Tools and Hardware Reviews of Whitney Design 05111 RTA Folding Wood Clothes Drying Rack

Customer Review: Worth the price, but assemble carefully
Summary: 3 Stars

It only costs $8, so even with my complaints. It's still a good deal.

Basically, these folding wood clothes dryers are great. Especially if you're a college student like me and have to use a laudromat (saves quarters and the time of using the electric dryers) or if you have things that shouldn't be put in the dryer (wool, etc). In fact, all fabrics last longer and look newer if you use the air-dry method (plus it conserves energy).

As far as this particular model goes, the color-coded assembly is as easy as described, assuming the dowels don't break from the meager pressure and twisting it takes to get some of the dowels to snap together. The dowels are *really* flimsy and I did snap one in half. Amazon's description of the dowels, "their hardwood centers and stout plastic coating," is more than a little exaggerated. The "hardwood" dowels are really cheap and the "stout plastic coating" doesn't add anything to their strength, though I'm sure they do help prevent snags in fabric. But after some Elmer's glue and a little duct tape, I was able to finish assembling this little puppy and for $8, I'm still happy with it.

Customer Review: Fragile, but will work well for a handy man
Summary: 3 Stars

This is a very light and fragile construction assembled from wooden dowels laminated with plastic and thin wooden planks. A few years ago I purchased a previous model from a hardware store; eventually one of the planks broke near its end that held the structure assembled, So I have been looking for a replacement since and bought a couple of these now.

I don't remember having any problems assembling the older version, but this one was harder. The problem is the instruction sheet is not clear about how to align the wooden frames before assembly. Also, some dowels do not fit in easily. If you inserted a dowel incorrectly, chances are that a plastic end will come off when you pool the dowel out.

If you have some simple tools and 20 minutes of time, you can fix all its problems and have a very light foldable drying rack that has no better alternatives at Lowes, Home Depot, and some other chains that I personally visited when looking for a drying rack.

Customer Review: junk!
Summary: 1 Stars

total piece of junk! Assembly is easy in concept, but difficult to actually do, because the construction and workmanship is so utterly poor. I bought this thing and one of the wood legs was nearly rotted through, but i figured i'd rather just wrap some tape around the stupid thing to keep it working. But after one use of holding actual clothes, that bum leg broke all the way through. So i called amazon for a replacement, which they sent no problem. But they made me return the old one.. which was a huge pain, because clearly it is not designed to ever be disassembled. Several of the legs broke when i tried to unplug the rods, and it all barely fit back in the box. And of course i had to take it to the post office myself too. So all this effort and headache for a lousy $10? Forget it.. get a better one from BBB for $20.

Customer Review: Don't buy this -- it will break
Summary: 1 Stars

I bought one. It came broken. Amazon sent me another.

Assembling the second one, a wooden dowel broke. It just splintered length-wise.

The wood is dry and brittle, very weak. Just sticking them down into the plastic holders will crack them.

Once set up, it is so weak it bounces.

I don't know what kind of wood they used, balsa wood?, but it is so flimsy and dry, other things began to crack when opening it up and setting wet clothes on it.

Instead, I bought a tensor pole for over the bath tub (I think they're shower curtain rods) and some plastic clothes pins.

Customer Review: Complete junk!
Summary: 1 Stars

This is easily the worst clothes dryer I've ever seen. It looks like they took the cheap wood used to make wooden pallets and cut them into the shape they wanted. The plastic used for the fasteners is the cheapest feeling floppy stuff imaginable, and is held onto the dowels by a single metal staple. One dowel came out of the box with the cross section shape of a D instead of round. It fell out repeatedly. One of the top dowels just broke after a handful of uses--plastic sheered off from inside the fastener.

Line up ten dollar bills, and burn them underneath your clothes. It will last longer and dry your clothes faster.
