Tools and Hardware Reviews of Household Essentials 7119 Metal-Frame Triple Sorter Bin with Wheels, Black FrameCustomer Review: Wheel strength a concern in more recently-produced versions Summary: 4 Stars
I own two of these. If I had based my review on only the first of them, it would have been five stars. But the second one has fragile wheels.
I use these as laundry hampers/sorters for my sons. 3 bins means one each for laundry to be washed in hot, warm, and cold water. I have my kids (all except the 2 year old) sort their own laundry into these bins. Not only does it keep me from having to sort their laundry, it teaches them how to do it. So, when they get older and do their own laundry, hopefully they can avoid having pink underwear.
Before buying this sorter, I tried several other models, all of which completely fell apart. Some lasted only days, others a few months. But the frame on this thing is rock-solid. The oldest one I bought is about 3 years old and still in perfect condition. Even when the hampers are completely full, the frames do not bend or flex, even when I wheel the unit around the house. The bags stay firmly in place, held by the velcro. These sorters are also easy to assemble, even for someone who is not mechanically-inclined. On the first (3 year old) sorter, all four wheels are still attached and working properly.
Now the bad news: The second sorter I bought (which is now almost six months old) lost a wheel within a couple of months. The plastic housing above the wheel shattered into many small pieces; it was not repairable. I haven't been able to find a replacement wheel. So for about four months I have been using it with three wheels. This entails propping the corner that's missing a wheel up against a wall for support and lifting that corner when moving the unit. It's inconvenient, but the sorter still serves its purpose and is still mobile.
Then, a couple of days ago, the wheel diagonally opposite the missing wheel popped out. Thankfully, none of the parts broke, and we were able to pop the wheel back into the frame. Now I am concerned that this wheel is going to break off, too. If it does, I may have to just remove the other two wheels, and treat this as a stationary unit. That won't be nearly as convenient. I like that I can have the kids keep these in their rooms and then wheel them to the laundry room on laundry day. (The kids are more likely to sort their clothes without being reminded constantly if I keep the hampers in their rooms. If they have to carry their dirty clothes across the house to the laundry room, they tend to "forget" a lot.)
It's frustrating, since the first sorter still has all four wheels intact. Either my second one is defective, or at some point the manufacturer began using cheaper materials for the wheels to save a few bucks.
So, now I have to give this a qualified recommendation. If you won't need to roll it around a lot, I think this sorter is great. But I would advise caution if you want a sorter you can move around a lot, especially when full. You may have the same problem I am having with fragile wheel assemblies.
