Tools and Hardware Reviews of Honeywell RTH221B Basic Programmable ThermostatCustomer Review: It works but ... Summary: 3 StarsI called Honeywell to ensure that installation was correct. They confirmed that I did everything correctly. The unit still cycles the furnace frequently and causes the ambient temperature within the house to fluctuate 10 degrees F. It clicks on when 5 degrees below setting and turns off when 5 degrees above setting. I was hoping for a more regulated temperature. I am not using the air conditioning function as the home does not have central air installed.
Customer Review: Simple Summary: 5 StarsI replaced an old mercury thermostat for my baseboard heating. I had to do some research to find out that the wires needed to be connected to Rh and W (The old thermostat wasn't labeled, and the wires were not color coded). I think I will also connect my A/C wiring to this and remove it's old thermostat. The temperature control is accurate. This also has a manual shutoff switch.
One note: The room temp is normally displayed, but you can easily see the set temp:
"Pressing UP or DOWN once will display the setpoint temperature."
Customer Review: Honeywell Thermostat Summary: 3 StarsI've only had my unit for a few days, and I'm not as particular about a degree here or there in temp. difference because I have a 90 year old gravity furnace and it's never quite that exact. This was only meant to be a temporary solution for us until we buy a new HVAC system for the house in the next year or two. What I will say (and it looks like a few others have said this as well) is that the instructions are NOT HELPFUL for a two wire installation.
For two wire installation, you'll need to use the Rh and the W terminals on the right side of the wall mounted unit. Be prepared with an assortment of small sized flathead screw drivers because the Rh screw is more tightly fastened than the rest because of it's jumper connection. Beyond the frustration of trying to figure out which wire went where, and making sure I had the right sized screwdriver, the unit is fine. It works as it is programmed to and should help save me some money until I get a new system.
Customer Review: Avoid this thermostat Summary: 2 StarsThis thermostat is more accurate than our old mercury switch but is has its problems.
The thermometer is off by several degrees, no big deal, just place an accurate thermometer next to the thermostat and make the necessary adjustments right? Wrong! The difference between the actual temperature and the readout on the thermostat fluctuate daily. Slightly irritating.
The main problem is that this thing has a mind of its own at night. Sometimes it will decide to raise the temperature to 80 degrees when it was programmed to 72 degrees. NO FUN FOR A SLEEPY PERSON TO DEAL WITH. When this happens the only way to turn off the heat is to remove the thermostat from the wall. AGAIN, NO FUN FOR SLEEPY PEOPLE!!!
As soon as we find something better the old one will be smashed into a million bits and set afire!!
Customer Review: Very easy to install, very easy to use Summary: 5 StarsWe purchased this thermostat in an attempt to lower our winter heating bills. As someone who is very new to do-it-yourself home improvement, this thermostat was very easy to install, and the included directions were very clear... the only tool required is a screwdriver.
After install, we were a little worried about the seemingly super-sensitive heat sensor; just breathing directly on the thermostat (after it was installed on the wall) made the temperature immediately jump five or ten degrees. However, this turned out not to be a problem, as one tends to spend very little time next to the thermostat after the initial installation and setup. We did keep a regular mercury thermostat on the wall right next to it for a few days to ensure that the temperature readings were accurate, and we were pleased to find that they were... at most, the temperature differed by one degree.
The setup of the four states (wake, leave, return, and sleep) is extremely simple, and there's a prominent "hold" button if you want to have the manually override the settings. The only gripe I have is that, when running, it only shows the current temperature... it doesn't also show the value at which the heater (or AC, as the case may be) will turn on. This requires re-entering the "set" mode, which is a minor inconvenience.
All in all, this is a very good project for any homeowner, and is quite easy to install and set up.
