Tools and Hardware Reviews of Honeywell RTH221B Basic Programmable Thermostat

Customer Review: Best money I've spent in a long time
Summary: 5 Stars

I bought this thermostat this fall from a big box home improvement store and it's paid for itself several times over in a few short months (and I paid more than the listing price on Amazon).

I had never installed a thermostat before, but it was a breeze to install. I turned off the breakers to my living room, carefully removed the old thermostat, attached two wires, installed a couple of screws (I think that I ended up drilling one new hole), and turned the power back on. Less than 15 minutes from start to finish, and I'm not the handiest gal you'll ever meet. It worked. I set it to turn down at night while we're sleeping and during the day when we're gone. I also put the plastic on the windows, but other than the new thermostat I did nothing different this year than last.

February 2008- the portion of our utility bill for natural gas was $188.03. February 2009, with the average temperature just 4 degrees warmer, our natural gas bill was $88.08. We have saved at least $40 every month since I installed it. It's paid for itself several times over. It's probably the best thing I've purchased in a very long time.

Customer Review: It works.
Summary: 3 Stars

I bought 2 of these units. After letting them sit on the table next to each other for a while, they displayed different temperatures, by a difference of about 3 degrees. I was surprised they were that different. I considered sending them back, but instead I used them as they were. The temperature difference seems to have worked its self out and they do their job just fine. After using one of the Lux models a few years ago, I found myself wanting the extra features that it had (another mode for weekends). The display constantly shows the current temperature but unless you hit one of the up/down buttons, will not show you what the current thermostat temperature is set to. I found this annoying as my wife is constantly changing the temp on me and I would like to know what it is currently set at. The LUX model displayed both. If I had it to do over again I would have bought a different brand, probably Lux. Also, a horizontal model would have covered the round marking that my previous thermostat left.

Customer Review: Total JUNK
Summary: 1 Stars

My husband and I purchased 2 for cost saving purposes:

1. The directions read that it takes 15 minutes to install - it took us 5 hours and after installation, it didn't work properly so we had to contact an electrician who charged us $200.00. The electrician warned us as he installed both stating that he commonly has to assist customers who have purchased this same item from either Home Depot or Amazon. He said they typically have been faulty and they don't even make them anymore - NICE!

2. The thermostats are not accurate as far as the tempurature settings. We set ours on 72 and work up during the night sweating in which our separate home thermostate read 80. They are off completely.

3. The program doesn't run as programmed - on occasion, you manually have to run it.

After spending 8 hours dealing with these and $300.00 later - we are completetly frustrated and plan on returning both. Amazon should not sell faulty items that are obselete.

Customer Review: Honeywell Thermostat
Summary: 3 Stars

I've only had my unit for a few days, and I'm not as particular about a degree here or there in temp. difference because I have a 90 year old gravity furnace and it's never quite that exact. This was only meant to be a temporary solution for us until we buy a new HVAC system for the house in the next year or two. What I will say (and it looks like a few others have said this as well) is that the instructions are NOT HELPFUL for a two wire installation.

For two wire installation, you'll need to use the Rh and the W terminals on the right side of the wall mounted unit. Be prepared with an assortment of small sized flathead screw drivers because the Rh screw is more tightly fastened than the rest because of it's jumper connection. Beyond the frustration of trying to figure out which wire went where, and making sure I had the right sized screwdriver, the unit is fine. It works as it is programmed to and should help save me some money until I get a new system.

Customer Review: Great Upgrade from Old, Mercury-based Thermostat
Summary: 4 Stars

Installation - 4/5 - Incredibly easy. The wiring bracket is a really thin plastic that could break easy if too much pressure were to be applied. The directions were very clear and easy to follow. The wall mount is great; the thermostat sits off the wall only about an inch.

Programming - 4/5 - Incredibly easy. Basically there are four time slots during the day that can be programmed. The time slots are predefined by default, but you have complete control over the time slots and the running temperature during said time slot. This model does not show the programmed temperature on the main display, only the current ambient temperature which may cause some unnecessary adjustments.

Overall - 4/5 - This is a great upgrade from an old mercury based or broken thermostat. The programming options are sure to improve your electric bill from the moment installation is complete.
