Tools and Hardware Reviews of Honeywell RTH6400D 5-1-1-Day Programmable ThermostatCustomer Review: An excellent programmable thermostat Summary: 5 Stars
This thermostat is a replacement for another Honeywell I had. I wanted one that has these features:
>Backlight
>Large Display
>Easy to Use and Program
>Temperature Stabilization
>Automatic Switch-Over
>Easy battery replacement
>Energy Star
The Honeywell RTH6400D has these features and all for a great price.
The backlight and large display makes it easy to read the display in our dark hallway. I was easy to program, actually used the pre-set settings which are Energy Star efficient. The temperature is maintained by it's logic, so that when you set it for 75 deg at 6:00am it will turn on before 6 to allow the house to reach the temperature. We do not get the temp fluctuations.
The auto switch-over feature is great because it will go from heating to cooling without you having to intervene.
2 AA batteries(not included) are inserted into an easy to remove battery holder from the rear. No need to remove any covers.
Installation was a snap on my existing wiring. It comes with wire labels. All you need is a small screwdriver to attach the wires.
This truly is a best deal because you can set it and forget it.
Customer Review: Simple to use Summary: 4 Stars
I'd give this product a five, but the instructions say to line up the wires with the colors, and if you do that, you won't get heat. For some reason, the Yellow wire goes in the "W" (for white) slot, and the directions don't tell you that. Had to have a heating guy come out and figure out what was wrong.
Other than that, it's simple to use, much moreso than the 7 day thermostat from Honeywell, which takes an engineer to program (that model's only advantage is that it automatically keeps track of Daylight savings time, and contrary to its advertising, it still requires a battery). Programming on this model consists literally of pushing the same button again and again to cycle through your programming, and you need only hit the up/down buttons to change time and temp. Couldn't be easier. I've ordered two more.
Also, ontrary to what one reviewer said, pushing the button at night to get the backlight to turn on does NOT change the setting. You have to hit the button twice to do that. Night viewing is easy to read.
Customer Review: Great Product from Great Company Summary: 5 Stars
I actually just purchased this item so I have yet to feel it's effects on my heating bill, but the quality of this item is great. I have setup a few of these in the past for employers that were not Honeywell and they did not feel like this. The construction is very nice and the "feel" of the buttons is also great. It doesn't feel like you are going to break the thing by touching it. Programming is super easy and seems very hard to screw up. There are lots of settings built in for just about every environment of heating/cooling. The installation was super easy for me as I only have a two wire system. But as soon as I hooked this up, I tested and turned the temp up and sure enough it kicked on. The nights are just starting to get a bit cooler so now is the time that I will begin to use this more. But, there is NO DOUBT in my mind that this is a money saver. I researched for months about these items and having some experience with other brands it what lead to me this Honeywell. I'm sure it will be in service for years to come.
Customer Review: Auto Changeover Makes This a Winner! Summary: 5 Stars
We have two heating/cooling systems, one for each level of the home. Last month I bought a Lux 1500 based on the excellent reviews it got from Consumer Reports and Amazon reviewers. However, it had one huge failing--no auto changeover! In my research I missed this because I thought every programmable thermostat had auto-changeover.
So, I set out to find a better unit, and came across the Honeywell 6400. Ordered it, installed it (15 minutes), set it up for auto-changeover, and I couldn't be happier. This thermostat is fantastic. And it tells you at a glance BOTH the actual temp and target temp for the room, something else the Lux doesn't do.
The only feature I can imagine wanting that this unit doesn't have is a vacation mode... but really, that's pretty easy to achieve by just switching to a manual heat or cool mode and setting the temp manually.
I have recommended this unit to several friends already, and at only $50, my experience is that it will easily pay for itself in a couple of months.
Customer Review: Easy to install, easy to use Summary: 5 Stars
I swapped out an old fashioned Honeywell non programmable mercury thermostat for this unit. It comes with simple easy to read instructions and although I'm certainly no expert at these types of installations, in no time the unit was up and running. It also comes with easy to read instructions to program it and after the first time it is quite self explanatory really. Also, it's affordably priced, it does not make any clicking noises when the heat turns on and off - a complaint I came across in reviews of more expensive models, and if you need to change the temperature in the night I found using the simple arrows up and down keys kept the light on long enough to read the screen and do what you have to do - the light was another common complaint. In fairness this is my first programmable thermostat, so if you're someone with experience of many different models, then maybe you could find fault in it? Personally I'm delighted with it and a month after installing it I have absolutely no complaints.
