Flowtron wins hands down. We have two parrots, and their food causes seasonal infestations of small moths. We put both of these units near the cages, indoors. The Stinger worked ok, because spiders built webs in them, and THEY caught a few moths. The Flowtron is awesome, and clears the room in a couple nights, keeping it clear thereafter. In previous years the swarms were so bad (in the hundreds) that we couldn't use the room, and because the parrots are sensitive to poison (not to mention us!), we couldn't use pesticides. Recommend the Flowtron BK-40D Electronic Insect Killer, 1-Acre Coverage highly.Customer Review: only works one month

stinger ultra bug zapper, the only bug zapper readily purchased at Lowes and Home Depot. I purchased three of these last spring. replaced bulbs about every month. By the end of Summer only one still worked. I took it out of storage and plugged it in this spring and it didn't work even after bulb changes. Stinger makes a Piece of Junk!!!
My first Flowtron lasted 6 years and never needed a bulb change. I threw it out because I couldn't figure out how to change the bulb and purchased a new one when my stingers quit working last summer. It worked when I plugged it in this spring but the bulbs burned out. After replacing both bulbs, only one bulb worked. { NOT MADE LIKE THEY USED TO BE!}

I put one up of these bug zappers last summer. The next morning when I went out to check on it, the wire screens were COMPLETELY CLOGGED with bugs. I got a can of compressed air and blew the thing clean. The next morning, it was completely clogged again. I had to go out every morning and clean the thing out. If I forgot to clean it out, the bugs would build up so thick it would lose its effectiveness (not to mention that it would become extremely difficult to clean).
Now it's spring time. The unit had been hanging outside all winter (unplugged). I plugged it in today and nothing happened. The power LED is on, but the bulb doesn't light. I hope it's just the bulb.

So I bought this bug zapper at Lowe's and hung it up on a large tree. I set the zapper to to come on during the night-time hours, which is a nice feature. It took me a few days to figure out it didn't even come on! I played around with it for awhile and determined it did not work at all. I took it back and got another one. The 2nd one turned on but would not stop sparking. According to the directions, the metal cage was too close to each other. I messed around with it for awhile and then took it back because it would not stop sparking. The 3rd one seems to work fine!
Bottom line, if you find one that works, it seems to work very well! Keep your receipt though.

I plugged the unit in and it came on fine. It zapped one bug and never worked again. The light comes on and goes off just fine, but it hasn't killed another bug. I brought it in to see if I could find a shorted fuse or wire, but it has no user serviceable parts. I intend on buying a Flowtron after reading the other bad reviews. This particular Stinger was purchased at Lowe's Hardware as a gift. I don't think one bug is worth $60.00. I intend on trying to get Honeywell--or whoever the manufacturer is--to replace it or give me a part and a service manual. I can take a ventilator apart and put it back together, so this item should be a snap! Think they'll do it? Doubtful!
