Customer Review: Easy to install, easy to program, a very simple way to save energy and money

I didn't buy this for the energy savings. I bought it because our old thermostat, which was already installed when we bought our house about 5 years ago, gave up the ghost. One day it was feeling very hot in the house and I went to go turn on the AC, and saw that the digital panel on the thermostat was blinking on and off, showing every function. I switched batteries, even tried resetting by shutting off the power, but no luck. Something had gone wrong and I didn't really want to call our AC technicians, who charge as much as this thing costs just to show up and diagnose a problem. So I ordered this here on Amazon and when it got here I read the instructions, which were quite clear, and had the thing installed in about half an hour. Turned the power back on, and everything worked like a charm.
The package comes with a set of little stickers that you can use to label the wires attached to your current thermostat, so that when you take it off you won't be confused. I like the fact that it's set up to install the wires into a mounting plate, but then you can take the body of the thermostat off of the mounting plate without disturbing the wires.
It's easy to program, and you can either follow a standard energy saving routine it has programmed in, or modify it to your own liking. You set it up with a weekday routine, and then you can set up individualized routines for Saturday and Sunday. For each day, you can set a temperature for while you sleep, after you wake up, when you leave the house, and when you get home until you go to bed. It's a nice step up from a standard non-programmable thermostat. I know in our case that we always think to ourselves we should turn off the AC when we're going to be out of the house for the day, but then we never think of it when we're on our way out of the house. This will help us to do what we'd like to do anyhow. It should be noted that the unit is set so that you can override the program any time by adjusting the target temperature manually with the up and down arrows on the unit. So, if you stay home sick and want to turn on the AC you can do it without reprogramming the device.
The only (minor) complaint I have is that there's a little quick reference card that is supposed to fit into a slot on the back of the thermostat, and with our package they included a reference card but it was the wrong size, probably for a different unit and it didn't fit the slot that came with this one. It's not a huge deal, since the instructions are pretty straightforward, and I can find the booklet if I have any troubles, but it would be nice to have them handy in case someone else in my household needs to make adjustments when I'm not around. UPDATE: as the comment below indicates, all I needed to do was fold the card and it fits fine.
I'm very happy with this purchase -- and, given what our AC costs amount to during summer months in Florida, I'm kicking myself that I didn't pick one of these up sooner. Easy to install, easy to use, definitely worth having.
