Tools and Hardware Reviews of Hoover L1405 SpinSweep Pro Indoor/Outdoor Sweeper with Swivel Casters

Customer Review: Good light-duty sweeper for small dry debris/leaves only
Summary: 3 Stars

I reviewed others' comments and the significantly more expensive competition and decided to give this unit a try. I have a 20 x30 wood deck with a large locust tree over it which drops very small leaves all summer and into fall. This sweeper does a decent job of gathering the daily rain of these leaves. Now that it is mid-September we have a lot of larger leaves from other trees blowing onto the deck and the sweeper has a difficult time picking these up, and of course, it fills immediately.

I've used this to sweep leaves off the concrete deck surrounding my pool and it does a good job. My blower is not an option since the leaves always end up in the pool. Before purchasing the SpinSweep, I would haul out my shopvac to suck them up, which is a pain. I try to be careful not to abuse the SpinSweep on this area, because plastic does not fare well against brushed concrete. The coping is raised from the concrete deck and it is easy to grind the bottom of the SpinSweep onto the decking. Drains in the deck also pose a problem with the center of the unit digging into the other side of the drain when passing over it. If you are realistic in your sweeping, you will not destroy the product.

I recommend this cost-effective sweeper for light-duty sweeping only. If you don't abuse the unit it will perform well for you. Don't expect it to leave a pristine surface like a blower. I don't agree with other reviews which complain about the lack of rear wheels. The single, pivoting castor allows you to get creative with the sweeping path when backing up and repositioning the sweeper. If you don't want to blast debris all over like a blower, you will be pleased with the SpinSweep.

Customer Review: A HUGE time saver

I wish I had known about this product years ago! I have a big driveway with a big eucalyptus tree over it that seems to drop leaves all year round (I'm in S. Cal). I've been either sweeping or vacuuming constantly, and eucalyptus leaves have a way of "sticking" to the ground. This sweeper picks everything up effortlessly. I now have a clean driveway all the time, I almost hope for leaves just so I can push it around. Plus, my kids like to do it, too.

Pros:
-Effective at picking up otherwise hard to pick up leaves
-Effective at picking up various debris
-Not so hard to clean
-Not so hard to push
-Environmentally friendly
-Good value for the price
-Good exercise!

Cons:
-Not good at sweeping up mounds of leaves and debris
-Sticks and long pine needles get stuck in various parts (not hard to remove, though)
-Leaves a thin line of fine dirt it can't pick up each time (you can make a couple of passes to get it, though)

It does take some experimenting to figure out the best height and walking speed for the surface you are on, but once you figure it out, it works fine. Despite the product claims, don't expect to pick up big objects or plow through big mounds of leaves or dirt and expect it work well. It is NOT a vacuum cleaner. At first, I was a little dismayed in that it feels too light, i.e., a little cheap, but I got over it. I am also concerned how long the brushes will last, but I hope I can buy replacements.

Overall, one of the best outdoor maintenance products I have bought in a long time. It makes it so much easier to always have a clean driveway and patio. Highly recommended.

Customer Review: Reviews are Over-Hyped

Bought this on the basis of the reviews here and was very disappointed. I needed something to clean road dirt off of my blacktop and quick sweep our wood decks. We have an asphalt driveway, but live off a dirt road. In the winter, the dirt really piles up. To clean up, I typically rake, sweep, then power wash. Was hoping this would shortcut some of the work.

First, the good... This unit is easy to assembly, light and reasonably ergonomic. It picks up the medium sized stuff well... leaves, clumps of grass, etc. It was not at all tiring to push around, much better than brooming effort.

It does not do well with sticks and pine-needles, which tend to pile up and get caught on the side.

This unit was very incapable of clearing the fine dirt from the road. 10 passes and it only got about half of it. The dirt quickly clogged the wheel height adjustment, so it felt like I was breaking this thing when adjusting. Clouds of dirt went up all around me (this was something that I hoped to avoid). Its easy to dump the collector contents but then you have to flip the machine to get the excess out of the bottom of the pan so that the collector will rest back in the unit properly when replaced.

On our wood deck, this unit fought with every little sliver end, pulling up pieces of the deck as it went, and I did have the height properly adjusted.

Essentially a good idea, but needs better execution... this one is going back to the factory...

Customer Review: One more piece that takes space.

This is a large item, about the size of a small lawn mower. It's light weight: that's not a problme. It's $100 bucks, all said an done. It doesn't actually replace a broom: you will still need one for some jobs.

This means it's one more thing to take space and use, and so it has to "pay the rent" to be around your home. In my case, it's a nice thing, but doesn't actually pay the rent.

It picks stuff up, but it's not a lot of fun to empty. When you empty it, at least half the time you spill, so you need a broom to pick up the spillage.

If you have LOTS of concrete with small enough sticks, leaves, grass and other junk, it's useful. I bought it because i have plenty of rental properties and send a crew out with a picjup fool of lawn tools. So this thing is just one more thing.

That also means I bought it with tax-deductible money.

It's not useful at my house. I tried it out there on my deck and patio. Many sticks are too long for it. When things get wet, you have the same proplem as a broom does. My 12-year-old grandson can run it, but emptying it well becomes problematic to him.

In short, this is one more piece that takes up storage space, and is likely not going to be much help to you.

Customer Review: I am loving this thing!

I never saw the infomercial so I can't say whether this sweeper does all that is advertised. But - what it does do is GREAT. I have a very large (500+ sq ft) patio of brick pavers. It is fairly level but definitely not "smooth". I also live on wooded acres. Thus my patio is always littered with debris. Sweeping is a real chore - I was using a wide broom and a big pan. So it doesn't get done very often! The spin sweep works very well. In fact I just got it two days ago and tried it today. I waited until the patio was dry. I don't expect this to do well when wet - heck my broom doesn't do a terrific job when all is wet. It is easy to push, the bin is large and easy to empty and what doesn't come up on the first pass usually will on the second. This doesn't scour the bricks - but then it is outside and some dirt isn't a problem. It does pick up leaves, small twigs, and those squiggly things that come off of the trees as well as pine needles. It also picks up quite a bit of sand and dirt as well. I spin swept my patio in about 15 minutes without giving myself a back and arm ache. I can't comment on how it will hold up. The "arms" are light weight - but I think as long as you don't abuse it it will hold up fine.
