Tools and Hardware Reviews of Honeywell RTH7600D Touchscreen 7-Day Programmable Thermostat

Customer Review: excellent choice
Summary: 5 Stars

I had put off buying one of these for a couple years because I thought it would be difficult to install.
That couldn't of been more wrong - It was a piece of cake to install.

Scheduling this was EASY.
For some stupid reason I read the instructions first thinking it would be difficult to schedule.
Not that they didn't make sense - it's just so easy to use the instructions are unnecessary.
You can set all days at once, pick specific days, or each day individually - just check the days you want to change.

Only thing to beware - if you just install it and don't change any settings you may be a bit warmer than you want to be.
But it is nice they have it pre-programmed.

Counter points to others claims...

1) Yes it clicks when it is turning on and off, but it is not that annoying - and the thermostat is in right here in the living room with us. My wife actually likes it so she knows when the air is coming on. If anything at all could be tagged as annoying, it is that the click sound is the same exact click sound my TV makes when turning on. So I turn to see who's turning on the TV, but it is just the air kicking in. Ha.

2) Back light - When I tap the thermostat to get the back light on it does not go into a menu that I have to back out of. It lights up and that's it. I have to hit schedule, etc. to then go into whatever mode I want to go into.

3) Having to constantly update the schedule - thermostat's cannot read minds. Over a few days you'll have to adjust the schedule to get it set to what you are comfortable with. It's easy ! Then it's set it and forget it.

Customer Review: Easy to program and use -- just as advertised
Summary: 5 Stars

I woke-up one Sunday morning to find the house colder than normal, only to learn that my house's original Honeywell thermostat had failed. Fortunately, it set itself into a default mode of 68-degrees, so replacing it immediately was not necessary.

I started my research online, looking for a replacement which had the programming features I wanted. I was a bit intrigued with this model and several other touchscreen cousins from Honeywell. The reviews were quite good; the quibbles voiced by others were not showstoppers for me.

It was VERY easy to install -- perhaps 15 minutes total time:
* Remove the old thermostat and old mounting plate
* Discover that the footprint was different than the old one
* Sand and paint the area; Wait for the paint to dry
* Drill holes, insert anchors, fasten new mounting plate
* Snap-on the new thermostat

PROS:
* Easily programmed (I did not use the manual, but I'm an engineer and gadget enthusiast)
* Can be programmed while disconnected from the wall. This is a plus in that you don't have to stand in your hallway with the manual in one hand and pushing buttons with the other.
* Touchscreen is innovative for a thermostat
* Knows when to turn-on to get the house to the temperature you specify at the time you specify; no need to guess how far in advance you need to set the thermostat to have the house ready at a certain time.

CONS:
* Clamshell packaging, which required the "jaws-of-life" to open
* Minor quibble -- Like others, I wish the backlight was always-on

Customer Review: Easy Install, Easy to Use
Summary: 4 Stars

I bought this thermostat to replace a non-touchscreen 5+1+1 Honeywell model that I had installed in 2005. The old unit was functioning fine, but only allowed one schedule for all weekdays and my wife and I both work jobs that give us days off during the week and some work on the weekend. This new unit's 7-day programming ability was the selling point for me. Now it is rare that we need to manually adjust the temp because it knows our schedule and is programmed accordingly.

Installation was a breeze. Disconnected the old wires and mine were connected to the right terminals for the colors. Installed the new baseplate without issue. I put the batteries in the unit and opted to sit at my desk and program it. To make this part easier, I had set up a schedule in Excel with the times and temps that we wanted. Once programmed, I put it on the wallplate and tested it out.

The controls seem user friendly. The only thing I see lacking on this unit is a vacation mode. My old thermostat could be programmed to hold a certain temperature for up to 14 days and then have the house comfortable for your return. I don't see any way to do that here. The only other thing I would change is something that has already been mentioned here. The backlight only turns on if you press a button. It would be nice if any touch on the screen would cause it to turn on. But this isn't terribly inconvenient - just touch either right corner and the screen comes on because there are buttons there. Overall though, an excellent unit that should help you save some money on your heating and cooling bills.

Customer Review: Might not save you money on heating and cooling bills
Summary: 3 Stars

We purchased two of these thermostats for our home. Easy to install, and the backlit display is nice. But the factory preset options might end up increasing, instead of decreasing your healing and cooling bills. I noticed that the unit was coming on 15-30 minutes before I had programmed it, something Honeywell terms, "smart recovery" to get the room to the temperature you want, by the time you want it. The problem is, the unit doesn't know how long it will take to reach the desired temperature, so the room may be sitting at the desired temperature 5-15 minutes before you actually need it to be at that temperature. Also, I discovered that our furnace was kicking on as much as 7-8 times an hour, even though the temperature reading on the thermostat never fell below what I had programmed it to be. For example, I had the temperature set to 66. If the room dropped from 66.5 to 66.25 the furnance would turn on to prevent it from ever going below 66. Well, I don't care if I have to wait for the temperature to drop to 65, I would rather not have my furnance coming on 8 times an hour and save some money. I called Honeywell on both these issues, and they walked me through the steps to turn off the "smart recovery" and decrease the "cycling" for both units. If you replace a basic, cheaper digital thermostat with this one, you will probably see your utility bills increase. Honeywell should have an "energy saver" mode that is a one click option on setup that disables these money wasting functions. If you buy this unit, call Honeywell as soon as you get it and have them show you how to disable them.

Customer Review: Wonderful product....
Summary: 5 Stars

Like most amazoners, I purchased this product based on the reviews and price here on amazon... In this case, I'm glad I did. This is an excellent product!!! Thanks to my "prime" membership, well worth the $79 for free 2-day shipping if you purchase a lot of stuff from amazon, my product arrived in 2-days.

Don't be discouraged by other peoples' review noting difficulty with programming/installation or the noise during operation. To tell you the truth, it was simple - it literally took 10 mins to pull the old thermastat off and replace with my nice new Honeywell. Another 5 mins to input my 7-day schedule and I'm off to eat dinner. I never even opened their literature for the installation or operation instructions - it's pretty self-explanatory...

MOST IMPORTANT STEP: Remember to use the stickers provided to label the wires when you take them off of the old thermastat - i.e. in my case, W sticker went on white wire, G sticker on green wire, RC went on red wire, and Y went on blue wire... Look at the label on the old thermastat by the screw when you remove the wire and place the corresponding sticker on it.

The only CON I've found in the first 15 mins of my new Honeywell experience Honeywell RTH7600B / RTH7600D Touchscreen 7-Day Programmable Thermostat - the backlight display as many have mentioned is goofy... Honeywell should consider placing a separate button to activate the light.
