Tools and Hardware Reviews of Hoover Tempo Widepath Upright Vacuum, Bagged, U5140-900Customer Review: Very Loud, works poorly Summary: 1 Stars
This is your basic vacuum cleaner.
Set up: Had some trouble pushing the 2 screws in because the holes were misaligned. Took some effort and time to finally get them through the holes. The screws were not a tight fit, meaning they didn't screw in tightly into the washers.
Vacuum: Only used once.
PROS: As far as I can tell, the vacuum does a decent job. The accessories work. Small and lightweight. There is a pull on the vacuum which makes maneuvering it easier.
CONS:The cord and the hose are a bit short, as mentioned in previous reviews. It is also very, very loud. I am certain the people next door could hear me vacuuming through the walls. Unlike the vacuum described in the manual, there is no light indicator to tell you which areas are especially dirty or clean. So, you won't know which areas to go over more than once. There is also no sounds indicating it's actually picking up dirt. I did notice the vacuum sometimes didn't pick up little pieces of dirt that I could visually see on the carpet, other times it did fine.
Overall, you get what you pay for.
**UPDATE: I've had this vacuum cleaner for several months now. I can say this vacuum is absolutely horrible. I'm going to have to get rid of it, and buy a new one. First, it does not vacuum or suck up well on basic (not high pile) carpet. I literally have tried going over dirt that I can visibly see several times, just to see it still there after several passes. Second, it has a fan that blows back, which ends up blowing dirt behind the vacuum. On tile, after a vacuuming an area, I often find dirt/hair that has accumulated behind the vacuum. The floor looks dirtier than if I didn't vacuum with dust balls/hair. The only thing that works is the hose, which is very short. No idea why this vacuum has such a positive rating.
Customer Review: Best inexpensive vacuum I've ever owned. Summary: 5 Stars
After using a couple of of bagless upright vacuum cleaners, I had become fed up with the filthy chore of dumping the dirt cup and cleaning all the extra filters needed to keep the dirt out of the motor. Since bagged vacuums are hard to find in retail stores, I decided to check out the selection on Amazon and read the reviews. That's where I stumbled upon the Hoover U5140-900 Tempo. Based on the numerous rave reviews, I took a chance.
The first time I tried the vacuum, I was amazed. It has a stronger suction than any other upright vacuum I have used including models costing twice as much. My wife and I noticed how much cleaner our carpets appeared after just one use. Months later we are still impressed with how well it cleans each time we use it.
Plus the HEPA filter combined with an allergen bag keeps the air much cleaner than with other vacuums. Very important at my house since my wife suffers from allergies and asthma. She no longer complains of any reaction to dust in the air after vacuuming. And I noticed how much cleaner the air smells after using it. Other vacuums seem to put a fair amount of fine dust into the air. Not this baby!
There are some drawbacks to this vacuum. The included tool set is very basic. The hose that detaches from the base for use with the tools is rather short. And the power cord that comes with the vacuum is a bit shorter than I would prefer. But the cord length is easily fixed with a heavy duty extension cord, and in spite of the short hose I find it is adequate for most jobs.
For the price, this vacuum is hard to beat. If I ever needed to buy another vacuum, I would gladly buy this one again. It is inexpensive, it really sucks the dirt out of your carpet, and it is much cleaner to use than any bagless could ever hope to be.
Customer Review: A Good "2nd floor" vacuum choice Summary: 4 Stars
We were looking for a vacuum we could use on the 2nd floor of our home that had an allergy filter, was light weight, and reasonable cost.
The Hoover Tempo Widepath U5140-900 has fit our needs and was a good choice for us. The reason why we considered this vacuum was because it had a good rating in consumer reports and was lighter in weight than a lot of uprights. Consumer reports did state that this vacuum performs better on carpets than bare floors. This again fit our situation because our 2nd floor is all carpet.
Some reviewers have criticized this vacuum. However, compared to the 1990 Hoover Legacy vacuum that we were using on the 2nd floor, this vacuum was an upgrade for us. True, this vacuum is not quite as good as our Kenmore progressive model that we use on the first floor of our home, but the cost was a lot less and the weight was less.
