Tools and Hardware Reviews of Howard Leight MAX1 Earplugs Uncorded NRR33 Box/200 CountCustomer Review: Affordable and Effective Earplugs! Summary: 5 Stars
My dear neighbor is very old and almost deaf. The music he enjoys is beautiful, but the volume unbearable. When I first started law school, the music was a big problem: the constant humming and drumming was driving me insane. To make matters worse, my neighbor had insomnia. The music would come at random hours in the dead of night. I had difficulty concentrating, especially during finals. Several times, I found myself pounding on his door in the middle of the night out of desperation, but I always felt bad because he was not even aware how loud the music was. Moving was not an option at the time.
The top quality earplugs at the local grocery store were a bit expensive. As a broke first-year law student, I could not afford to buy those in large quantities. Then my prayers were answered: I discovered "Howard Leight" brand earplugs. They were affordable, and very effective. For about $20, I got a gigantic supply that was sufficient for two semesters. I started wearing them while studying. All noises would vanish when I put them on--except the occasional humming from my neighbor's loudspeaker. I couldn't hear the music with the earplugs on, but the bass was still audible at times.
This is what worked for me: I would wear these earplugs and sit at my study desk facing the wall where the music was coming from. Although I am not very familiar with the laws of physics (i.e. how sound travels), I noticed that I heard almost nothing when I sat facing the wall. When I sat with my back toward the wall, the humming was audible. It was counter-intuitive, but worked very well for me.
I would highly recommend this product to students who have sharp hearing, study a lot, and are stressed during finals.
Customer Review: How did I ever live without these?! Summary: 5 Stars
I have been using these ear plugs for the past few years, and I don't know how I got through a decade of marriage without them! My husband was quite the snorer... And I am a VERY light sleeper. The slightest little things wake me up. And I would be up alllllll night, nudging him back onto his side. His life improved, too, since he was allowed to sleep comfortably on his back without me pushing at him all night.
I can now sleep through all of those little things that used to wake me, AND the snoring! I recommend combining the earplugs with the use of a fan. I keep my floor fan on, facing away, and I am in my own little blissful quiet zone. Make sure that you follow the directions for using the earplugs or they may not work properly.
Advice for those who complained about the size: These generally come in three sizes. The higher the noise reduction rating, the larger the ear plug is, and more noise gets blocked out:
Smallest, with lowest noise reduction (But still pretty darn good!) : NRR30 Howard Leight Maxlite Uncorded Earplugs hearing protection 200 pair
Medium in size and NRR, and these are my favorites : NRR32 Howard Leight LL1 Laser Lite Uncorded Earplugs hearing protection 200 pair
For larger ear canals, and with the highest NRR of this brand/style : NRR33 Howard Leight Max-1 Uncorded Earplugs 200 pair
Customer Review: Earplugs Summary: 5 Stars
I have used these earplugs before so knew of their qualities, but having tried these out on the noisiest night of the year (New Years Eve) I have to say these exceeded my expectations. My wife (who dislikes using earplugs) was kept awake by errant fireworks and rowdy neighbours returning from parties all night, whilst I slept like a baby unaware of any cacophony outside.
The trick is to place these in your ear just right and a bit of time putting these in will ensure a restful nights sleep. They have a soft expandable foam built around a firmer core which make these easy to roll small and insert into your ear deep enough. They then expand out and fill your ear blocking any sound, they also have a flared end which helps with insertion and also blocking sound.
Compared to other earplugs I have tried these last reasonably well and block sound well for about a weeks use, but after that the inner core breaks down and whilst the sound reduction still exists, it is a lot less. They are also more comfortable than other plugs and don't seem to hurt my ears when I insert them deep enough to be effective like others do. These come individually wrapped so it is easy to chuck a few in a bag or suitcase when going on holiday and these are invaluable on an airplane with its high decibel level that help fatigue the body.
All in all these are an inexpensive, comfortable and effective solution to a variety of situations where excessive noise is a problem. If you have tried other plugs and haven't been impressed give these are try as they may just do the trick.

Customer Review: By far the best ear plugs on the market Summary: 5 Stars
I am in college and am very picky when it comes to study habits, especially relating to noise. In the past, I would get distracted by any noise, whether be it a firetruck or just a conversation in the other room. I decided to try using ear plugs when I study to avoid this problem. I used some that I got from Walmart (Quiet Time Comfort Foam Ear Plugs - 50 Pair - NRR33), and after a while I knew there had to be a better option out there. When looking for the right product, I happened to stumble upon these, and immediately noticed the customer reviews ranting about how they are so amazing, comfortable, etc. I bought these to see if this was true, and WOW was I shocked; I had found the best option out there.
These ear plugs are amazing, bottom line. They block out so much noise that I sometimes have to take them out just to make sure I can still hear and haven't gone deaf. I also use the BOSE Quiet Comfort 15 noise-canceling headphones to study (Bose® QuietComfort® 15 Acoustic Noise Canceling® Headphones), and I can honestly say there is not much of a difference in how well they block out noise. I cannot attest to how these ear plugs perform in other situations (construction, firearms, etc.), but I would imagine they are great. I highly recommend these to anyone looking for an extremely comfortable and high performing ear plug. If you are like me and need absolute silence when studying, this is your solution.
Customer Review: Very effective Summary: 4 Stars
A couple of months ago I moved to an apartment about thirty yards from a railroad intersection--this in a town that requires that all trains blow their whistles as they approach and pass through intersections (I didn't realize this at the time). The decibel level is astonishing (comparable, I think, to hearing a car horn going off in my living room) and I honestly thought I was going to lose my mind after a week of getting almost no sleep. During that week I tried a range of earplugs--foam, wax, plastic (designed for use at shooting ranges)and so--and none were particularly effective.
I purchased the Leight earplugs after considerable searching online and have found them to be the most effective available. They work like foam earplugs--roll the cylinder between one's fingers and then insert them in the ear canal where they expand--but are of a denser material. They do an excellent job of blocking out ambient noise--downstairs neighbors, traffic from the street aside--and have signficantly reduced the noise of the train whistles. They don't block out the sound completely (I don't believe any product can do this) but they reduce it to, say, the decibel level of a car horn outside my apartment building. This is still a source of annoyance but nothing like the mind-boggling and maddening loudness that I experienced previously.
As other reviews have noted, the earplugs can be a bit uncomfortable as they expand--at least I had this experience initially but the discomofort has gone away. In conclusion, these earplugs have saved my sanity, no kidding, and for them I am grateful.
