Tools and Hardware Reviews of Hoover Tempo Widepath Upright Vacuum, Bagged, U5140-900

Customer Review: I Love this Vacuum!
Summary: 5 Stars

HI! I just have to tell everyone that this is a great value! This vacuum rocks! I was searching for a vacuum after my old one stopped vacuuming. Well let me tell you first I wanted something light weight as I have carpel tunnel in both wrist as well as arthritis in my thumbs. So first I bought one of the rechargeable light weight kind that has a removable hand held unit. I thought it was sleek and perfect. Well I recharged it for 48 hours (like it said) and it worked all of 12 minutes! I tried recharging it and no go, it just won't work...and of course I destroyed the box so I am stuck! Well I still needed a vacuum and badly so I researched everywhere and discovered that the light weight vacuums are either too expensive or don't do the job.

Well after hours and hours of research I came upon this Hoover Tempo and thought I would give it a try. It was reasonably priced and it was from Amazon so I could return it if I didn't love it.

This vacuum has unbelievable suction and did my living room rug (which was pretty nasty since I had no vacuum for awhile) in about 3 minutes. This vacuum has a mind of it's own I turned it on it took off across the floor, it sucked up everything even somethings I didn't want it to, like a shoelace the kids had left out. But I was thrilled! It cleaned my room in no time and better than my old vacuum did when it worked. It has adjustments for bare floors and they work! It's very easy to maneuver so I have no pain (like I use too) when operating it. It also comes with attachments that are very easy to use and fit right on the vacuum with no problems. I know that some say the cord is too short but I have a small house and I just moved it from room to room without issue.

The price of this vacuum is very competitive, and a sight less than what I paid for the rechargeable piece of junk I bought. Amazon offered free shipping and I received it in three days!

So If you're looking for a great vacuum, get the Hoover Tempo! Believe me I researched the heck out of it and if you can't afford a Dyson then this is your answer!

Customer Review: Great little vaccuum!
Summary: 5 Stars

With three spaniels running about my house, regular vacuuming is a necessity. Having had it with our mini vacuum from college, my husband and I set aside a few hundred dollars and started our research into the best model. We were SO surprised that after reading quite literally thousands of reviews on Amazon, consumer reviews, and blogs, we were left with this reasonably priced model and the, somewhat less reasonably priced, Dyson Animal. Once we realized that for the price of the latter we could use our budget to get both this Hoover vacuum and a carpet steam cleaner, we knew the decision was made.

And now? Couldn't be happier with the Hoover Vacuum (or the Steam Cleaner for that matter, but that's for another review)! Pushing my old vaccuum across the floor used to be uncomfortable, but this one is lightweight and almost self-propells across the carpet; I feel like I'm holding it back from racing across the room! It also takes about a third of the time as my old vacuum and does a much superior job. The Hoover's enthusiasm for cleaning my floors has actually given me more drive to vaccuum more often, as it is pretty fun to 'drive,' and leaves my floors looking flawless.

I purchased replacement belts and bags when I bought the vacuum, both of which are so cheap that it will be a very long time till it ever reaches the price of the dyson, and, call me old fashioned, but I find the bagless vacuums generally end up awkward to empty, where unclipping one bag and putting in another is a ten second ordeal that doesn't spill any dirt on my newly cleaned floors as was a problem with my previous bagless model. It is fairly light weight, carrying it upstairs hasn't been any trouble. As for the pet hair, it's gone. My old vaccuum used to clog with hair every time it was used, and generally several times during the session, but this Hoover has never clogged, stopped, faltered, or done anything other than energetically race to clean my floors with minimal effort from me. I can't remember ever having purchased an appliance that made such a big improvement in my house that was as matinence free as this vacuum.

Customer Review: This is not the product you think it is!
Summary: 1 Stars

This is not the product you think it is. The picture and schematic for this item are both WRONG. Hoover has changed the product but left the model number the same. The new revised unit is not the same old beloved vacuum to which all the reviews prior to 2010 are referring. This version is a cheap imitation of the former. This "revised" model features:

- NO Headlight
- NO Bag Indicator
- NO hose coupling dust cover
- CHEAPER plastic
- CHEAPER carpet brush
- CHEAPER hose
- SHODDIER construction
- INCORRECT user manual

