I make jewelry boxes, bandsaw boxes, and quite a few hope chest's. My shop is in the basement of our 80 year old home and fumes from finish's migrate easily to the living spaces. About 3 years ago I discovered Howard Products, and one of my favorites is Feed n Wax. This is pretty much the only finish I use on my boxes now. After finish sanding or scraping to the finish surface I want, I apply the wax. No stains or oils, just the wax. I normally apply a good coat with a brush and let it soak in, after twenty minutes or so I reapply the wax to any dry areas. I repeat this process untill the wood has soaked up as much as it will and then wipe off the excess, then buff. It leaves a beautiful satin, soft finish, very pleasing to the touch and really brings out the grain of the wood. It is very good at repelling fingerprints and water stains and does not attract dust. It has a very pleasant orange oil smell, not real strong, but you know it's there. Howard also makes a hard paste wax that is excellent for table tops and lids on hope chests. It's a little harder finish and tougher for those "high traffic"areas. It also buff's out beautifully.
I highly recommend these products to anyone who doesn't want to change the color of the wood or hide the grain, yet still protect their wood creations.
