Customer Review: Best earplugs on the market
Summary: 5 Stars

College dorms are not known as quiet places, and sometimes when you want to get some studying done there's a lot of distracting commotion outside. In my case, I also have a roommate who snores quite loudly. After trying some other brands of earplugs, these are definitely the most effective in terms of blocking out noise, and have the highest NR rating of any earplug, disposable or reusable.

Getting a proper seal can be a bit tricky. My process is as follows:

1. Lubricate your ear somehow, some people simply use spit, but I use lotion. Just put a tiny on your finger and rub it around the inside of your ear.
2. Roll each plug between index finger and thumb, they should compress nicely.
3. Grasp each plug by the flange and insert it pretty far into your ear. If you poke something that hurts, then pull it out a bit.
4. Continue holding the plugs in your ear until they fully expand. At this point again, if you feel any discomfort, pull it out a little.

You'll find that some noises are louder (chewing gum, breathing, footsteps) and that some noises penetrate anyway (such as low vibrations that transmit through bone conduction) but all in all they are excellent. Even though they are "disposable" they can be used more than once; as long as you don't have lots of earwax, you can probably use these 2-3 times or more without great detriment.

Pros:
-They work really, really well
-Cheap bulk pack

Cons:
-None!

Customer Review: Barking Dogs Now Barely Audible!
Summary: 5 Stars

I live next door to people who keep two German Shepherd dogs in their backyard. The fact that these dogs bark loudly has resulted in many sleepless nights and much frustration for me. I realized that I needed a VERY effective pair of ear plugs. I tried several types of foam plugs and even purchased some of the expensive beeswax type, but found that none of them would mute the barking enough to allow me to sleep peacefully. I then purchased the Howard Leight Max-1 disposable ear plugs and couldn't believe what I WASN'T hearing. These little plugs really do the trick! When coupled with the electronic air filtration unit that provides ambient white noise in my bedroom, the faint sound of the barking dogs no longer keeps me awake! The only drawback to these plugs that I have experienced in the short time that I have owned them is that they cause minor discomfort in my ear canals after wearing them for several hours. Hopefully, this will subside after wearing them for several weeks. The plugs insert easily into the ear and form a perfect seal, however. These plugs are a bright pinkish-orange color which the manufacturer describes as coral. If you really need to BLOCK OUT sound, don't waste your money on other expensive types of ear plugs . . . try this amazing product. You won't be disappointed!

Customer Review: Super Effective and Very Comfortable
Summary: 5 Stars

I've tried several kinds of earplugs and these have been the most effective & comfortable for me. Outstanding noise attenuation under all circumstances: Yard work, noisy power tools, shooting, etc. but I'd never wear them on the motorcycle (the helmet blocks enough noise) or anything like that--I like to hear what's going on around me. Also a great sleep aid or to simply keep out unwanted/distracting sounds.

They're kind of big but are comfortable for me. I agree with the idea of finding them in a small package to try the fit before buying them in bulk; the only problem with that is I've never seen the smaller sizes in small packs. They're so soft they can be squished pretty small before inserting them; the smaller you roll them, the easier they are to insert. For a really good seal, after it's inserted in the ear it helps to keep your fingertip on the end of the plug a few seconds while it expands. Care needs to be taken removing them because of the good seal; I gently twist the plug when removing it. I have reused a single pair even tho they're disposable; they're washable. I was amazed at how effective and comfortable these were after I first found them in the small package at the local whalemart, so it was nice to find them in bulk here at Amazon.

Customer Review: Practical earplugs
Summary: 5 Stars

I have used this type of earplug for several years for industrial safety and for quiet sleep at night. I have tried every type of earplug available and settled on this type as the best.
Most of the high attentuation ear plugs on the market are made of wax or a material something like memory foam. The cells of the foam plugs are impregnated with a material that enables the foam to expand slowly after compression. You compress the ear plugs and they hold the compressed shape long enough to insert them in your ears - then they expand to fill your ear canal, blocking off paths into your ear from the outside world. Without the slow decompression feature, it's nearly impossible to insert foam into your ears. The higher density of the plug material also improves the foam's attenuation.
If you use ear plugs all the time, as I do, you learn there are ways to reuse them - making them more economical. These ear plugs can be reused more ofter than most because they have a thin skin on their surface that slows the loss of the compressive memory of the ear plug foam. The skin also also makes it easier to clean these ear plugs. In summary; they last longer and attentuate sound as well as any other ear plugs I have found.

Customer Review: A favorable plug for my favorite plugs
Summary: 5 Stars

I usually purchase Howard Leight earplugs at a local CVS store, but they had disappeared from the chain (though they've since returned), and all other local drugstore chains.

I've tried many different brands of earplugs over the years, and found none either as effective at blocking noise, or as physically comfortable, as Howard Leight, and I wasn't about to waste my money on an inferior brand.

The only problem buyng online is that the best deals are on boxes of 200 pairs, which is far more than I expect to need. Still, at about $16.00 for those 200 pr. (excluding shipping; I tpyically spent $2.99 for only FIVE pairs at CVS), the per-pair cost is a tiny fraction of what I spent before and, because each pair in the 200-count box is individually sealed, they should last nearly forever.

No earplug is perfect; few noises are eliminated entirely, but most are reduced significantly. If you have noise problems (traffic, loud neighbors, air-traffic, rock concerts etc.), you can't get a more effective earplug than Howard Leight.
