Tools and Hardware Reviews of Hunter Fan 28121 60-Inch Tribeca Ceiling Fan, Brushed NickelCustomer Review: Great Transitional Design at a Wallet Friendly Price Summary: 4 Stars
Purchased this and a light kit (from another retailer) to replace a 10 year old builder's grade ceiling wart.
Of course, aesthetically, the fan is excellent. It's a great "transitional" design that's not quite modern and definitely not traditional. It's a very nice, clean design that would fit well with most decor. The blades are reversible to be either a charcoal black/gray or the light beech/pine color depicted here (don't be confused by the image on the box as it shows it as black). You can see a picture of it in a nice model home at the Donald A. Gardner website photo gallery (find the "Laurelwood" House Plan Master Bedroom).
Functionally, the fan is excellent. In operation, the fan is smooth, wobble-free, quiet, and POWERFUL. Compared to the previous fan that we had, we can definitely feel a big difference in terms of the airflow (at an equivalent fan speed). Here's hoping that it helps cut down summer cooling bills.
That said, it's not perfect. I docked it one star for the following:
- Instructions are seriously lacking. I wonder if the engineers actually performed usability testing on the directions since I really don't think they did. The pictures were not detailed enough and the instructions didn't specify which screws to use. In the age of Ikea, I can't imagine how so many manufacturers continue to get basic instruction design wrong.
- Had to run out to Home Depot to pick up another wood screw after the included screws stripped clean, even after pre-drilling the pilot hole as instructed. For once, I'd like a manufacturer to include a screw that doesn't feel like it's made of butter.
- The mounting plate design isn't optimal. The instructions want you to screw the mounting plate into the wood support structure. Just be aware of this if you are doing a remodel install using a braced metal ceiling box that it may be much harder if there isn't an existing fan there. You may end up cutting out a larger portion of your drywall!
- Light kit is remote operated *ONLY*. This would suck if you lost the remote. Also, the remote takes a funky battery for no other reason than taking a funky battery. Why not just use a standard AAA? Who knows.
As a side note, if you currently have a fan which has a separate switch for the light and the fan (as we did), you'll have a three-way wire coming into the existing fan. We ended up capping and taping the red wire and only connected the black wire.
At the end of the day? Still worth the price and effort. Looks great with our decor, moves a nice amount of air, and _relatively_ easy to install (compared to fans I've installed in the past).
