Tools and Hardware Reviews of Honeywell Long-Life Pure HEPA QuietCare Air Purifier, 17000Customer Review: HEPA vs. MOLD : An Inconclusive Study Summary: 4 Stars
Part I : HEPA vs. MOLD
We bought 3 of these Honeywell HEPA purifiers for a rental house that we are desperately trying to get out of. Because someone had the brilliant idea of installing a fallout shelter - that has since become a camel cricket habitat and occasional swimming pool - which is located beneath our sleeping quarters AND because it's had a decade-long a roof leak that no one has been able to effectively fix, perhaps an effect of building a house with an inaccessible attic, the house is chock full of mold.
Mold on the subfloor.
Mold spots appearing on interior walls.
Wet bricks on the chimney, and a strong mold odor coming from above.
Now we're sick. Myself and my children have not been well in a few months.
This is probably more info than anyone really wants, but I struggled to find a single review that addressed this purifier's ability to remove mold spores from the environment. The description says it does - so yes, in theory - but what about in practice?
I'd like to say that we have conclusively decided that the purifiers were solely what made our situation improve, but instead I'll take the less dramatic option of being honest.
Problem is: There are a lot of factors at play. One of them is the HEPA purifiers. The other is a two-month long dry spell that began precisely at the time we purchased the purifiers, which was preceded by two months of daily hard rain which started up our problems to begin with. And the last factor is that we stopped using the HVAC system, which probably (almost definitely) is jam-packed with mold. I shudder to think what might be in that 50-year old never-cleaned ductwork.
What I will say is that the mold smell - something which had become offensively strong - dramatically improved with hours, perhaps a day, of running our 3 small purifiers & 1 large purifier on high. Temper this with the fact that the carbon prefilters wear out within a month in terms of odor-fighting ability, and if not replaced, the whole system develops an odor all its own. The prefilters if you own many purifiers can be overwhelmingly expensive to replace frequently.
My health has also improved. By an improvement in health, I mean I no longer experience constant dizziness, facial pressure, jaw pain/shifting teeth, visual problems and intense fatigue. While I can't be sure the purifiers are responsible, I suspect they play a role in that. I suspect it strongly enough that we have continued to run them non-stop (save for vacuuming/filter cleaning) since we purchased them. Of course, I live in terror of becoming ill again, so if someone told me that performing voodoo on the mold would work, I'd probably do that too, so I feel it's only fair to add that my logical mind is not functioning at full capacity.
My family is still plagued by allergies - presumably to the mold spores in the air which are not being captured, or are not being captured quickly enough to not get lodged in our sinuses. However My kids still sneeze, cough at night sometimes, and complain of sore throats and shortly after it rains we all feel less well, but I do think we've all improved. Being plagued by allergies is preferable to feeling sure you're dying.
In conclusion, if you're stuck somewhere with mold temporarily, these purifiers seem like a reasonable first line of defense -- until you can relocate, and if you are able to shell out the money. There's the drawback. The expense to clean the air of an entire house is huge. Particularly if you try to clean the air in a 2000 sq. ft. house. We opted instead to close off rooms, and only clean about 1200 sq. ft.
Part II : OTHER DETAILS
The purifiers themselves are quite loud. Like a box fan in a window, they are pretty tolerable on the lowest setting - which is one we rarely use under the circumstances. Medium we can sleep with, but high I find to be a bit unnerving at night, although we do leave them on high during the day and deal with it.
Running the 4 purifiers on high is expensive. Our electric bill is comparable - just running the purifiers and doing normal household things - to a mid-summer bill when we were running the AC. Of course, since the HVAC is full of mold, we are not running the AC or heat - just the purifiers. This sort of surprised me.
The blue LED is stupid. It will illuminate a bedroom at night. If I had the energy to waste on it, I'd remove it, but instead I just put some of my kids' stickers on it. When the stickers peel up, I just replace them with new ones. Problem pretty much solved.
The installation of the filter is intuitive and straightforward. It's easy to access via the side of the purifier. We've had these at least a month, and the HEPA filter has yet to need vacuuming, based on appearance. The prefilters get fouled with dust buildup really quickly. A week maybe? So we have opted to clean them rather than replace them weekly to prevent having a petri dish wrapping the HEPA. Another note about the prefilter is that when they are clean they do a great job of controlling (non-tobacco) odors for the first month - maybe a bit more. They will start to smell like whatever offending odor you are trying to prevent if they become dirty, or are simply in need of replacing.
In regard to tobacco odors, they will also pick up that smell and trap it - you cannot get it out - as I noticed when I bought one with an already open box (tsk tsk, shame on me) from Home Depot. It reeked of cigarette smoke like a nasty wet ashtray - eww... we promptly returned it.
In a non-mold situation - ie. for typical allergies dust, pet dander - these purifiers would not be bothersome and would likely get the job done if they were to run non-stop on the low setting.
When we have turned them off for short periods of time, we have been compelled to turn them back on as our allergies do seem to get worse when they are not running. But I would advise someone with bad allergies and a house full of allergens to expect possible improvement but not a miracle.
Description of Honeywell Long-Life Pure HEPA QuietCare Air Purifier, 17000True HEPA filter removes 99.97 percent of all airborne particles from the air passing through the filter such as pollen, cat dander, household dust, tobacco some & mold spores This portable air cleaner is recommended for filtering the air in a closed room as large as 168 square feet (12 by 14 feet). As it continuously circulates a room's air--about six times per hour--it employs two filters to remove smoke, pollen, dust, animal dander, dust mites, molds, bacteria, viruses, and odors. Especially useful for asthmatics and allergy sufferers, the cleaner contains a true HEPA filter that is at least 99.97 percent effective at trapping extremely tiny particles (as small as 0.3 microns) while a prefilter reduces odors. Honeywell's IntelliCheck system permits monitoring the filters' lives. Each filter has a button. Pressing a button activates a light, which blinks or shines steadily. One blink indicates that the filter has lots of life remaining, two blinks means less life, three blinks means even less, and a steady light indicates the filter needs changing. The HEPA filter lasts one to three years; the prefilter, three months. Filter replacement is simple, and replacement filters can be ordered separately. The air cleaner has three speeds, and all are exceptionally quiet for an air cleaner this large and powerful. It carries a five-year warranty against defects. --Fred Brack
