When you work night shifts, you need 2PM to sound like what everyone else expects 2AM to sound like. The light gets blocked with black-out shades and an eye mask, but the noise gets drowned out by a white noise maker and a good pair of ear plugs. I've been doing this for years, and have found that the most expensive ear plugs were not the best for me. So far, the Howard Leight LL1 Laser Lite plugs (I buy the non-corded...I'm in bed, not at work) have worked the best. A key factor is how the ear plug feels in your ear; these gently but completely fill out the ear canal without pushing against it. This effectively gives me quiet without the irritation against the ear canal that keeps me from staying asleep. The orange 3M plugs are a close second, but they do tend to exert enough pressure to be noticeable after a few hours. As other reviewers have mentioned, some of this depends on the size and shape of your particular ear canals. But if you're like me, you'll find the Howard Leight LL1 earplugs to be the best.Customer Review: shhhh

These are very comfortable...lots of earplugs aren't as comfy. Having insomnia, I have tried EVERYTHING...I currently have a son whose bedroom is on top of mine (14 yrs old, plays guitar...) and a daughter living below my room. Without my earplugs I usually can't get to sleep (yes, I am the old fart who goes to bed before everyone else). These earplugs are a great deal. I use my plugs for at least a week or two before discarding. I just keep them in the plastic pouch during the day to keep them dust free. They're only going in my ears, so I don't see why I wouldn't. I have earplugs in my beach bag for when I am at the beach and there's screaming children. I take them on the airplane...again it helps me get through the screaming children. I wouldn't say they are completely soundproof when you are out in public dealing with loud noises, but they are very helpful and a good bargain.
I've purchased several brands over the years and I am happiest with this.

These ear plugs are life changers. While I used another ear plug previously, I tried these after reading reviews, and am now a believer. You can roll them into a cylinder and they hold their shape much longer, making insertion easier. They also last a really long time, I reuse them over and over again, and I expect the box to last for years! One tip - I snip a tiny bit off the wider end, because they are still a drop too long for my ear canal, and then the fit is perfect. These are great for people with narrower ear canals who are uncomfortable with larger ear plugs. With these my sleep has totally changed, I can sleep much more deeply and can go anywhere, hotels, noisy cities, etc, without fear of being awakened by errant noise. Best of all, my husband sleeps better, too, as I no longer elbow him angrily all night long to stop his snoring. All this from a little earplug!Customer Review: I'm a sound sleeper!

I am a very light sleeper. I used to wake up with anxiety attacks at night because I would hear a noise and not know what it was. I bought several pairs of these earplugs at the grocery store. The only store I could buy them from suddenly quit selling them. I came to [...] with hope of finding these wonderful earplugs. I found a great company that sold them in bulk, I am guessing for industrial use. I love having this huge box of earplugs on hand so that I know I don't have to worry about missing any sleep. I have packets of these earplugs every where, in my car, in my purse,in our luggage, and in my night stand. These earplugs are a life saver. I can't hear the noises that keep me awake at night but I can still hear my alarm in the morning and the smoke alarms, if I need to. I love these earplugs and I feel like I can't live without them!Customer Review: The only brand I use

I've been using these for the last 5 years, due to a less than optimal combination of neighbors and apartment wall quality. Thankfully I've moved since then, though I still use these on occasion, camping for example. I've taken them to Africa on Kilimanjaro (where they worked perfectly!) and on vacation to large cities where my neurotic need for complete quiet kicks in ;)
-1 star for their tendency to fall out while sleeping, though while reading other reviews this doesn't seem to be a problem for others.
Overall these are great earplugs. The 'handles' keep them from going in too far and make them easy to remove. I could never use the wax plugs because they never stayed in and I felt like they were poking my inner ear (kind of scary actually).
