons I chose this space heater:
1. Auto tip over off (cause toddlers never knock things over, right?)
2. Over heat protection (modern space heaters are much safer then the old oil ones I grew up with, but this is a an excellent safe guard against fire hazard)
3. Cool to the touch (entire unit, not just side casing. a lot of units advertise cool to the touch casings, but the grilling still gets very hot. this also reduces fire risk from things that get too close)
4. The grates that let the heat out are close together (I checked to make sure my little guys fingers wouldn't fit. this also makes it harder for things to get jammed into it and catch fire. Somethings, like chocolate coins :P, still fit. but it's a smaller subset of things that will fit in).
5. Auto thermostat with programmable temperatures
6. Stable base
7. Grates are up a ways off the carpet, so that I can put it on the floor instead of worrying about having to find a safe, big enough surface to put it on (which my toddler would inevitably pull it off of and onto his head)
8. Relatively small (his room is tiny)
9. Packs enough heat but doesn't broil you out of the room (again his room is tiny, I'm not sure how this heater would do for bigger rooms. But the bigger heater I had in his room before was just too powerful for his little room).
10. Relatively quite (it makes some noise, but with his usual white noise - mild radio static - in the background, my 17 month old has no problem falling asleep with it periodically cycling on and off).
11. Inexpensive (I bought mine at Walmart for $35).
12. Energy efficient (shame on me as an environmental scientist, cause this actually wasn't high on my list, but it's nice to have the energy savings on our electricity bill)
13. Relatively easy to come by
14. Oscillation feature is a nice bonus
I noticed on one of the other reviews that the oscillation feature freaked their 18 month old out, so I was on the look out for it with my 17 month old too. The oscillation feature freaked the living daylights out of my little guy too, something about it just weirds toddlers out I guess. I can't use this feature yet really, but not a big deal for his tiny room. I would have him sit on my lap and I would pet the heater to show him it was ok, but he still cried :P. He is still nervous about it when it turns on even with out the oscillation on, but he's getting used to it. We also have to set it about 5 degrees higher than we want it actually to be, but it still works great. Like others have said in their reviews, it does come on just long enough to bring the room up to temperature and then only comes on for a few seconds about every 4-5 minutes. But it still keeps the room nice and warm. For those considering getting this or other space heaters for their childs nursery I would caution them to either be very diligently cautious or to wait until they are one year old due to SIDS risks associated with over heating. Great heater, I recommend!
