Tools and Hardware Reviews of Hoover LINX Cordless Stick VacuumCustomer Review: Not Perfect but maybe class favorite Summary: 3 Stars
I looked at the Electrolux EL1014A ErgoRapido Bagless Cordless Handheld/Stick Vacuum Cleaner in-store and was impressed with it's pivotal steering and quiet/smooth feel on tile and carpet in the store but read reviews and agreed with complaints about its tiny dirt cup capacity, fiber filter, and no replaceable battery and that could render it useless within a year. Disappointing for such a fine potential machine.
So I ordered this one thinking it was all of that and more given the reviews and my satisfaction with my other Hoover Platinum devices. This one came off the drawing board too soon. It has most of the features but not well executed. The pivot is there in the base but due to the length and size of the bottom assembly, no functional steering results in any effort to steer by pivot. I actually would have preferred the smaller head for steering and maneuvering in tight places like the toilet or stairs (luckily I don't have stairs). It's not a functional feature; just stick with the pitching of handle side to side and lowering for clearing furniture and obstacles. This has to be why some complain this vacuum doesn't do stairs well. It gets awkward in tight places and will not clean around toilets if the wall is too close and forget about behind the toilet. No attachments and will not convert to a dust buster. No fold-down handle for storage. No bumper guard to protect the silver finish. No charging tray to sit the whole vacuum in when not using. But at least it can stand on its own and picks-up well and vacuums well around the sides. I suppose the limitations are due to the patented use of Wind Tunnel Technology that calls for a sizable bottom vacuum assembly.
I like the dirt cup capacity and hepa filter. The vacuum seems pick-up dust well without kicking any behind or allowing dust to fly past the hepa filter. But be aware of the dust that will immediately fall from crevices around the gasket edge when opening the dirt cup to empty. Hold the dirt cup over trash can and lower dirt cup well within the trash can opening because the path of dust falling will tend to follow the lid as it opens wider. My first experience left a swath of dust about two tiles worth and no battery charge left to quickly pick it up. The battery operated trash can lid also added to the frustrating task of emptying without a mess. Looks like I'll have to start going outside to empty dirt cups in both vacuums.
The small opening in front/center allows for picking-up larger objects without pushing them around the room like other bare-floor cordless vacuums tend to do but you have to center the vacuum on the object or you will push it around unless you lift a wheel or pick the vacuum up and sit it on the object. I only mention this because I seen this being done on video reviews of bare-floor vacuums and noticed some of these vacuums lack an opening to pull larger particles in. The openings in the sides allow for side suction of dirt and dust but not much else. For raised tile the feel and noise of the bumps are not excessive and there is a felt strip that runs along the bottom near the vacuum opening to act both as a squeegee and a noise buffer by function. The rubber wheels in back dampen feedback and noise while riding up and down on the raised tile. Again, IMO, a smaller bottom assembly would have minimized this noise and feedback while allowing improved steering in tight places and stairs.
The battery is programmed to timeout at 15 minutes for another charge which is the only thing that allows the full power to charge performance. The battery is not being drained but actually times out; it's programmed to do so. IMO, that's creating the memory problem that Hoover pretends doesn't exist. Hoover states the battery should last 600 to 800 recharge cycles but it impresses upon me that the battery could be more useful and last even longer without the internal programming set like it is. Your ear telling the power is drained is merely a timer kicking-in and shutting you down, placing you in timeout, penalizing you for not purchasing the spare battery. To me it's a trade-off; you're sacrificing usable battery time and life expectancy for a pre-programmed shorter span that makes the second battery a necessity if 15 minutes is not enough to finish the few tasks given this machine. I think I could live with it on one battery to do my short list (two tiled bathrooms, bathmats, entry, dining-room, and kitchen. BUT I'M NOT SURE HOW THAT IMPACTS HAVING IT ON-DEMAND FOR QUICK PICKUPS; I see a scenario playing out where I've nearly drained the battery and start doing the full list of chores and it times-out of power and makes me wait up to three hours for a recharge. Each recharge uses a little more of its life cycle so a early charge to avoid this playing scenario depletes the battery of life even quicker. I have to agree with other reviews; the second battery should be included in this price range. I almost had Hoover convinced of this but their answer was that this device packaged for a short period in some test markets with two batteries but for whatever reason, the strategy wasn't working for Hoover.
I'll keep it and use it but I think I may have kept looking or opted for the second battery if I knew what I learned after using it and calling Hoover about it. I don't feel this machine is worthy of the Platinum line and name. It's off par of the quality of the UH70015 and F8100900 that I own. Like others have said the second battery could have been included at this price range and I'm hoping for an upgraded battery that will be cheaper and not programmed like the current battery.
