Tools and Hardware Reviews of Honeywell TH8320U1008 7day 3/h 2/c Vision PRO 8000 Touchscreen Programmable Thermostat

Customer Review: You can't go wrong!
Summary: 5 Stars

I just had a new AC system put in, and the installer suggested I replace my Honeywell Chromagraph III, which I loved. However, he was right and it was old, and had no backlight, so at night I had to keep a flashlight nearby. He wanted to go with another brand, but with my previous experience with Honeywell, and because of the excellent reviews here, I insisted on the Honeywell TH8320. I don't regret it for a second. Does everything my previous thermostat did, and more! Like the other unit, it automatically switches from heat to cool (but NOTE: it comes set as a default as Heat OR Cool, so you have to go into the Installer instructions to make it automatic, but it's easy to do that), it can have an always-ON night light (bye bye to that flashlight now!), it has a FAN Circulation mode (runs 35% of the time, which is great and at night you aren't frozen out), it has a wonderfully easy to use touch screen, and this one can do a whole lot of other things I don't need (like run 3 heat and 2 cool systems, plus heat pumps and emergency heat). Basically, all 4 of the Honeywell 8000 units are nearly identical -- 3 are supposed to be installed by professional installers (the 8320, which is this unit; the 8321 which adds humidity control, and the 8110, which only has hook ups for 1 heat and 1 cool system but has all the same features), and the 8500, which is designed as a do-it yourself thermostat. I don't have that one, but because my 8320 had 2 manuals (one for the homeowner and one for the installer, my guess is that the 8500 tells you everything you need to know without pretending it is for the professional installer). And believe me, my installer didn't even look at the installer manual and didn't know how to to switch to the fully automatic function or the night light, and he didn't have a clue that there is a special installer TEST program to test his installation, but luckily I read BOTH manuals and showed him. So if you get one of these units -- and I highly recommend them -- make sure you read BOTH manuals. As I said, the Installer manual has some very important features. But the unit itself is great, and even my wife loves it!

Customer Review: worked like a charm
Summary: 5 Stars

My wife and I had suffered with an old mechanical thermostat for several years but I held off buying a digital replacement because I couldn't find clear documentation on heating systems on the net. I recently did another google search and turned up sufficently clear instructions so I went ahead with the purchase.

It's really a shame that this upgrade is not documented more clearly because with clear instructions it really is a trivial upgrade and it has made a huge improvement in our homes temperature stability.

After some fairly complete reseach on the web which proabably took about 1 hour, it took me another hour to install and setup the new thermostat.

While I haven't had the new thermostat for long enough to know if it is reducing our electricity consumption, given how precisely it controls our temperature and automatically reduces consumption during times when we're not home or asleep, I expect it to make a big difference.

The thermostat allows one to program 4 distinct periods per day(with different settings per day of week), each with a different target temperature. The thermostat's microcontroller then tries to adjust the heating and cooling to hit those targets. It is my understanding that it learns over time how early it needs to start making a temperature adjustment based on previous attemps. I have not really experimented with this but it does appear to come very close to achieveing the exact programed temperatures at the programed time.

I really wish I had made this upgrade years earlier.

Customer Review: Heat Pump Thermostat
Summary: 5 Stars

If you are installing a heat pump system, or your original heat pump thermostat needs replacement, this Honeywell VisionPro unit is for you. This modern, touchscreen (Model TH8320U) thermostat can control up to 3 heating sources and 2 cooling sources from one thermostat, ideal for heat pump systems with an electrical emergency backup source. The installation is straight forward: using at least a 7-wire low voltage harness, connect the thermostat terminals to the color-coded wires per one of the wiring guides shown for either conventional or heat pump systems. Follow the setup functions for time and date, heating sources, and even remote temperature sensors (including outdoor temperature) if you purchased those optional units for your home. Program desired heating and cooling temperatures for each day of the week and either 4 or 2 different time periods within each day. The digital unit can even remember daylight savings time changes and can remind you about furnace filter changes, if desired. All this is contained in a 4 5/8 inch by 6 inch wall-mounted unit, which can have a convenient back light, if your heating system has a 24-volt fan relay wire. The installation guide indicates that the thermostat must be installed by a trained, experienced technician, but if you are familiar with low-voltage wiring and have the wiring diagram for yor heating system, I found it easy for home-owner installation. Shop around and you can get this unit sigificantly below MSRP. There are 3 different models, depending on your particular needs; make sure you get the correct model #!

Customer Review: Better manages airflow and frequency rate that your system cycles
Summary: 5 Stars

I had standard thermostats in my home installed by the builder when I moved in. Although they were Honeywell and were digital, they seemed to cycle too long or not long enough before shutting off. At times in the summer when I would set the temperature to hold at a specific degree, the air conditioning would not turn off until the temperature was much lower than what displayed on the thermostat. Could have been a faulty thermostat, but I had three in my home and they all seemed to share the same problem. This made the room very uncomfortable so I looked for a new solution.

I really like these thermostats and installed three to replace the old ones. They cycle at a much more efficient frequency and the rooms are much more comfortable than before. The temperature readings seem to be much more accurate as well.

I am very pleased with the touch screen feature, the daily/weekly programming capability, and the back lit display. At night when you want to make a change to the temperature in a dark room, you don't need to turn on a light to adjust the settings. Simply touch the screen and the back light comes on - very handy feature.

If you are considering an upgrade and want a more efficient unit with better capabilities I can definitely vouch that this thermostat is worth the price. It is easy to install but make sure you have a very small flat head screwdriver when doing so.

Customer Review: Excellent Digital Thermostat! Exactly what I was looking for.
Summary: 5 Stars

I got a pair of these thermostats (in June) and installed them in our home. One for the (1-heat/1-cool) gas/AC unit downstairs and one for the (2-heat/1-cool) heatpump upstairs. Installation was easy, I was expecting it to be a little more difficult actually. I was just careful about which wires I connected to which terminals (6 wires in my case). There are MANY more terminals than needed (I suppose to accommodate all the possible HVAC configurations). These units have been on now continuously for 6 months with absolutely no problems. They work wonderfully! I also like the soft green glow that comes off the display too :) Makes a handy night light for the bedroom. I can't tell you how nice it is to automatically have the heat turn down 4 degrees and the AC turn up 4 degrees in the evenings. We've all adjusted to the temp change and it's saving us $50-$85 a month in energy compared to same time last year. The Auto (climate control) setting is nice for those days that need heat in the pm and AC during the day - it takes care of switch from Heat to AC and back. It's just a wonderful thermostat. We couldn't be happier with them.