Compared to our 1990 model year vacuum....
The cord length of both was within 3" of each other. Hoover Tempo has about 23 feet, 9 inches of usable cord stretch after the cord is attached to the clips on the vacuum to keep it tucked up out of the way when in use.
The Hoover Tempo has a 29" flex hose. This was 3" less than our old vacuum. If you have a concern about the hose length, as other reviewers have pointed out, there is an option to purchase a longer hose.
The parts do seem to be flimsier than the 1990 model. Especially the lid covering the hose connection port. Unfortunately, that is a trend with a lot of manufactured items now made outside the USA.
This vacuum does have an allergy filter, but it is NOT a full blown HEPA filter system that our downstairs vacuum has. But this is an upgrade from our 1990 model that did not have any filter system.
Customer Review: Average, not great, not bad... Summary: 3 Stars
Edit: Read "John Smith's" review in March of 2010. Now I know why I'm so disappointed, I received the updated (new) version of the vacuum that is complete junk. Apparently there are 2 versions and the new one is a hunk of cheap plastic. For the money I paid I kept it, not expecting much anyway so hereafter is my original review:
I didn't expect a lot at this price and after my last cheap hoover which I used only a few times before giving to goodwill, I bought this purely on reviews.
CONS:
~It's the LOUDEST vacuum I've ever owned. My ears ring after every use, I need to buy earplugs.
~Rattley, plastic and cheap, you are pushing around a load of rattley plastic. It just feels so cheap.
~Hose is almost worthless. Kinked with first use, exceptionally poor quality, thin, short and needs replacement pronto.
~Does a terrible job on tile. Spits stuff everywhere. This is a shame, my house is 90% tile. I now have to use the cheap hose on the tile to pick up all the stuff not picked up but spit everywhere.
~Way too chunky, big and awkward to get under anything. Out comes that darn hose constantly.
PROS:
~Nice blue color.
~Cheap price which is all I could do right now.
~Works great on my big rugs.
~I like "bagged" vacuums better than "bagless", much less mess and easier for me to use so this is a pro.
~Pretty good suction although took the corners of many rugs and instantly caught them up inside. Be careful.
~Hose, albeit cheap and kinks easily, has lots of power. TOO much. (Pro or con here?) And sucks small rugs up so tightly you have to yank to get them off. There has to be a happy medium here with this darn hose. It works great in corners and stuff, however, because of the power. Just doesn't reach far.
Customer Review: Hoover u5140-900 tempo wider bagged upright vacuum Summary: 5 Stars
I never review anything when I first get it. I use it for awhile. Because it looks nice and runs when I turn it on doesn't make it a great machine.
This definitely a good deal. I am a church janitor so it gets lots of use.
-It arrived at my door ahead of schedule.
-It really sucks. As long as it isn't in the lowest position it edge cleans very well. This is just suction of course so if it is set to low obviously it can't edge clean.
-The 25 foot cord was to short so I cut it off and added about 15 feet. You wouldn't want to add much more though or else the cord will get to hot when it runs for an hour or more at a time.
-The on board tool holders hold the tools very well. I don't think I have ever lost one off of it and had to pick up like seems to happen with many vacuums.
-One thing that isn't good about it is the bag full indicator. It's a joke. But it doesn't matter to me because I carry up and downstairs by the handy carrying handle built in over the bag holder. It doesn't take long to figure out that when it starts to get heavy the bag is getting full. It's easy to open and check, too.
-The last vacuum I had and one of the others I still use when my wife steals the new one is a bagless. I wouldn't take a truck load of bagless vacuums if they gave them to me. The filters are always plugged up. They talk about how great they are because they are so easy to dump without making a mess. They don't mention the mess cleaning the filters make. Besides the huge dirt canister on most of the bagless makes impossibe to get under low stuff.
-I think they should have a dimmer switch on the headlight because it will momentarily blind pets hiding under stuff from the vacuum.
-I don't think you could find a better vacuum even for a lot more money.
