Tools and Hardware Reviews of Honeywell YRTH8500D1008 7-Day Programmable ThermostatCustomer Review: Don't buy this model for the fan circulate mode Summary: 3 Stars
If you do a search on Amazon for the 8500, you'll see several models listed, some of which advertise an option to run the fan periodically, regardless if the heat or A/C is running or not. If you go to the Honeywell website, the product demo for the 8500 shows this option (Fan=CIRCulate) as well. But the 8500 model does not support this, only the models intended for professional installation (VisionPro?) do - even though the thermostats and screens look 100% identical.
This was my main interest in getting the thermostat, so I'm biased - it does look nice and seems to be well-designed. But having a two story house, I found we have a big difference in temp between upstairs and downstairs, so running the fan periodically makes a big difference in how comfortable the house is. I found a thermostat from Lux that does this, is 7 days programmable, and is about 40% of the price. It doesn't have the nice touch screen interface though.
Customer Review: Easy to install Summary: 5 Stars
I purchased this thermostat when I had a new gas furnace/central air unit installed in my house this past December. Very easy thermostat to install and program. The instructions were clear and well written. I found the CD that came with the product particularly helpful.
Oddly enough, the only feature this thermostat lacks that most others have is a system/energy usage monitor. In other thermostats a timer in the unit records the amount of time the system runs for the current day, previous day, and keeps a cumulative total until you reset it. I found this very useful when trying to see how temperature settings or weather conditions would impact the amount of time my A/C or heat runs. In my opinion this is a very important feature and a surprising omission by Honeywell. Had I known it was missing I would've opted to buy a different unit.
Otherwise, you can't go wrong with this thermostat.
Customer Review: Beware - No Warranty Summary: 1 Stars
Buyers be aware. I purchased a RTH 8500 last week throught Amazon and installed it myself. The installation was straightforward and the instructions clear. I liked the way it worked. Five days later the touch screen stopped working. When I called Customer Support they could not remedy the problem, it was apparently a defective product. However, I was told that because I had puchased the product on the web, the Honeywell written warranty enclosed with the thermostat would not apply in direct contradiction to what was stated. The 8500 is not available at retail stores in my area. But, I was told that if I purchased it from the web sites for Amazon, Home Depot, Ace Hardware, or others, Honeywell would not honor their own written warranty. This apparently applies to all Honeywell thermostats. Purchasers should be aware. I have written to Honeywell and I hope they will correct this.
Customer Review: Honeywell Thermostat 8500D1008 Summary: 5 Stars
I downloaded the instructions before the thermostat arrived so I had my ducks in line when it came in. I didn't have to tag each wire because the thermostat "hook-up" page codes matched the colors of the wires 90%. That was the easy part. The difficulties were in the operation instructions. Nowhere is it written, in the operator's manual, that you press the lower left hand touch screen until you get a flashing heat/air/off. Once that is accomplished you press DONE. I had to call the Pakistani "help" desk to learn all this. Now that I know what I am doing it works great. I would recommend it as a replacement for all earlier home thermostats. It also looks good and makes you feel you are in a luxury home. OK, a more expensive home.
Customer Review: Honeywell 8500D Thermostat Summary: 5 Stars
1) Installation instructions easy to follow. Should take less than half an hour. No risk of shock or fire.
2) Set-up instructions also easy to follow. Should take less than 15 minutes.
3) Unit allows for individual day of week heating and cooling settings.
4) Good warranty, which has been honored by the manufacturer in the past.
5) Much clearer readout than most LCD screens, but one still may need to adjust lighting in order to read it. I currently use three of this model thermostat in my house. However, I am not certain that it decreases my heating or AC bill.
