Tools and Hardware Reviews of Honeywell TH8110U1003 Vision Pro 8000 Digital ThermostatCustomer Review: A good choice as energy prices soar. Summary: 5 Stars
We had been thinking about installing a digital thermometer in our house for years, but ever-increasing energy costs finally forced a decision. We heat with propane and cool with electricity, so we pay high bills almost every month. We replaced a very conventional mercury bulb unit which seemed to cause the air conditioner or furnace to run incessantly, particularly in the afternoons.
I researched a lot of units before settling on this premium Honeywell unit. This is what I have found:
* Having 7 day individual programming is a necessity, not a luxury.
* Four period per day programming is extremely functional if you must be away during the day (or night).
* This unit can be pulled off the wall at any time and easily reprogrammed - a major plus.
* This unit faithfully maintains the temperature to within one degree.
* Comfort level is increased b/c temp swings are greatly reduced (old unit could swing as much as 6-7 degrees or more).
* This unit is a little hard to read because of the small, thin typeface used.
* Vacation setting (haven't used yet) easily overrides normal program w/o deleting it.
* easily set to manage both heat and A/C simultaneously, if desired, or independently.
* The current temp setting is easy to overide if you so desire.
* There is an audible click when the unit turns on the HVAC system.
* The unit is extremely easy to install (in spite of the fact that the paperwork says it should be installed by a professional) PROVIDED YOUR OLD THERMOSTAT HAS THE STANDARD CONNECTIONS AND THEY ARE MARKED ON THE UNIT.
* Installation caution: even though you are working with a low voltage system, it's still probably a good idea to turn off the power to the HVAC system by turning off the breaker in your electrical panel.
* My guess is that this unit will install easily in most homes that have just one single stage HVAC system.
We do not yet have enough experience with the unit to honestly compare our operating costs to previous years, but we will post the results when we do. This is certain: We now have a much greater degree of control over temp settings and we believe that our system doesn't run as much.
Customer Review: A little misleading on condition Summary: 3 Stars
I purchased the unit from a seller through Amazon (Amazon was not the actual seller). The item was listed as NEW however that was not the case. It was an open box item, it had been installed before as you can tell from inspecting the mounting holes where the threads had been cut into the plastic along with the packaging being opened. The included wall anchors were missing. The item appears to be working fine however when something is new....its supposed to be new. If it is in "like new" condition because it was installed and then the person decided they didn't want it then that is a different description and different price.
The product itself appears to be good. It is listed as a "professional install item" which means not all of the features are enabled. The documentation included gives you hints on some of the codes needed to enable everything however the one feature that I was wanting was disabled. Had to go through HoneyWell support to get the code and not before having to swear them out. They insisted that I call a professional to setup the code which was ridiculous since that would have cost more than the whole controller. They eventually relented and gave me the code (it took 15 seconds to enable). They need to control their distribution channels if they don't want homeowners to program the unit. Besides, my 11 year son could have enabled the feature it wasn't rocket science. So far the unit is working well. It is nice to have a unit that you just tough the screen and its back light comes on in the middle of the night if you need to make an adjustment. I would recommend it to others but be sure you look at the different versions of this unit because they don't all support all of the features that are listed in the generic documentation. I would rate the unit itself as a 4 out of 5 with it not getting a 5 because of Honeywell's support and lack of cooperation in giving me the instructions that I needed. I would rate the seller between a 2 and a 3 because he intentionally misled the condition of the product even though it appears to be working fine......thats just plain wrong.
Customer Review: Appropriate for Men - Excellent Thermostat Summary: 5 Stars
Of course, we all know that real men don't need heat, and even if you do, you ought to be fine with a lever, a spring, and a vial of mercury. So I felt a little silly ordering this. But once I got over that, I realized that this is a truly great thermostat. Here's why:
1: It's confusing - anything except a temporary override requires several screens and sequences of commands. It's enough to deter even the most determined women, who are undoubtedly trying to make the place into some kind of "heat nest".