It still has the same amount of suction but because of the cheaper brush it doesn't really get down into the carpet like the old one. It just glides on top over the carpet. The cheaper hose is a real problem, because if you ever suffer the misfortune of kinking the hose once you will never get it un-kinked again. The lack of headlight is not a big deal, but the picture shows it has one and some people may need this feature. The missing bag indicator means you have to keep stopping and checking the bag to see if it's full. The plastic parts are made from a cheaper flimsy plastic. This makes the unit lightweight but it also means not everything fits together properly, for instance several of the attachments are misshapen. The old unit used to have a dust cover so when you used the hose it would not spew dust into the room (because the brush keeps turning). The "revised" model has no dust cover so you better get ready for a face full of dirt if you pull the hose out over a dusty area. The general construction of the unit is sub-par compared to the old version. In fact, the user manual is still from the old version, meaning the assembly instructions are incorrect for the revised version. You will have to figure out for yourself where to route the power cord on the rear of the chassis.

The vacuum does still work, has strong suction, and works well on carpet if you put it on the lowest height and really dig into the carpet. But you can probably find something better for your money. And Amazon should update their product photos!

Customer Review: very disappointed - Hoover is trying to trick people
Summary: 1 Stars

Having read about the switch from a great vacuum to a not-so-good vacuum by the same name, I tried to get the old (good) one from E-Bay. Unfortunately, I got the new version. It seriously does blow dust, hair etc. all over the vacuum, the vacuumer, the room, etc. when you use the tools. I went to Hoover's website to see if there was any suggestions - no. I contacted Hoover by email telling them how disappointed I was, and asking if there was a fix for the dust blowing around - about a week later they replied that I should phone them. I phoned them - I was put on hold then given the option to be phoned back. A rep. phoned back after about an hour and a half. She knew what I wanted, but waited until I stated it all again before she let me know, then told me to move the beater brush up to the highest position. I told her that I was sure I had tried that and it didn't work. She said that should take care of it.... And that was it. So, I tried it again, and moving the brush to the highest setting does help but doesn't prevent the problem. I certainly don't trust Hoover now that they have knowingly put out an inferior product with the same name as an apparently excellent one.

So for this vacuum:
Pro's:
Good suction (careful it's very strong)
Lightweight
Good cord length

Con's:
It blows dust, etc. up in the air when you use the tools - make sure you do the edges and other tools vacuuming first or you'll have to re-vacuum the room
It pulls so hard that you have to work to restrain it so that it doesn't pull into something you don't want to vacuum up
The flexible hose is cheap (already has a kink after a couple months) and too short to be convenient
No light
Some of the tools fall off easily while you are vacuuming with the whole unit so you have to keep picking them up
Tools (brush, etc.) are very small, so job takes longer

I would not buy this again nor recommend anyone else buy it unless they will never use the tools.

Customer Review: Love the vacuum!
Summary: 5 Stars

After my 12-13 year old Eureka finally started showing it's age while still doing a decent job, I bought the Hoover Tempo Widepath Upright Vacuum, Bagged, U5140-900 from a local Do It Best Hardware store-- I figured the few extra dollars it cost at the store was worth the convenience, in case I needed to return it. As a test, I first vacuumed my 3-room apartment using my "sufficient" old Eureka, and then re-vacuumed with the new Hoover. Although my old vacuum seemed to perform better than it had in months (as though it somehow "knew" it was being compared to it's new replacement), when I re-vacuumed with the Hoover, it sounded like I was vacuuming the parking lot. I couldn't believe all the sand and dirt I heard it picking up!

I had been hesitant to buy this particular vacuum, because of reviewers' complaints of it being too loud and made of cheap plastic, and needing frequent bag/belt replacements. Although it's not a quiet machine, it's not as loud as my regular-sounding Eureka was. In fact, my cat (who always runs and hides when I vacuum) actually stayed in her cat bed and watched as I ran the Hoover for the first time. Who says vacuuming is supposed to be a quiet chore, anyway??? Yes, the attachments are plastic, but no flimsier than the Eureka's, which I found to be more than adequate. The Hoover's plastic body helps keep it light-weight, yet it's sturdy enough for the job. I've only had the Hoover for 13 days, and I've used it 3 times-- haven't broken a belt nor filled a bag, but when the time comes, I will probably order replacements from Amazon, as I believe the prices were lower when compared to WalMart. The vacuum came (from the store) with 3 bags, which may need to be replaced often only by virtue of the fact that this machine picks up so much dirt! The light-weight construction and strong suction make this model very easy to use and virtually self-propelled.
