Tools and Hardware Reviews of Honeywell RTH221B Basic Programmable Thermostat

Customer Review: Steve - Akron, OH
Summary: 4 Stars

When a retired county maintenance supervisor "friend" doing furnace work on the side told me I would have to spend $85 or more for a thermostat to replace the one that got fried by a wiring short, I went upstairs to my computer room and ordered this unit from Amazon for $21.61 plus $16.79 for next day delivery, and asked him to come back the next day to install it. Never saw the "friend" here again. This unit installs very easily and is perfect for a retiree who doesn't need a 5 day / 2 day programming capability. Works perfectly. Slight drawback: non-lighted display. No big problem.

Customer Review: Works great, til it stops
Summary: 1 Stars

We had one of these devices as our thermostat for about 2 1/2 years at which point it promptly stopped working. We could turn on the fan and it showed that it was getting battery power, but otherwise the display showed nothing (it all lit up fine upon battery insertion) and you could not change the heating program. I expect a product to last longer than it did. It's no longer in stock anywhere so I can order another (rental for 2-3 years) or install another one. It's not the end of the world, but it is a hassle.

Warranty is only 1 year.

Customer Review: OK thermostat for the price
Summary: 2 Stars

Thermostat is OK for the price. It programs easy, and seems to work fine. The reason for the two stars is that I ran across a scenario that worried me when programming the unit. I found that if I set the program and then manually adjusted the temperature, the "Heat" indicator on the display would be off, but the output relay would be On - causing heat demand - in fact heat demand that was uncontrolled. I tested this on two units and it happened on both. Pressing the "Run" button seems to kick it out of this mode, so I still use the thermostat.

Customer Review: Simple
Summary: 5 Stars

I replaced an old mercury thermostat for my baseboard heating. I had to do some research to find out that the wires needed to be connected to Rh and W (The old thermostat wasn't labeled, and the wires were not color coded). I think I will also connect my A/C wiring to this and remove it's old thermostat. The temperature control is accurate. This also has a manual shutoff switch.
One note: The room temp is normally displayed, but you can easily see the set temp:
"Pressing UP or DOWN once will display the setpoint temperature."

Customer Review: A simple thermostat
Summary: 5 Stars

This is one of the cheapest vertical size thermostat I can find. My old RiteTemp thermostat was on its last legs and I didn't want another touch screen. They just don't seem to last as long as a simple touch button thermostat. I have not used its programmable capabilities, I just put the settings on hold so that the temperature stays at the degree that I set it on. From the instructions it seems very simple to use and program if you wish to. Highly recommend for its easy installation. It literally took less than 10 mins to install.