2: It's lockable! That's right, you can lock everyone out from modifying the thermostat! And even if you don't want to go that far, you can set limits on what the temperature can be set to. Awesome!
3: And this is the best one of all.... You can program it to show a different temperature than the actual temperature!!! For obvious reasons, this is the best feature ever built into any thermostat since the dawn of time. It takes some digging to get through the manuals to figure out how to do it, but it's worth it. Here's how a conversation about an actual temperature of 68 degrees might go:
Woman: "Honey, it's awfully cold in here, can we turn up the heat?"
Man: "It's already 85 degrees in here."
Woman: "It can't be... (gets up and checks thermostat)... Hmmph, I guess you're right."
Man: "Maybe you should take some more thyroid medicine. And while you're up, make me a sandwich."
Ask yourself - does it really get any better than that?
As much as I love this thermostat, it could be improved by having some sort of fingerprint scanner, or retina ID device on it, allowing only certain people access to the thermostat. But since no competing models yet offer this feature, this is about as good as it gets for keeping YOUR castle at YOUR temperature.
Customer Review: Easy To Use, Superb Accuracy, The Best Thermostat I've Ever Had! Summary: 5 Stars
This is simply the best thermostat for anyone wanting great accuracy, easy to use screen and programming, and other extras for efficiency and savings.
I've had two thermostats in the past 3 years, because I have a two story well insulated home with cathedral ceiling down, ceiling fans, and other things that can make some thermostats not be very accurate as to temperature, and of course "cycling" and "programming." In a state where it gets very warm in the summer and very cold in the winter, it's been a constant problem and irritation having unreliable and inaccurate thermostats. Not any longer with this Honeywell model!
I tested it with very sensitive electronic digital sensors, and it reads to within .5 degrees, which means it comes on to cool and cools down abit below where it is set, and it comes back on in plenty of time (but not too early) so it efficiently cools again. The same thing goes with heating. I don't need to constantly manually adjust the temp up or down because the thermostat is not reading correct temperatures and doing its job! It has yet to fail to turn on and off at the proper times to maintain the temperatures I want. Isn't that the true test of a very good thermostat?
The light up green touch screen is very easy to read, and it has handy little reminders for filter change, humidifier pad change, etc. Also there is a very nice "circulating fan" setting which, if selected, (versus using On or Auto settings) will have the fan run about 30-35% of the time, keeping the air circulating, and making for an even more accurate and efficient heat or cool cycle. Well worth the cost. I only wish I had it last winter. This is really a quality, accurate instrument with a good warranty. My family is very impressed and pleased with it!!
Customer Review: Extremely usable with tons of features, but noisey Summary: 4 Stars
This is replacing a Carrier Totaline non-programmable fully-auto thermostat on my basic gas heat/AC HVAC. I originally purchased a Honeywell RTH7600D1006 and was extremely disappointed with it, you can see my scathing review on this site. It lacked backlight control and was extremely difficult to program.
In contrast this unit is excellent. One quick reference to the manual is all you need to get started programming it as the user interface is extremely intuitive and well laid out. You can program each day individually, multi-select days, review the programming without editing it, and on and on.
Some features this unit has that made me purchase it:
* Circulation fan control where it runs the fan 35% of the time whether the heat/AC is on or not. Seems like a feature that will help keep the temperature consistent throughout all of the rooms the HVAC services.
* Fully automatic changeover so it turns on the heat or cool for you by itself. Note you have to set this via the special installer codes covered in the manual (like all of the features not related to programming or changing the heat)
* Controllable backlight. You can configure it so there's always a low-level backlight on so you can actually see the unit in the dark.
Note this particular unit does NOT include the humidity control. That's found in the more expensive unit. But it seems like a reasonable feature to consider if you live in humid environments.
The only behaviour this unit has that I do *NOT* like, and the only reason I gave it 4 stars instead of 5, is that it makes an audible "pop" noise when switching the HVAC on/off. It's not extremely loud but my Carrier thermostat didn't make any noise and was totally silent.
