Tools and Hardware Reviews of Honeywell Replacement Filter E (HC-14)Customer Review: Shop smart: Humidifier filter comparison Summary: 2 Stars
I have been usinf the Honeywell HCM6000 for the last four years, and tried out the various fileters. I live in the western/central US where the humidity is very low and where the water has LOTS of minerals, so I have the problem of "mineralization" of the filter. I have found that all of the filters suffer this problem at about the same rate. About every three weeks, I invert the filter (turn it upside dow) and about every 6-8 weeks, the filter has become stiff and lost much of its ability to hold and "wick" water, due to mineralization (the mineral is left behind after water evaporates). So, I use vinegar mixed with hot water to soak the filter (to "de-mineralize it) for a couple of hours, and use the hot vinegar-water to wash the tanks and the base of the humidifier. I have founr that a filter will last about 4-6 months (three cycles of de-mineralization/cleaning), regardless of the filter model (HC-14 or eHC-14) and price. I have noticed, however, that the eHC-14 does seem to prevent or suppress bacterial growth in the humidifier, BUT I wonder if I am breathing some of that "disinfectant." I have found the vinegar wash to work just fine with all the filters, and I believe that the HC-14 (at under $10 each) is a MUCH better buy!
