Tools and Hardware Reviews of Hoover L2310 GUV 10 Amp 5-Gallon Garage Utility Vacuum

Customer Review: Poor design, inadequate suction, needs emptying often
Summary: 2 Stars

I've owned this vac for about 8 months now, and have to say I would not make this purchase again if I had to do it over. I'm surprised so many people love this engineering failure.

I purchased this VAC because I have a large garage and wanted the hose to reach all corners. I think I would now give that up for a larger diameter, shorter hose. There's just not a very powerful suction when using the floor attachment.

My biggest gripe? Whomever designed this vac should be fired. The filter is located in the top portion of the vac (above the hose inlet, of course), and not part of the bottom removable canister. It is impossible to remove the filter without getting full of dust and dirt, because you have to reach up inside the canister to pull the filter out, while simultaneously trying to hold the bottom canister in place to catch any debris that invariably falls onto your arm while removing the filter.

My wife uses the vac in the house a lot to clean up cat hair and litter. However, due to the poor design, the filter gets clogged with cat hair long before the bottom of the canister fills up. I just emptied it because she complained of poor suction (couldn't even suck up cat litter with the floor attachment), and there was only about 1/2 inch of debris in the bottom of the canister. The filter, however, was caked with fuzz and fur. My friends, this is not how a vac is supposed to work.

I give this vac two stars because it is probably good at picking up certain types of debris (like leaves or other larger particles), and it is decent for vacuuming out a car. However, it could have been a much better vac and much more versatile if designed properly.

Customer Review: Will be using the Hoover to clean the dust off my Shop-Vac...
Summary: 5 Stars

A few weeks ago, I used my brother's GUV to vacuum the car, and I realized how convenient it was. I had a 60th birthday recently and bro asked what I would like for a gift..... the Hoover GUV instantly came to mind. I got it last night, installed it in a few minutes between the studs of my 2.5-car garage, and tested it..... and tested it...... and tested it. I cannot tell you how pleased I am with this gift. I cleaned the whole garage, and not only the floor, but the walls. We have a lot of spider webs, garden dirt, small pine cones, and other debris that builds up along the walls and floors. Generally, I will blow the dirt out with my blower, but need to wear a dust mask, plug my ears, and shower afterwards. The GUV makes cleaning so much easier.
Plusses: It is quiet. No need for ear plugs, etc.
It is well-built. Don't know where it was made, but this is a sturdy piece of equipment. The attachments are also well-made of heavy plastic and rubber. The general-purpose tool has some nubs on it that 'scour' carpeting and get it really deep-cleaned.
The suction is very good. Even with a 30-foot hose, it sucks up better than my shop vac.
Cleaning it is very easy. Just dump the bottom container. I haven't cleaned the lifetime filter yet.
The hose length is great. I can reach every corner of my garage, and every side of my cars.
Negatives: None yet.
If you need to buy a gift for someone who 'has everything', then consider this vacuum. It is one of the best gifts i've received, and I know I will use it often. In fact, I'm thinking about buying another one for the basement shop area. This is a fine product.

Customer Review: Use a great car wash vacuum, without leaving home
Summary: 4 Stars

I can't say enough good things about this vacuum. It is very similar to a commercial vacuum you would find outside a car wash. It offers very strong suction with a 30' hose. Very easy to mount. To empty you simply move 2 clips at the bottom of the unit and the bottom (with picked up items in it) drops out for easy dumping. We have owned this unit for 6 months. Recently we started to notice sparks coming out of the switch when it was flipped on. The unit still worked but the intermittent sparks bothered me. I was pleasantly surprised to find that Hoover offers a 3 year warranty (find that anywhere else). The manual referred me to Hoover's website which showed me what places I could take the vacuum to for the warranty work. There were several Hoover approved vacuum businesses in my area so I took it to one and they put on an upgraded switch in the vacuum. I got my vacuum back the next day-free of charge. The vacuum once again works great and if I have any more issues I still have 2.5 years left on the warranty. Highly recommend this product.
update July 16,2010-I noticed some other reviews with the same issue with the switch failing/giving off sparks. One reviewer stated that Hoover wouldn't fix this. I would respectfully say that had she done this properly (go to the website and contact the local company that does Hoover warranty work) that it would have been 100% covered as was mine. I wouldn't let the switch issue keep me from buying this vacuum. If it comes up you have 3 years in which to get it taken care of. I am giving this 4 stars even though it performs as a 5 star product because of the problem with the switch.

Customer Review: Powerful Vacuum
Summary: 5 Stars

Despite owning a 5 gal wet/dry shop vac and a portable small car vac, I still need to buy a dependable powerful vac. Also I need to wear an ear mop (to minimize the noise level) every time I used the shop vac but it's even more frustrating because it has very little suction power. The small portable vac is a joke too - the sucking power is misirable. I tried to give away those vacs and no takers so far.

The 5 gal Hoover GUV is powered by 10 amps. Compare that to the competetions from 5 gals to as much as 20 which is powered by 5 amps only. Big difference of suction power. Believe it or not, the Hoover GUV is 500% quieter than my shop vac. The Guv is very efficient, productive, powerful, dependable, and time-saver. Not only I used it to clean my garage, car, I also use it to clean the insides of my house such as the laminated floors, rest room, kitchen, etc. The top part of the GUV (where the motor resides)is hot but it is very manageable as I touched it. I think the reasoning for it, is the tightening effect or tight contaction of the hose against its housing unit to maintain its powerful sucking power.

It is made in Canada. It is not available in any Sears Stores that I visited (Hoover is a Sears brand). It is very light, rigid construction, nothing to assemble and ready to work. Installation is easy, stick a nail near the electrical outlet and it will make your suction tasks easier and comfortable. For sure, you will not be disappointed.

Customer Review: Nice vacuum,
Summary: 4 Stars

I purchased this vacuum after reading a number of online reviews that identified the Hoover L2310 as the highest rated vacuum. After using the vacuum for two weeks on four cars and the garage floor here are my impressions:

Pros
1. Quiet operation - much quieter than a shop vac or home vacuum. It's easy to hold a conversation while vacuuming.
2. Long hose - the 30 foot hose allows me to vacuum the floor of my two-car garage. Given where I installed the vacuum it also let's me vacuum cars in my driveway.
3. Comes with an attachment caddy that makes changing attachment a little quicker

Cons
1. Mounting bracket is flimsy - this isn't a light vacuum cleaner and the bracket that was provided seems undersized. There is also the risk of the vacuum slipping out of the bracket if the hose is tugged.
2. Mounting hardware is undersized - came with four 3/4" screws and plastic sheetrock "plugs." The hardware was inadequate so I installed the vacuum on a 2"X4" board that straddeled two studs in my garage. I couldn't imagine using the supplied hardware considering a good tug on the hose could potentially rip the vacuum off the wall.

While it was mildly frustrating buying a vacuum that required modification to the mounting system, the actual operation of the vacuum is outstanding. The only time the interior of my cars have been this clean has been after detailing.
